(01. 410) This invention hasfor itsobject, to provide an improved toilet article or hand operated device for washing the face or body, which in use can be caused to exert a degree of suction tending to remove dirt from the pores of the skin as well as providing for cleansing the surface of the skin. The improved device for toilet use comprises a cup shaped part of India-rubber 01' other waterproof and resilient material adapted to hold a sponge or likeabsorbent pad, the edge or border portion of the cup shaped part having a convenient degree of flexibility so that this portion can be bent or distorted to force air or water out of the cup and allowed to recover its normal shape,

15' thereby in this change of shape exerting a sucking action on the flesh against which it is held or pressed. The cup shaped portion can be provided with a part adapted to serve as a handle and may also be provided with a valve to permit escape of air from the cup when the latter is deformed by exerting pressure thereon whilst the rim of the cup is held in contact with the skin of the face or other surface to be washed.

A convenient form of the improved toilet article in accordance with this invention is shown in the accompanying drawing in which:

Figure 3 illustrates a modified constructional form of the article, partly in section.

As shown in this drawing the improved toilet article comprises a cup-shaped portion a of India-rubber with a thin wall 12 preferably diminishing in thickness towards the rim 0 of the cup so that by pressing this rim against the face or other surface, the wall of the cup will be distorted to expel air or water from the interior of the cup, the said wall however having sufficient resiliency to tend to recover its normal shape when the deforming pressure is released whereby a reduction of pressure occurs within the cup and a sucking action is exerted on the surface within the area bounded by the rim of the cup pressed against it.

A sponge d or pad of absorbent material can be placed in the cup and fixed or removably held therein in any suitable manner. It can be held in the cup, for example, by frictional engagement or removably held in position by an. inwardly projecting flange e, arranged at any convenient distance from the rim 0, dividing the cup interiorly into two compartments, the distance of the flange from the rim 0 being determined, for ex- :ample, in accordance with the flexibility of the wall of the cup so as to allow the sponge d or like pad to be brought into contact with the surface againstwhich the saidrim is pressed. The inwardly projecting flange provides a central opening through which the sponge or pad may be inserted or withdrawn from the inner compartment.

The cup portion a is provided with a stem or handle ,1 by which the toilet article can be held and moved over the part to be washed in a gymtory or reciprocatory movement. The stem or handle 1 may be solid or it can be made with a central chamber or bore g which can be shaped to act as or to receive a valve allowing escape of air or water through the said chamber or bore but preventing a reflux of air therethrough. inserted in the bore 9. This valve body is held in the bore g by a bead or flange i and comprises a short tubular portion contracting to form a thin walled flattened tubular portion :i with parts of the inner surface in contact to close the tubular portion 7' against exterior pressure whilst interior pressure expands the said tubular portion a to allow escape of air or liquid therethrough.

In the modified constructional form illustrated in Figure 3 the absorbent pad (1 is retained within the cup by a sheet is of perforated material such as India-rubber having a roughened,toothed or like surface, secured at its edges to the bead e and forming a partition or membrane dividing the space within the cup, this membrane being slit to allow introduction and removal of the pad. The sheet is of roughened perforated material may be attached or cemented to the pad (1 of sponge rubber or other absorbent pad held in the cup.

I claim:

1. A toilet article for washing the face or body, comprising a single walled cup-shaped member of resilient material, a perforate division wall in the interior of said cup-shaped member to divide the member into an inner compartment and an outer compartment, a pad of absorbent material arranged in said inner compartment, and an air escape bore extending from the inner compartment to the exterior of the toilet article.

2. A toilet article for washing the face or body, comprising a single walled cup-shaped member of resilient material, an annular flange in the interior of the cup-shaped member and a sheet of perforated material secured at its edges to said flange forming an inner compartment and an outer compartment in said cup-shaped member extending from each side of the flange respeceach side of the flange respectively, a pad of absorbent material arranged in said inner compartment, and an air escape bore extending from the inner compartment to the exterior of the toilet article.

4. A toilet article for washing the face or body, comprising a cup-shaped member, ahandle on said cup-shaped member, an annular flange on the interior surface of the cup-shaped member forming an inner compartment extending from one side of the flange and an outer compartment with a flexible wall diminishing in thickness toward the rim of the cup-shaped member extending from the other side of the flange, a pad of absorbent material arranged in said inner compartment, and an air escape bore extending from the inner compartment to the exterior of the toilet article.

5. A toilet article for washing the face or body, comprising a cup-shaped member of resilient material, an inner compartment and an outer compartment in said cup-shaped member, a pad of absorbent material arranged in said inner compartment, an air escape bore extending from the interior to the exterior of said cup-shaped member, a valve with a short tubular portion and a thin walled flattened tubular portion arranged in said air escape bore, a groove in said air escape bore, and a bead said valve to engage the said groove.
