My invention relates to sheltered deck windows for ship constructions andv in particular to a unitary window having a shutter operable fory closing the window opening.
Y In certain ships, it is desirable to have shut# ters in addition to the window-panes for closing the window opening and enclosing the windowpane. The commony practice in constructing ships is to install the windows in a series, the 10 operating mechanism of the series of windows being enclosed. with framework common to all of the windows.
Such constructions are expensive to install and have the objectionable feature that pockets are 15 formed beneath the Windows and enclose kthe operating mechanism thereof, which pockets are inaccessible and cannot therefore be reached for painting or other treating` to insure protection from the elements. Consequently, the surfaces n 2O of these inaccessible pockets are subject to relatively rapid deterioration since water entering between the window-pane and thev frame is caught in these pockets and the elimination of such inaccessible pockets is, therefore, desirable.
. Also, complicated operating mechanism is neces- Y40 that every portion of the window is accessible for painting and repair.
Specifically, I provide a construction which comprises a single frame member. Theframe member is provided with an outwardly extending flange which may be secured to the side of the ship by bolts. or other suitable securing Vmeans. Secured to the inner surface ofthe sides and upper cross piece of the frame membei', there are two parallelguideways, a windowpane guideway and a guard plate guideway.
The guard plate guideway isl substantially in line vwith the outwardly extending flange on the frame member, the window-pane guideways being spaced inwardly from the guard plate guide- Ways. A cross piece at substantially the center of the frame member supports a thrust bearing in which the upper end of a vertical screw shaft is journaled, the lower end being journaled in a bearing supported by the lower cross member of the frame. On the screw shaft there is a nut which is moved longitudinally of the screw shaft when the screw shaft is rotated. The nutengages a member secured to the lower edge of the window-pane and raises or lowers the Windowpane in the guideway upon rotation of the screw shaft. The screw shaft may be rotated by a handle secured on a shaft extending through the aforementioned central cross member, the shaft upon which the handle is journaled being mechanically connected to the screw` shaft to transmit rotational movement thereto. This windowpane traversing means is common to the guard plate, means being provided however to disconnect the guard plate from the traversing vmeans so that the window-pane may be raised or lowered independently of the guard plate. A shield, supported by the central cross member which supports the aforementioned thrust bearing, in
' conjunction with the frame member, encases the window-pane traversing mechanism. Thus,.the Window may be assembled and secured to the sider of the ship as a unit.

The window shown in the drawing comprises a frame 1"constructed from angle members of L-shape in-cross section, one of the flanges 2 of the L-section members extending outwardly with respect to the frame. AThis outwardly eX- tending flange 2 is adapted to be secured to the 100 side of the ship in which the window is placed, any suitable securing means, such as bolts, being used for the purpose. To the inner surface of the side and upper cross member of the frame, there is secured two guideways, a window-pane guideway 3 and a guard plate guideway 4..
The guard plate guideway 4 is U-shape in cross section and is secured to the frame member so that the outer surface'of one leg of the U is in alignment with the cuter surface of the outwardly extending iiange 2 of the frame member. The window-pane guideway 3 is spaced inwardly fromA the guard plate guideway and the guideways are maintained in spaced relation by a spacing member 5.
The window-pane guideway is also U-shaped in cross section but has a ange 6 lying in a plane of the web of the U and forming an eX-1 tension thereof. The flange 6 oi the windowpane guideway is secured to the frame 1 means of bolts 7. This guideway is constructed from a single sheet oi metal, tho flange 6 being formed thereon by bending the metal upon itself. The guideway is lined with some suitable material,- such as felt. In t .e window-pane guideway, there is slidably mounted a frameless glass window-pane 8 and in the guard plate guideway there is slidably mounted a steel guard plate 9.
The window-pane is raised and lowered in the window-pane guideway by window-pane traversing means. The window-pane traversi; comprise a vertical screw shaft 10. The upper endV of the screw shaft is journaled a thrust bearing-11 which is supported by a cross mei ber 12 which extends between the sides of the frame member substantially at the center oi the frame. The upper end of the screw shaft is maintained in the thrust bearing by a nut 13 threaded on the end of the screw shaft. At the lower end, the screw shaft is journaled in a bearing 14 which is supported by the lower cross member of the frame 1.V On the screw shaft, there is a nut 15 having internal ythreads corresponding to the threads of the screw shaft. The nut 15 is provided with an integral collar 16 at its lower end and with an integral radial proI jection 17 intermediate its ends. The collar 16 on the nut is engaged by integral projections 18 formed on a member 19 and the integral pro jectionv 17 on the nut engages an opening 2G in the member 19 so that movement or" the nut longitudinally of the shaft moves the member 19 therewith. The member 19 is secured to a clamp member 21 in which the lower edge .of the dow-.pane' is secured, a packing strip 22 being interposed between the. metal of the clamp,` memn ber and the window-pane. Thus, rotation of. the screw shaft moves the nut longitudinally thereof and raises or lowers the window-pane depending upon the direction of rotation of the screw shai't. On'the lower edge of a frame member 23S/urrounding the guard plate there are two projece tions 24 to which members 25 are hinged. .These members 25 are spaced apart such that .when moved into position parallel to each other they straddle the projections 18 on t emember 19 secured to the clamp member 21 of `the windowpane 8. In this position, the members 25` are also engaged by the collar 16 on the nut so that the guard plate is raised and loweredwith the window-pane. If it is desired to raise and lower `the window-pane independently of the vguard plate, the hinged members are about the hinge connection `to a position in which they are not engaged by the nut 15. The screw shaft l0 may be rotated by a handle 26 which is secured to the end of a short 27.- On the opposite end of the short shaft there is a gear 23 which meshes with a gear 29 on the screw shaft. Thus, rotational movement of the handle 26 is transmitted to the screw shaftr to raise or lower the window-pane in the guideways.

The plate is pivoted so that its normal position is that in which it covers the opening between the window-pane guideway and the outer edge or the frame as shown in Figure 3.
The window-pane traversing means is enclosed by a shield. The shield consists of two parts, an Lipper part 32 which is bent over the top of the window-pane traversingV means and a lower part 33 which extends downwardly in front of the frame member, the sides thereof being bent inwardly toward the frame member. The shield is removably supported by the cross member 12 which supports the -thrust bearing for the screw shaft and an L-shape member 33 secured to the lower end of the frame mem- At the lower portion of the shield, there is a sliding door 34 'through which access may be had to the hinged members 25. In this way, these hinged members may be manipulated to engage the nut ofthe window-pane traversing means or vice versa as desired. The guard plate 9 is, of course, used only during storms in which the window-pane is liable to be broken. The shield and the frame are so connected that water entering between the shield and the frame cannot escape onto the deck.
From the above description o the illustrated embodiment oi my invention, it will be apparent that I have produced a unitary shelter deck window which may be easily and readily installed or replaced and which when in position is completelyaccessible for repair.
It is. obvious that various changes may be made in the illustrated embodiment of my invention above particularly described by those skilled in the art within the principle and scope of my invention as expressed in the appended claims. Y
I claim:
1. A` unitary shelter deck window comprising a frame member of vL-shape in cross section encasing and supporting window-pane guideways, guard plate; guideways parallel to the window-pane guideways, a window-pane. slidably mounted in the window-pane guideways, a guard plate for the window-pane slidably mounted in the guard plate guideways, and traversing means common to the window-pane and the guard plate, and a shield secured to the frame member enclosing the traversing means and the window pane and guard plate in the open position thereof.
2. VA unitary shelter deck window comprising a frame member of L-shape in cross section encasing and supporting a window-paneand a guard plate guideway, a window-pane slidably mounted in the window-pane guideway, a guard plate for the window-pane slidably mounted in the guard plate guideway and traversing means common to the window-pane and the guard plate including means for releasing the guard plate from the traversing means, and a shield secured to the frame member enclosing the traversing means.
3. An interchangeable unitary shelter deck window comprising a frame member having an outwardly extending flange adapted to'be se cured to thek side of a ship, the frame member encasing window-pane guideways, guard plate guideways parallel to said window-pane guideways and spaced therefrom, a frameless windowpane slidably mounted in the guideways, a guard plate for the window-pane slidably mounted in the guard plate guideways, and traversing means common to the window-pane and the guard plate, and a shield secured to the frame member and enclosing the traversing means and the Window-pane and guard plate in the open position thereof.
4. An interchangeable unitary shelter deck Window comprising a frame member substantially twice the length or the Window opening having an outwardly extending flange adapted to be secured to the side of a ship, the frame member encasing channel-shaped window-pane guideways secured to the sides and top of the frame, channel-shaped guard plate guideways secured to the sides of said frame member parallel to said window-pane guide-ways and spaced therefrom, a frameless window-pane slidably mounted in the window-pane guideways, a guard plate slidably mounted in the guard plate guideways, Window pane traversing means adapted to engage the lower edge of the window-pane including a vertical shaft, a bearing for the lowerl end of said shaft secured to the frame member, a cross member at substantially the transverse center of the frame member having an openingY therein for the upper end of said shaft, and means for traversing said guard plate With said window-pane, and a shield extending from said cross member to the lower end of said frame member and enclosing the Window-pane traversing means.
5. In a Window construction for a ship or other structure, a Window pane slidable therein, a shutter spaced from said Window pane, and means for raising said pane and shutter as a unit whereby to provide a double closure.
6. In a window construction for a ship or other structure, a frame therefor dening an opening, a transparent closure for the opening slidable in said frame, and an auxiliary closure for said opening for preventing damage to said transparent closure, said closures being constructed for operation as a unit.
7. In a Window construction for a ship or other structure, a frame therefor dening an opening, a pair of closures for the window opening slidable in said frame, and means for raising one or both of said closures as a unit.
8. In a window construction for a ship or other structure, spaced guide rails attached to said frame, a pane of glass slidable in one oi' said rails, a shutter slidable in the other of said rails, operating mechanism for lowering and raising said pane, and a bracket member attached to said shutter and provided With foldable arms adapted to seat on said operating mechanism for permitting raising of said shutter with said pane When the operating mechanism is being actuated.
