ILLUMINATING DEVICE FOR HYDROMETERS' AND THE LIKE Filed Nov. 26, 1952 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Invenlor By @Mmim Patented Aug. 22, 1933 ILLUMINATING DEVICE sort HYDROM ETERS 'ANDTHE LIKE I I ,Gosta Richard Carlson, Raritan, N. J.
Application November 26, .1932] Serial N;"644,527 V 3'Olaims. (Cl. 2 40-6.4)1
This invention relates to an illuminating de-.
vice for hydrometers and the like, the general object of the invention being to provide a holder for thehydrometer containing a window and an electric bulb for illuminating apart of the hydrometerwhich is visible through the window so that the hydrometer or other testing instrument can be readily read. 7
This invention also consists in certainother features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accom panying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims. 7
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like 1 characters denote like 'or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which: 4
' Figure 1 is a view of a hydrometer showing the device applied thereto. Y
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional viewthrough the body of the device which carries the battery and bulb. 2
Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the device shown in Fig. 2.
and cap removed.
Fig. 5 is a view of the cap.
Fig. '6 is a view of the contact member.
Fig. 7 is a 'view of the disk of insulating material. I
Fig. 8 is a sectional view through the window member.
In these drawings, the numeral indicates the" body of the device which-is formed at its outer edge with a vertically arranged chamber 2 terminating short of the top of the body and having its lower end extending below the lower edge of the body and this end isexteriorly threaded to receive the closing cap 3. This chamber is adapted to receive a battery 4 and a substantially L-shaped contact member 5 which has its long arm fastened to a part of the body 1 by a screw or the like passing through the opening 6 in 5 said long arm and insulated therefrom.
The short arm has an intermediate olfset downwardly extending part which is arranged adjacent the top of the chamber and is adapted to engage the upper post of the battery as shown in Fig. 2. A screw 7 passes through the cap and has an enlargedhead 8 whereby the screw can be turned to a position where its free end will engage the battery and force the battery against the contact member 5 and thus close the circuit to the bulb 9' the base of which is Fig. 4 is a bottom plan view with the battery threaded in a socket member 10 which passes transversely through the body 1 with its reduced end located in the chamber 2 and engaging the lower end of the long arm of the contactmember 5. v i Thatsideof the body opposite the side which 5 carries the chamber 2 has a concave recess therein in which'thefbulb 9 is located, as shown in Fig. 2. The upper and lower projecting portions formed by this recesscarry the substantially semi-circular clamps 11 each of which has an 5 inner lining 12 of felt or the like. These clamps are adapted to engage portions of a hydrometer such as shown at A in Fig. 1 and after the clamps are so engaged'with the hydrometer a housing B of the shape shown in Figs. 1 and 8 is placed over the-hydrometer into engagement with portions of the body 1 and the clainps 11.
'Thismember B is formed with a window 13 and said member is of substantially semicircular shape with the flanges 14 extending from the side edges thereof for'fitting over portions of the body 1, these flanges covering the concave recess in the body so that the rays of light from the bulb are confined and will illuminate that portion of a hydrometer over which the device v is-placed so that the reading of the hydrometer can readily bemade through the Window 13, as shown in Fig. 1. g s g I Thus I have provided means for facilitating thev reading of the scale on a hydrometer or 5- similar device. A disk 15 insulates the contact member from the top'wall of the chamber.
It is thought from the foregoing description that'the advantages and novel features of theinvention will be readily apparent.
It is to be understood that changes may be made in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts provided that such changes fall-within the scope of the appended claims. 7 T1 .Having thus described my'invention, what -I claim as new is:- v
, 1. A device for facilitating the reading of a hydrometer or the like comprising a'body having a recess therein opening out through one edge of,
of-the body, one at the top and the' other at the bottom, for engaging the hydrometer and anelongated housing having an elongated opening there- 1 in, having its ends fitting over the clamps with the walls of the opening engaging the body, with the ends of the housing being open, said housing covering part of the hydrometer and having a 9 I window therein for exposing a portion of the hydrometer.
2. A device of the class described comprising a body having a recess therein opening out through one edge of the body and through portions of the sides thereof a lamp in said recess, split ring clamps attached to said edge'of the body, one above the recess and the other below the recess, a housing having an opening in one side thereof with its ends fitting over the clamps, flanges ex tending outwardly from the walls ofthe opening in the housing for covering the sides of the recess, said housing having in a part of the housing. a
3. A device of the class described comprising a body having a recess'therein opening out through one edgeof the body and through portions of the sides thereof, a lamp in said recess, split ring.
clamps attached to said edge of the body, one
in a part of the housing,
its ends open and a window 7 said chamber an L-shaped member in the chamberhav'ing one limb engaging a contact of the lamp and its other limb adapted to engage a part of the battery, a cap for closing the open end of the chamber and a screw carried by the cap for forcing the battery against the second limb of the L'-s'hap'ed member.
