Description

J. DIOU Oct. 10, 1933.
MOP
Filed Feb. 15, 1933 INVENTQR Patented Oct. 10, 1933 UNETED STATES PATENT orrics 1 Claim.
This invention relates to mops and it has for one of its objects the provision of means Whereby the mop proper may be shaken by rocking relative to the handle so that dust may be removed from the mop.
The invention will be fully and comprehensively understood from a consideration of the following detailed description when read in con-- nection with the accompanying drawing which forms part of the application, with the understanding, however, that the improvement is capable of extended application and is not confined to the exact showing of the drawing nor to the precise construction described and, therefore, such changes and modifications may be made therein as do not affect the spirit of the invention nor exceed the scope thereof as expressed in the appended claim.
in the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a fragmentary plan View of the mop of my invention; and
Fig. 2 is a section taken onpthe line 22 of Fig. 1.
Refe ing to the drawing for a more detailed description thereof, the device comprises a handle 5 to an end of which at 6 is pivotally mounted a frame 7 which carries the mop proper designated by the numeral 8. The frame is in the form. of a bell crank lever so that the frame and the mop proper may be given a rocking motion to free the latter of material picked up by it. A red 9 is freely secured to the frame at the point 13 and extends along the handle. A pulley 11 is disposed in said handle and an elongate flexible member 12 is trained over said pulley and is connected to a movable member 13 to which the lower end of the rod 9 is also connected. Said movable member 13 is partly within a casing 14, the end 15 of which constitutes a stop against which a flange 16, forming part of the movable member 13, is impacted when the free end of the elongate flexible member 12 is pulled toward the proximal end of the handle. The casing is, which is secured to the handle 5 by means of screws 17, comprises a partition 18 through which may slide a pin 19 which is secured to and moves with the member 13. The lower end of the pin 19 has a disc 20 attached to it which is larger than the diameter of the pin. A helical spring 21 encircles the pin with one end bearing against the partition 18 and the other end against the disc 20. When the free end of the elongate flexible member 12 is pulled toward the proximal end of the handle, 35 the spring is compressed and the compressed spring furnishes the power for returning the mop to normal position afterit-has been moved in one direction by the pulling of the rope. Said eiongate flexible member passes through a tube 22 secured to the handle in a position opposite the casing 14. The distal end portion of the handle includes a split sleeve 25 whichis fitted over the corresponding end portion of the body of the handle and is secured thereto by means '5;
of a wing nut 26 tightened on a bolt 2'7 passing transversely through said sleeve.
What is claimed is:
A mopping device comprising a frame for holding a mop, a handle on which sai frame is rockpp ably mounted, an arm extending from said frame and forming a bell crank lever therewith, said arm extending transversely of said handle and terminating at a point removed therefrom, a rod pivotally connected to said arm and extend 5? ing along said hand e and adapted to be moved lengthwise to rock said frame, a coiled spring, means connecting said rod to one end of said spring, holding means on the handle engaging the other end of the coiled spring, a pulley 9-9 mounted on said handle, a rope connected to said connecting means and adapted to move said rod and tension said spring, said rope being trained on said pulley and extending along said handle toward the proximal end thereof, and stop means on the handle for limiting the movement of said connecting means when the operator pulls on the rope.
