(01. 221-95) One of the objects of my invention is to provide a dispensing mechanism for gasoline and other liquids providing a simple type of construction for supporting the hose nozzle when not in use in such a way that the pump-operating means will necessarily be in inoperative'position, the nozzle will be securely locked stationarily with respect to the housing, and it will not be possible to operate the valve-operating member 10 for the valve of the nozzle. Y
Yet another object of my invention resides in providing a manually shiftable nozzle-supporting -member and combined pump control for a gasoline or other liquid dispensing apparatus which support permanently projects outside of the housing and is constructed and arranged so that when manually shifted to a position such that the pump is in inoperative condition, the support can receive the nozzle for the hose, but
0 when the support is shifted to a position in which the pump is in operation, the hose nozzle cannot be supported on the support, thus requiring first the manual shifting of the support to a pumpinoperative position before the pump can be placed or supported thereon.
Yet another object of my invention resides in providing a liquid dispensing apparatus with a plurality of delivery hoses all served from a single power operated pumping means including instrumentalities whereby pumping means will be automatically stopped only'when all .of the hose nozzles are supported in inactive position.
' Yet another object of my invention resides in providing a liquid dispensing apparatus with a plurality of delivery hoses all served from a single power operated pumping means and wherein each hose is provided with its individual support for the .hose when not in use, and
' their respective pump-ofi position.
An auxiliary feature of my invention resides in the fact of a further construction as set forth in the preceding paragraph wherein the.
hose nozzles can be supported on the hose supports only when the pump controls are shifted to pump-inoperative position.
Yet another objectof my invention resides in the provision of a liquid dispensing device having a specific type of interlocking mechanism operation of the pump, and in which position'the 0 manually operable means for controlling the nozzle valve are inaccessible from the outside of the housing.
Other objects of the invention will appear hereinafter, the novelfeatures and combinations v being set forth in the appended claims.

In its broad aspects, my invention consists in providing agasoline or other liquid dispensing apparatus which has a pump for forcing no the liquid through the usual meter in the housing, and thence through a flexible hose disposed outside of the housing, and which ter-' is inoperative, and

In its narrower aspects my invention includes the provision of alternately usable hose nozzle supports for supporting the hose nozzle when not in use, the first comprising a manually shiftable hose support which is also a 'pump-controlling member, and the second, a stationary support for the hose nozzle. In conjunction with this latter support, I provide instrumentalities for effecting the three-way or triple interlock so that when the nozzle is supported for nonuse, the manually shiftable pump control will be inoperative and it will be impossible to operate the nozzle valve lever. It of course will be apparent that in lieu of using a specific type.
of manually shiftable hose support, alternatively I may use any other approved type in combination'with the alternate stationary hose support.
In addition, my invention includes the provision of a novel arrangement of manually shiftable pum-p control member and combined nozzle support which is arranged so that when the nozzle support is shifted to a position in which the pump is operative, it is impossible to support the nozzle on this nozzle support, and the support must be manually shifted to a position in which the pump is inoperative before the nozzle can be so supported.
In a more specific aspect, my invention includes detailed instrumentalities interconnected between the stationary nozzle support on the housing, a manually shiftable pump control member permanently extending outside of the housing, a pump switch, and, in addition, if desired, a delivery valve for controlling the flow of liquid through the dispensing line in addition to the usual valvecontrolled nozzle, whereby various dispensing operations and locking operations of the apparatus, when not in use, are secured.
In addition, my invention also includes the provision of a dispensing apparatus having a -plurality.'of dispensing nozzles and. a common pumping means, and a plurality of manually shiftable pump controls, and a plurality of nozzle supports, the arrangement being such that the pump cannot be thrown to inoperative or 05 position until all of the manually shiftable members have been thrown to inoperative positions, and alternatively, if desired, in which position the respective nozzles can be placed in nozzle-supporting position, and also accomplishingan interlock to prevent the operation either of the pump controls, the removal of the nozzles, or the operation of the valves of the nozzles.
Referring to Fig. 1 of the drawings, 11 designates the storage tank which is adapted to be buried in the ground and be filled with gasoline through the fill pipe 12. By means of a rotary pump 13 operated by an electric motor 14 the gasoline in the tank 11 may be drawn through the suction pipe 15, through the line valve 16 into the gasoline pipe 17. The line valve 16 is a check-valve which opens toward the pipe 17, but prevents flow from' the pipe 17 back into the suction pipe-15.
meters 31 and 32 through the vertical pipes 33 and 34 to the sight- glasses 35 and 36 of the flexible discharge hoses 37 and 38, each of which is provided with a nozzle at its free end, and one of such nozzles is shown at 39 inserted into the housing 40 and locked therein by the padlock 41.
The dispensing units 23 and 24 are respectively provided with pointer and dial indicating mechanisms 42 and 43 operated by the meters 31 and 32 with provision for re-setting the pointers to zero after each dispensing operation by means of the re-setting knobs 44 and 45. The faces of the dials and the pointers are spaced from glass windows and illuminated by means of an incandescent lamp which'is electrically connected to a source of supply by wires in the conduits 46 and 47. Fig. 6 shows diagrammatically the supply mains at 48 and the incandescent lamps at 49 and 50 with a twopole switch at 51 for lighting the incandescent lamps for illuminating the pointers and dials independently 01' whether the dispensing units are operating or not.
Each dispensing apparatus is provided with manually shiftable means for controlling the pump 13, and while in the broad aspect of my invention, any type of manually shiftable means may be availed of, in the present instance I have shown each dispensing apparatus with a manually shiftable pump controlled member permanently extending outside of the/housing and shiftable in a vertical plane from a horizontal position which represents pump-inoperative position, to a substantially vertical position (as shown in Fig 3), which represents a situation I in which the pump is in operation. In the presporting the hozzle, and it is therefore necessary to manually shift the support 52 back to substantially horizontal position before the nozzle can be supported thereon.
When either operating lever 52 or 53 is swung upwardly the valve 29 or 30 will be opened and the electric switch 54 or 55 will be closed. Theelectric switches 54 and 55 are diagrammatically illustrated in Fig. 8. By means of the threepole switch 56 the supply mains 5'7 may be connected to the motor terminals 58 and to the switches 54 and 55. The electric motor 14 may be started immediately upon the closure of either of the electric switches 54 or 55 by the upward movement of the lever 52 or the lever 53.
It will be noted by referring to the wiring diagram of Fig. 6, and by referring to Figs. v1,
2 and 3, that the pump will be started by raising of either of themanually shiftable pump controls 52 or 53, and that if both said controls 52 and 53 are raised, that the pump 13 cannot be stopped, underone aspect of the invention, untill all of the nozzles are replaced on their supports 112. In order to place the nozzles on the supports, it is necessary to shift each control 15 member 52 to non-pump operating position, shown for instance in Fig. 2, which will permit the toe 106 hereinafter described, to bereleased so that the nozzles can then be inserted in the openings 111 hereinafter described, and placed on their supports 112. In other words, as long .as the control members 52 are in raised position shown in Fig. 3, the plates 110 hereinafter described, prevent the nozzles being placed on the supports, and it is only when all of the nozzles have been placed on their respective supports 112 that the pump is in stopped position.
- Each of the dispensing units includes a wet hose in that the nozzle is provided with a valve which is .closed when no dispensing operation is taking place and therefore the hose always remains filled with gasoline. It should be understood, however, that my invention is also applicable to dry hose dispensing units. As shown in Fig. 2, the nozzle 39 is provided with a valve at 59 which is controlled by thelever -60.pivoted at 61 on the handle 62 for carrying the nozzle and the free end of the hose. the operator grasps the handle 62 he may reach with his fingers under the lever 60 and move the latter toward the handle 62 to swing the short arm 63 against the pin 64, thus depressing the latter and opening the valve 59.
In the wet hose system, the upward movement of the lever 52 or the lever 53 and the consequent closure of the electric switch to which such lever is connected will start the electric motor 14 and therefore also the pump 13 and the latter will immediately pump gasoline from the tank 11 to produce liquid pressure in the gasoline line comprising the pipes 18, 19, 20, 2 1, 22,.and the connections to the latter. If at this time the valves at the nozzles are still closed and it is not desired to start the pump or to overheat the motor or injure the latter, the pump should be relieved by means of a by-pass and I have therefore provided a pipe 65 as shown in Fig. 1 with a relief valve 66 which opens from the pipe 18 toward the pipe 65 to permit flow as indicated by the arrow 67.
' The relief valve 66 may be set to operate at a predetermined pressure, for example, fifteen pounds per square inch, so that when the pressure exceeds this amount the gasoline will be pumped through the by-pass and when the pressure does not exceed this amount it will be suflicient to eflfect dispensing of the gasoline when the valves at the nozzles are open. I
An air release may be provided at 68 for 70 eliminating from the gasoline in the pipe 18 any entrapped air so that it will not be passed down through the pipe 19 and through the meters 31 and 32. Such air release may be of the type shown in the co-pending application of Clement s P. Griflith, Serial No. 302,195, filed August 27,

It is desired to prevent air from passing through the meters as they are intended to operate only when gasoline passes through them. For the purpose of rendering the air release 68 effective it may be provided with valve mechanism which will permit upward flow of the air, but prevent the downward flow of air from the vent pipe 69 nected by the pipe 70. If any gasoline should pass upwardly through the check-valve in the air release 68 it will flow down through the pipe 69 back into the top of the storage tank 11. The pipe 69 serves as a vent pipe for the stor- 'age tank 11 so that as gasoline is withdrawn from the latter, air will enter at the top of the tank through the vent pipe 69. Also, when the tank 11 is filled with gasoline through the fill pipe 12, the air in the upper portion of the tank may flow out through the vent pipe 69.
As shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the lever or pumpcontrolled member 52 is shown pivoted at 72 on a bracket plate 73 secured to the housing 74. The' lower end of the pushrod 77 is connected to a push-plate 81 which is adapted to slide over the vertical rod 82 and 110 engage the collar 83 to push the vertical rod 84 downwardly to close the electric switch 54. Fig. 2 shows in dotted lines the open position of the switch, and Fig. 3 shows the closed position thereof. When the lever 52 is pushed upwardr 5 1y to .the position shown in Fig. 3, the electric switch 54 is closed and when the lever 52 is moved down so as to rest against the stop 85 on the bracket plate '73, the switch will be released and the spring 86 will automatically open 0 the switch.
By referring to Figs. 4 and 5, it will be seen that to the lower end of the link '79 is also pivoted a link 8'7 which has a slot 88 in its lower end, as shown in Fig, 2, thereby assuring the 5 proper sequence in the operation of the switch 54' and the valve 29. It will be seen that the push rod 77 may be moved downwardly a predetermined distance before the electric switch' is closed. Therefore simultaneously with the 1 closure of the electric switch 54 the valve 97 will be opened by means of the link 87 moving downwardly the valve operating lever 89. When the valve 29 is opened the gasoline may flow from the strainer 27 throughthe pipe 90 into the valve rod 95 extends into a vertical recess 96 at the 14s center of the valve 9'7. The spring 98 holds the valve 97 against its seat when the push-rod 95 is in its upper position. When the operating lever '89 is swung downwardly, as viewed in Fig. 8, the
crank 93 operates to push the rod 95 down and open the valve 97 against the action of the spring 98, thus opening the inlet port 99 through the valve to the outlet port 100.
The valve stem 92 is provided with a packing 101 with a gland 102 pressed against the pack in the bracket plate 75. As shown in Fig. 4, a
plate 110 is securedat its upper endl to the rock shaft 107.
The plate 110 is mounted immediately back of an openinglll in the housing 74. The lower portion of this opening is circular and the upper portionelongated. A scuff plate 112 is secured to the housing to provide protection for the housing 74 at the lower edge of the opening and a suitable support for the weight of the nozzle 39 and the hose 37. The upper elongated portion of' the opening 111 permits passage of the handle 62 shown in Fig. 2 and the lower circular portion of such opening permits free passage of the nozzle 39, valve 59, and the coupling connections between the hose 37 and the nozzle. It must be obvious that this stationary support for the nozzle, when not in use, (112), may be used as the only nozzle support, if desired, in which event the pump controlled member 114 may be constructed in any desired manner so that it is incapable of supporting the hose, but does function solely as a pump control.
By reason of the plate 110 being immediately back of the opening 111, this plate will be struck by the hose nozzle when inserted into said opening so as to swing the plate 110 to the position shown in full lines in Fig. 2., When the operating lever 52 is in the position shown in Fig. 2, the valve 29 is closed and the switch 54 is open. The roller abutment 105 is then sufficiently elevated to permit the quadrant stop 106 to be swung under such abutment, as shown in Figs.
2 and 5 When, however, the lever 52 is in the position shown in Fig. 3, the valve 29 is open and theelectric switch 54 is closed and then the roller abutment 105 is in such; a low position that the quadrant stop 106 will engage the abutment and prevent the plate 110 from being swung back away from the opening 111. It will thus be seen that the desired interlocking'connections can be effected only when the operating lever 52 is moved down to its horizontal position as shown in Fig. 2. When the valve 29 is closed the switch 54 is open.
'During the day while dispensing operations are being frequently performed for supplying automobile tanks with gasoline, the nozzles at the ends of the flexible hoses may be hung on the operating levers either by inserting the nozzle 39 through the circular holes 113 in the operating levers or by hanging thenozzles on the upper curved portion 114 by means of the hook 115 shown in Fig. 2. Obviously the circular hole .113 maybe omitted if desired. Whenever it is desired to discontinue the operation of any unit, the operating lever may be moved to its horizontal position as shown in Fig. 2 and then the nozzle may be inserted into the housing and when this is done, the plate 110 is swung back and the quadrant stop 106 is moved under the roller abutment 105. It will then be impossible for the operating lever to be moved upwardly, because the roller abutment 105 locks the link 79 against downward movement and in like manner locks the link 87 against downward movement and therefore neither the valve 29 nor the switch 54 can be operated so long as the nozzle remains in the housing. Before any dispensing operation can again be performed the nozzle must be withdrawn from the housing so that the plate 110 will drop by gravity to its position shown in Fig. 3 to withdraw the quadrant stop 106 from under the roller abutment 105, thus again freeing the mechanism for operating the valve 29 and the switch 54.
After the nozzle has been inserted through the opening 111 into the housing to occupy the position shown in Fig. 2, the nozzle may be locked in such position, and likewise the hose 37, by means of the plates 116 and 117 which are pivoted at 118 and are provided with semicircularrecesses 119 and 120 to fit around the hose 37, these recesses forming such a circular opening when the plates 116 and 117 are brought together to the positions shown in Figs. 10 and 11.
The circular opening between the plates 116 and 117 is smaller than the diameter of the coupling between the hose 37 and the nozzle, thereby holding the plate 110 swung fully back to the position shown in Fig. 2. When the looking plates 116 and 117 are together as shown in Figs. 10 and 11, the padlock 41 may be applied 110 to the perforated extensions 121 and 122 at the upper-ends of the plates 116 and 117 to lock the latter together.
When the padlock is released and the plates swung to their open position shown in Fig. 9, the semi-circular recesses 123 and 124 may en gage the stop pin 125 secured to the housing 74.
Obviously those skilled in the art may make various changes in the details and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined by the claims hereto appended and I wish therefore not to be restricted to the precise construction herein disclosed.
Having thus fully described an embodiment 125 of my invention, what I desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:-
1. Dispensing apparatus comprising a housing having an opening therein, a valve for controlling the flow of liquid through the dispensing 130 line, means for operating said valve, a discharge hose having a nozzle adapted to be inserted through said opening into said housing, and mechanism preventing the insertion of said nozzle through said opening into said'housing ex- 135 cept when said valve operating means is in a predetermined position.
2. Dispensing apparatusv comprising a housing having an opening therein, a discharge hose having a nozzle at-the free end thereof adapted to 4 prevent the operation of said lever to open said valve until said nozzle is withdrawn from said housing.
3. In dispensing apparatus, the combination with a dispensing unit having a housing and a hose with a nozzle at the tree end thereof adapted to be inserted throughan opening in said housing, of a pair of pivoted locking plates having semi-circular recesses to flt over the hose when the nozzle is thus inserted and said plates are swung together, means for limiting the swinging movements of the plates to their open positions, and means for locking together the said plates.
4. In dispensing apparatus, the combination with dispensing mechanism comprising a housing, of a valve within said housing for controlling the flow to said dispensing mechanism, a
' source of supply, means for controlling the flow from said source of supply to said valve, an operating lever pivoted to said housing and projecting into the latter, an operating lever connected to said valve, links connected to said levers and pivotally connected to each other at their lower ends, and an upright actuatingrodconnected to said controlling means at its lower end and to the lower ends to said links at its upper-ends.
5. In dispensing apparatus, the combination with dispensing mechanism, of a controlling valve therefor, liquid pressure producing mechanism connected through said valve to said dispensing mechanism to effect flow of the liquid thereto when said valve is open, means for controlling the operation of said liquid pressin'e producing mechanism, a single operating lever pivotally mounted, a lever connected to said valve, means for operating said controlling having an opening therein, controlling mechameans comprising a reciprocating rod, and a pair of links each pivotally connected to said rod and respectively pivotally connected to said levers to effect reciprocation of said rod whenv said levers are 'moved arcuately, an abutment with a pivotal. connection of said links, and a shittable stop associated with the abutment, and
means actuated by the positioning 01. a portion of the dispensing mechanism for actuating said stop.
6.- Dispensing apparatus comprising a housing having an opening therein, .a discharge hose having a nozzle adapted to be inserted through said opening into said housing, a pivoted plate within said. housing back of said opening, an operating lever, controlling mechanism for the dispensing apparatus connected to said operating lever, and a'pawl connected to said pivoted plate to act as an abutment when said pivoted plate is moved by the insertion of said nozzle into said opening to prevent said controlling mechanism from'being actuated by said operating. lever.
7. Dispensing apparatus comprising a housing having an opening therein, controlling mechamm for the dispensing apparatus, a discharge hose having a nozzle. adapted to. be inserted through said opening into said housing, and mechanismior preventing the insertion of said nozzle through said opening into said housing when said operating mechanism is out or a predetermined position.
8. Dispensing apparatus comprising a housing nism for the dispensing'apparatus, an operating lever connected to said controlling mechanism, a discharge hose having a nozzle adapted to be inserted through said opening into said housing,
and mechanism for blocking the insertion of said nozzle through said opening into said housing when said operating lever is out of a predetermined position.
- 9. Dispensing apparatus comprising a housing having an opening therein, an operating lever, mechanism connected to said operating lever for controlling the dispensing apparatus, an abutment associated with said controlling-mechanism, a discharge hose having a nozzle adapted to be inserted through said opening into said housing, a pivoted plate back of said opening within said housing, and a pawl connected to said plate .in position to engage said abutment to prevent movement of said plate away from said opening and thereby prevent the insertion of said nozzle through said opening into said housing except when said operating lever is in a'predetermined position. a

In dispensing apparatus, the combinatio with dispensing mechanism, of a controlling valve, a pump, an electric. motor for operating said pump, connections between' said pump and said dispensing mechanism, an electric switch for controlling said motor, an operating lever, com nections between said operating lever and said valve and also said switch to open the valve and close the switch when the lever is in one position to eflect operation of the pump and the flow of liquid through said connections between the pump and the dispensing mechanism and. to close said valve and to open said switch when said lever is in another position to stop the pump and cut oil the flow of said dispensing mechanism, an abutment associated with the connections between said operating lever and said valve and said switch, a housing for the dispensing mechanism having an opening therein, said dispensing mechanism comprisingv a discharge hose having a nozzle adapted to be in- 15 serted into said opening, and means associated with said abutment to prevent the insertion of said nozzle into'said opening except when said operating lever is in position to close said valve andopensaidswitcln.
11. Dispensing apparatus comprisihg a flexible discharge hose with a nozzle at the free end Jacent said opening and having semi-circular receases i'or encircling the hose when the nozzle 'is inserted into said opening, and means for locking said plates together to lock the nozzle in said opening with the discharge end thereof 1 within said housing.
12. Dispensing apparatus comprising a discharge hose with a nozzle at the free end thereof, a housing having an opening therein adapt-- ed to receive said nozzle, a pair of locking plates pivoted to said housing adjacent said opening and having semi-circular recesses for encircling said hose, an abutment for limiting the swinging of said locking plates apart, and means at the'opposite ends of said locking plates adapted M0 to receive the hasp, 01 a padlock for locking the plates together with said recesses encircling the hose and said nozzle within the housing.
13. The combination with a dispensing unit comprising a housing, oi a means within said housing for controlling the flow from said source of supply to said unit, a lever pivoted to said housing and having one arm outside oi the housing and the other arm projecting into the housing, a bracket secured to the outside of said 159 housing, a pivotal support on said, bracket for said lever, and a stop on said bracket having a downwardly inclined upper face in position to be engaged by said lever.
14. Dispensing apparatus comprising a housing having an opening therein, a discharge hose having a nozzle insertable through said opening into said housing, a flow controlling valve within said housing, an operating lever outside of said housing but connected to said valve to operate the same, a controlling device within said housing adapted to be connected to liquid pressure producing mechanism for efiecting flow to said valve and through the latter to said hose operating connections between said lever and said controlling device, an interlocking mechanism for preventing insertion of the nozzle through said opening when said valve is open and'operable by the insertion of said nozzle through said opening when said valve is closed 1 to prevent the opening of said valve.
15. Liquid dispensing apparatus comprising a pumping means, a discharge hose having a nozzle at the free end thereof, said nozzle being adapted to be inserted through said opening into said housing, and means associated with said opening in position to be engaged by the nozzle when inserted into said opening to prevent the operation of the pumping means.
16. Dispensing apparatus comprising a housing having an opening therein and a liquid flow line including a meter discharging through a discharge hose having a nozzle adapted to be inserted through said opening into said housing, and mechanism associated with said opening in position to be engaged by said nozzle when inserted into said opening to prevent the passage of liquid to said meter.
17. Dispensing apparatus comprising a housing having an opening therein adapted to receive a discharge nozzle and means within said housing in position back of said opening to be engaged by the nozzle to prevent the passage of liquid through said nozzle.
18. Liquid dispensing apparatus comprising pumping means, a delivery conduit connected therewith and including a flexible hose terminating with a valved nozzle having a member for operating the same, a casing enclosing said means and part of said conduit leaving the hose and nozzle outside said casing, said casing having an opening in which the nozzle may be sufliciently inserted when not in use to prevent access to said member, said casing serving to support said nozzle when inserted in said opening, and means movable, on starting said pumping means, into position to obstruct the insertion 01 said nozzle into said opening.
19. Liquid dispensing apparatus, comprising power-operated pumping means, a delivery conduit connected therewith and'including a flexible hose terminating in a valved nozzle having valve operating meansfor operating the same, a normally closed casing housing, a part of said conduit leaving the hose and nozzle outside said casing, said casing having an opening in which the nozzle may be sufllciently inserted when not v in use to prevent access to said valve operating means, said casing serving to support said nozzle when inserted in said opening, and a member movable into and out of a position in which it' member for controlling the operation of said pumping means. p
20-. A liquid dispensing apparatus comprising a housing, pumping means, a delivery conduit connected with said pumping means and including a flexible hose terminating in a valved nozzle having an operating means, shiftable control means for said pump extending outside said housing and having connections whereby when said means is shifted in one position the pump is ineffective to supply liquid to said nozzle, and nozzle supporting means including mechanism operable when the nozzle is positioned in place to prevent the operation of the pumping means to supply liquid to said nozzle and to prevent the operation of said nozzle valve operating means. 1
21. Liquid dispensing apparatus comprising a housing, liquid pumping means, a delivery conduit connected therewith and including a flexible hose terminating with a valve nozzle having a member for operating the same, means for controlling said pumping means comprising a member permanently disposed outside of and shiftable with respect to the housing to start and stop said liquid pumping means, mechanism associated with said shiftable member and with said housing including devices for locking said nozzle stationarily with respect to said housing, and including means for preventing the operation of said nozzle member when so locked.
22. Liquid dispensing apparatus comprising a housing, liquid pumping means, a delivery conduit connected therewith and including a flexible hose terminating with a valve nozzle having an actuator for operating the same, means for controlling said pumping means comprising a member disposed without and shiftable with respect to the housing to start and stop said liquid pumping means, mechanism associated with said shiftable member and with said housing including devices for locking said nozzle stationarily with respect to said housing, and including means for preventing the operation of said nozzle valve actuator when so locked, said mechanism also including means for preventing the operation of said shiftable member when said nozzle is so locked.
23. Liquid dispensing apparatus comprising a housing. liquid pumping means therein, a delivery conduit connected with said pumping means including a flexible hose terminating with a valve nozzle having a member for operating the same. said housing having a laterally extending shiftable member and a nozzle receptacle spaced a predetermined distance from said laterally extending shiftable member whereby to permit the nozzle to be supported in predetermined stationary position relative to said member with the end of the nozzle inserted in said receptacle, and means operable upon such positioning of the nozzle for preventing the actuation of said nozzle member.
24. Liquid dispensing apparatus comprising a housing, liquid pumping means, a delivery conduit connected with said pumping means including a flexible hose terminating with a valve nozzle having an actuator for operating the same, said housing having a laterally extending shittable member and a nozzle receptacle spaced a predetermined distance from said member whereby to permit the nozzle to be supported in predetermined stationary position relative to said member and nozzle receptacle with the end of the nozzle inserted in said receptacle,
and means operable upon such positioning of the nozzle for preventingthe actuation of said nozzle valve actuator and for preventing the actuation of said member.
25. Liquid dispensing apparatus comprising a housing, liquid pumping means, a delivery conduit connected with said pumping means including a flexiblehose terminating with a valve nozzle having a lever for operating the same, said housing having a laterally extending shiftable member and having a nozzle receptacle spaced a predetermined distance from said member whereby to permit the nozzle to be supported in predetermined stationary position relative to said member and noz'zle receptacle with the end of the nozzle inserted insaid receptacle, and means operable upon such positioning of the nozzle for preventing the actuation of said nozzle lever, and for preventing the actuation of said member, said means including devices adapted to receive a padlock for temporary locking.
26. Liquid dispensing apparatus comprising a housing, liquid pumping means, a delivery conduit connected with said pumping means including a flexible hose terminating with a valve nozzle having an operating member for operating the same, a lever mounted with respect to said housing and extending outwardly therefrom and shiftable from a normally horizontal position to 'a substantially vertical position, there being operative connection from said lever to said liquid pumping means, and interlocking means associated with said lever and with said housing including devices adapted to receive a padlock or the like therethrough, said devices including means for temporarily locking the nozzle in fixed position relatively to said housing, and the pump lever with' respect to the housing, said devices also preventing the operation of the nozzle operating member.
27. In a liquid dispensing apparatus, the combination of a housing, a pump adapted to be connected with a source of liquid to be dispensed, a dispensing conduit within said housing con nected to the pump and terminated outside of the housing in a flexible hose, a,valve-controlled nozzle for said hose, said valve having an actuatable control member, a switch in said housing for controlling the pump, 'a switch-operating 'housing permanently extending outside of said member for manual operation, said housing having a nozzle support arranged to receive the" bination with a housing, a pump having a motor,"
said pump being connected to a source 01 gasoline supply, a liquid dispensing line in said housing connected to said pump, said line terminating in a flexible ho'se provided with a nozzle, a switch controlling member mounted on said housing and having a portion adapted to form a support for the nozzle when not in use, said portion permanently extending outside of said housing in all shiftable positions, and said member having-,a portion constructed and arranged to co-operate with the housing when said control member is shifted to a position in'which the pump is inoperative so as to prevent the nozzle being supported by said member.
29. In a gasoline dispensing device, the combination with a housing adapted to support a pump-controlling switch forforcing liquid through a liquid dispensing line, said line terminating in a dispensing nozzle, a lever pivoted to said housing to swing in a vertical plane and having a portion connected with the switchoperating mechanism, the upper portion of 'the lever being constructed and arranged to form a support for the nozzle when not in use and being permanently outside of said housing in all shifted positions, and said lever having a portion adapted to co-operate with the housing when said lever is swung to vertical position to prevent the nozzle being supported on said lever.
30. In a liquid dispensing apparatus, the combination with a housing, a switch in said housing for controlling the motor of the liquid forcing pump, means in said housing forming a liquid dispensing line including a flexible hose disposed outside of said housing and terminating in a nozzle, an arm pivotally mounted on said housing and manually shiftable from a substantially horizontal position to a substantially vertical position and shiftable .from said vertical position back to said substantially horizontal position, said'arm having means forming a support for the nozzle when the arm is in sub ,tantially horizontal position, said-arm having 1. leans for preventing said arm forming a support for the nozzle when the arm is in substantially vertical position, said nozzle supporting means being disposed wholly outside of said housing.

31. In a liquid dispensing apparatus, the combination of a housing, a pump switch, a liquid dispensing line terminating in a nozzle having a valve provided with a manually shiftable control means, a manually shiftable control means for the pump switch, a support for the hose when not in use, said housing having an opening disposed adjacent said support, and instrumentalities associated with said opening, said support and one of said manually shiftable means for locking one of said manually shiftable means against operation, and for simultaneously obstructing access to the operation of the other manually shiftable means.
32. Liquid dispensing apparatus comprising means for housing a portion of the apparatus, power-operated pumping means, a plurality of delivery conduits served by said pumping means and each including a flexible hose terminating with a ncmzle, said housing means having openings one for each nozzle in which openings the nozzles may be partially inserted, said housing means having means for supporting the nozzles when thus inserted, a plurality of members one for each opening independently movable into and out of position to obstruct insertion of a nozzle in its opening, means for starting said pumping means and efiective only when one of said nozzles has been withdrawn from its opening and one member moved into said position, and means for stopping said pumping means and eflective only when all said members have been moved out of said position.

Liquid dispensing apparatus comprising means for housing a portion of the apparatus, power-operated pumping means, a plurality of delivery conduits served by said pumping means and each including a flexible hose extending outside said housing means and terminating with a nozzle, a valve in each of said conduits, said housing means having openings one for each nozzle in which openings the nozzles may be partial- 1y inserted, said housing means having means for supporting the nozzles when thus inserted, a plurality of members one for each opening, independently movable into and out of position to obstruct insertion of a nozzle in its openings, means whereby each member controls the opening or closing of a said valve accordingly as the member is moved into or out of said position, means for starting said pumping means, and means efiective only when all said members have been moved out of said position to stop .opening and including shiftable means independently movable into and out of position to obstruct, insertion of a nozzle in its opening, mechanism for starting said pumping means and eflective when one of said nozzles has been withdrawn from its opening, and mechanism for stopping said pumping means eflective only when allof said shiftable means have been moved into position to permit the nozzles to be inserted in their respective openings.
35. In a liquid dispensing system, means forming a liquid flow line terminating in a valvecontrolled nozzle, a support for the nozzle when not in use including means to lock said nozzle valve so that it cannot be operated, liquid pumping means, and metering means in the liquid flow line, control means for the pump, and operable means for the control means engageable by the nozzle when on its support and adapted to prevent operation of the control means when said nozzle is on its support, said control means being free from actuation when the nozzle is removed for the support.
36. In a liquid dispensing device, in combination with a liquid flow line having a delivery hose provided with a valve operating member, a support for the hose when not in use including means adapted tobe engaged by said valve actuating member and arranged for securing said valve-actuating member in operating position, an electric switch, a pump in the flow line adapted to be controlled by said switch, actuating means for said switch including devices adapted to be engaged by the nozzle to render the switch inoperative when the nozzle is on its support and adapted to render the switch free for operation when: the nozzle is removed from its support.

38. In a liquid dispensing apparatus, the combination of a flow line provided with a hose terminating in a valve-controlled nozzle, a support for the nozzle when not in use, means for locking said nozzle valve in inoperative position when the nozzle is on its support, mechanism for governing the flow of liquid through said hose, control means for said mechanism, and actuating means for said control means having a shiitable part disposed, when said part is in pump on position, to prevent the return of the nozzle to its. support, and movable to permit return of the nozzle to its support when said control means is in pump oif position, said nozzle being constructed and arranged when on its support to prevent movement of said control actuating means to the pump on position.
39. In dispensing apparatus, the combination with dispensing mechanism comprising a flexible hose having a discharge nozzle, of a pump connected to said dispensing mechanism, pump control mearis, a valve for controlling the flow through said hose, a pivoted lever adapted to support said nozzle when not in use, a laterally extending arm connected to said valve, a link pivoted to said arm and suspended therefrom, an additional link pivoted to the inner end of said nozzle-supporting lever, a pivoted connection between the lower ends of said links, and means connecting said pivotal connection with the pump control means.
40. In a dispensing apparatus, the combinationwith dispensing mechanism comprising a flexible hose having a discharge nozzle, of a pump connected to said dispensing mechanism, pump control means, a valve for controlling the fiow through said hose, a lever adapted to support the nozzle when not in use, a link pivoted to the inner end of said lever, an arm connected to said valve, a link pivoted to said arm, a pivotal connection forthe links, and means including a pin and slot connection between the lower ends of said links for pivotal connection with the pump control means.
41. A liquid dispensing device comprising a housing, an electrically operated pump, a switch in said housing for controlling the actuation of said pump, switch actuating means, a liquid dispensing line in said housing connected to said pump, said line terminating in a flexible hose disposed outside of said housing, said hose having a valve-controlled nozzle provided with a valve actuating member, manually shiftable means disposed permanently outside of said housing and having connections with the switch actuating means, said manually shiftable means forming mechanism so that when said manually shiftable means is shifted to substantially horizontal position the switch is moved to render the pump inoperative and when manually shifted to raised position the switch is moved to render the pump operative, said manually shiftable means forming means adapted to support the hose nozzle when in substantially horizontal position and being incapable of supporting the nozzle when in raised position.
42. A liquid dispensing device comprising a housing, an electrically operated pump, a switch in said housing for controlling the actuation of said pump, switch actuating means, a liquid dispensing line in said housing connected to said pump, said line terminating in a flexible hose disposed outside of said housing, said hose having, a valve-controlled nozzle provided/with a valve-actuating member, a switch-actuating member having a nozzle supporting portion, means for mounting said member on said housing for manual pivotal movementabout a substantially horizontal axis and so that said nozzle supporting portion shall be positioned outside of said housing in all its shifted positions and so that said nozzle-supporting portion shall be shiftable from a substantially horizontal position to a generally vertical position with its upper portion substantially close to the vertical wall of said housing, connections from said member to said switch actuating means for moving the switch to pump-operating position when the nozzle-supporting portion is manually moved to horizontal position and for moving the switch to pump-operative position when the nozzlesupporting portion is raised to generally vertia cal position, and means on said nozzle-supporting portion acting in association with the vertical wall of said housing when said nozzle-supporting portion is in its raised position for preventing the positioning of the nozzle on said portion.
43. A liquid dispensing device comprising a housing, an electrically operated pump, a switch in said housing for controlling the actuation of said pump, switch-actuating means, a liquid dispensing line in said housing connected to said pump, said line terminating in a flexible hose disposed outside of said housing, said hose having a valve-controlled nozzle provided with a shiftable means from operation and for preventing operation of the valve-actuating member of the nozzle valve.
44. A liquid dispensing device comprising a housing, an electrically operatedpump, a switch in said housing for controlling the actuation of said pump, switch-actuating means, a liquid dispensing line in said housing connected to said pump, said line terminating in a flexible hose disposed outside of said housing, said hose having a valve-controlled nozzle provided with a valveactuating member, manually shiftable means permanently disposed outside of said housing, and having connections for operating the switchactuating means, and instrumentalities associated with said housing and said manually shiftable means including a single locking means for locking said nozzle stationarily relative to said housing and for preventing operation of said nozzle valve actuating member, said instrumentalities also locking said manually shiftable means from moving the pump switch to pumpoperating position.
