IMPROVEMENT IN STOP-MOTIONS FOR DRAWING-FRAMES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 192,682, dated July 3, 1877; application led March 24, 1877.
To all 'whom it 'may concern Be it known that I, JEROME B. CLARKE, of Woonsocket, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Stop-Motion for Drawing-Frames and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is a representation of a side elevation of my stop-motion for drawing-frames, and Fig. 2 is a plan Aview thereof.
The object of this invention is to provide a drawing-frame with devices for stopping motion whenever the sliver breaks or'a knob or enlargement of the same comes in contact with the trumpet,
In the accompanying drawings, A designates the bed-piece of my apparatus, and B a small standard supported thereon, to which is pivoted the lower end of a bar, O, that supports a trumpet, D, through which the sliver passes. The side of the lower part of said bar O is recessed at C', so as to leave a conveXity above and another below the same, and in said recess sets the rear end of a lever, E, which has the same pivot as trumpet-carrying bar O. Lever E consists of a rear part, El, and a forward part, E, that are pivoted together, provided with engaging-shoulders c, so that the said lever can be bent downward, but not upward.' Said downward bending is resisted by a spring, F, which is attached by one end to rear' section El, and bears at the other end upward against a screw-threaded stud, G, which is adjustable backward and forward in a longitudinal slot, H, of section E. The tension of said spring is regulated by said adjustment. The forward orfree end of said lever is provided with a catch or hook, I, which, when in its lowest position, engages with any suitable devices to stop the machine. An adjustable weight, J, is also attached to said section E2, and a staple, upright loop, or slotted standard. K, supported onv bed A, limits the upward motion of lever E.
When the sliver is running properly through trumpet Dit holds catch Iup, so that themachinery will not be impeded; but when the sliver breaks, weight J causes lever E to fall, stoppingthe machine. When a knob, knot, or enlargement of the sliver reaches trumpet D, it (being unable to pass through the same) turns said trumpet on its pivot, raising said lever until staple or slotted standard K bends down section E and catch I stops the machine as before mentioned. i Stud G may be smooth instead of screw-threaded, a slotted plate may be substituted for standard K, and the other devices may be modified in various ways without departing from my invention.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a stop-motion for drawing-frames, the combination, substantially as hereinbefore described, of the sectional stop-motion lever E, the spring F, the sliver-trumpet D, and astaple, K, all constructed and arranged for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of weighted slotted section Epivoted section El, spring F, and adjusting-stud G, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
