through a dispensing hose. To keep this type of liquid dispensing apparatus properly primed, it must be provided with a foot valve preventing draining back of the liquid when the device is inoperative.
Due to certain conditions, liquid in the system tends to expand, and to accommodate this expansion itis usual to provide an expansion chamber connected on the discharge side of the pump, the chamber being disconnected from the apparatus yand emptied after it has become filled with the expanded liquid. This, of course, is not only expensive as it cuts out the use of the device while this is being accomplished, but it is also dangerous as the draining operation may be overlooked.
It is an object of this invention to provide jan expansion chamber which is self-emptying.
Another object is to provide an expansion chamber for controlling and disposing of the expansion of gasoline created by the rising of temperature of the gasoline in the system.
A further object is to provide an expansin chamber which is inexpensive to make and maintain, and fulfills all requirements of operation and service.
With these and various other objects in view, the invention may consist of certain novel features of construction and operation as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the specication, drawing and claims appended hereto.
In the drawing, which illustrates embodiments of the device and wherein like reference characters are used to designate like parts- Figure 1 is a fragmentary sectional elevation of a liquid dispensing apparatus provided with an expansion chamber embodying the invention;
Figure 2 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional elevation of the expansion chamber illustrated in Figure 1;
Figure 3 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional elevation of a modied form of expansion chamber embodying the invention.
The liquid dispensing apparatus is shown as of the usual meter type, being provided with the pump 12 of the rotary type, the suction side of the pump being connected as at 14 to the source of liquid supply 16 through the foot valve 18. The outlet side of the pump is connected through the pipe 20 to the usual meter, measured quantities of gasoline passing through the meter, being indicated on the clock or registering mechanism 22, which may be reset through mechanism controlled by the knob 24. The pump is adapted to be operated by means of the motor 26 connected to the rotor of the pump through 65 -the belt or chain 28. The pump is controlled by the switch 30 operated by the hose supporting hook and switch 30 and 32, the hook and switch being adapted to support the manually operated nozzle 34 provided with the discharge hose 36 70 connected to the sight gauge 38, the liquidA passing from the meter through the sight gauge and being controlled by the nozzle 34.
In order to accommodate the expansion of the gasoline contained in the system, the expansion chamber 40 is provided connected through the pipe 42 to the pump on the .suction side thereof. The expansion chamber 40 consists essentially of the container 44 adapted to be closed at one end by the plug 46. The lower end of the container is provided with the valve tting 48 containing the valve seat 50 adapted to be normally closed by the egress or outlet valve 52 normally Amaintained in closed position by means of the spring 54 disposed between the valve and the tting 56. The valve 52 is provided with the inlet valve 58 normally` maintained in closed position by means of the'spring 60. It will thus be seen that the expanded liquid will flow through the pipe 42'into the container 44 through the ,inlet or ingress valve 58. i
When the liquid dispensing apparatus is put in operation to dispense gasoline or other liquid, suction will occur through the pipe 42, causing the valve 58 to seat, and I-1nseating the egress or outlet valve 52, thus exhausting the iiuid contained inthe container 44 during the dispensing operation. y
In the modification shown in Figure 3, the expansion chamber 62 consists essentially of the container 64, the lower end of the container being connected to the suction side of the pump through the tting 66 and the pipe 68. The fitting 66 is provided with the valve seat 70 normally closed by means of the` outletvalve 12 maintained Ain closed position by means of the spring '74. The upper end of the container i.. connected to thesuction side of the pump by means of the fittings 76 and 78, and the pipe 80. The fitting '78 is provided with the valve seat 82 normally closed by means of the inlet valve 84 normally maintained in closed position by means of the spring 86. It will be appreciated that the operation of this device is similar to that shown in Figure 2. That is, expansion of the gasoline in the system Will cause the liquid to oW through the pipe to unseat the valve 84, the liquid being then supplied to the expansion chamber 62. Operation of the pump will cause the valve 84 to be seated, and will cause the valve 72 to be opened, thus exhausting the liquid from the container through the pipe 68 for dispehsing operation.
It is to be understood that I do not wish to be limited by the exact embodiments of the device shown, which are merely by way of illustration and not limitation, as various and other forms of the device will of course be apparent to those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the claims.
I claim:
1. In liquid dispensing apparatus, the combination of a source of liquid supply, a pump, the suction side of said pump being connected to said source of liquid supply, discharge means, the discharge side of said pump being connected to said discharge means, a container including an expansion chamber connected to the suction side of said pump, and valve means for controlling ingress and egress to and from said container.
2. In liquid dispensing apparatus, the combination of a source of liquid supply, a pump, the suction side of said pump being connected t0 said source of liquid supply, discharge means, the discharge side of said pump being connected to said discharge means, a container including an expansion chamber connected to the suction side of said pump, a normally closed valve controlling ingress to said container, and a normally closed valve for controlling egress from said container.
3. In liquid dispensing apparatus, the combination of a source of liquid` supply, a pump, the suction side of said pump being connected to said source of liquid supply, discharge means, the discharge side of said pump being connected to said discharge means, a container including an expansion chamber connected to the suction side of said pump, a normally closed valve controlling ingress to said container, and a normally closed valve for controlling egree from said container, said valves being concentric.
4. In liquid dispensing apparatus, the combination of a source of liquid supply, a pump, the suction side of said pump being connected to said source of liquid supply, discharge means, the discharge side of said pump being connected to said discharge means, a container including an expansion chamber connected to the suction side of said pump, a normally closed valve controlling ingress to said container, and a normally closed valve for controlling egress from said container, one of said valves containing the other of said valves.
5. In liquid dispensing apparatus, the combination of a source of liquid supply, a pump, the suction'side of said pump being connected to said source of liquid supply, discharge means, the discharge side of said pump being connected to said discharge means, a container including an expansion chamber connected to the suction side of said pump, a normally closed valve controlling ingress to `said container, and a normally closed valve for controlling egress from said container, the egress of said valve containing the other of said valves.
6. In liquid dispensingapparatus, the combination of a source of liquid supply, a pump, the suction side of said pump being connected to said source of liquid supply, discharge means, the discharge side of said pump being connected to said discharge means, a container including an expansion chamber connected to the suction side of said pump, a normally closed valve controlling ingress to said container, and a normally closed valve for controlling egress from said con*- tainer, said valves being connected to said container at opposite ends thereof.
7. In liquid dispensing apparatus, the combination of a source of liquid supply, a pump, the suction side of said pump being connected to said source of' liquid supply, discharge means, 'the discharge side of said pump being connected to said discharge means, a container including an expansion chamber connected to one side of said pump, a normally closed valve Acontrolling ingress to said container, and a normally closed valve for controlling egress from said container.

In liquid dispensing apparatus, the combination of a source of liquid supply, a pump, the suction side of said pump being connected to said source of liquid supply, discharge means, the discharge side of said'pump being connected to said discharge means, a container including an expansion chamber connected to one side of said pump, and valve means for controlling ingress and egress to and from said container.
9. In liquid dispensing apparatus, the combination of a source of liquid supply, a pump, the suction side of said pump being connected to said source of liquid supply, discharge means, the discharge side of said pump being connected to said discharge means, a container including an expansion chamber connected to one side of said pump, a normally closed valve controlling ingress to said container, and a normally closed valve for controlling egress from said container, one of said valves containing the other of said valves.
10. In liquid dispensing apparatus, the combination of a source of liquid supply, a pump, the suction side of said 'pump being connected to said source of liquid supply, discharge means, the discharge side of said pump being connected to said discharge means, a container including an expansion chamber connected to one side of said pump, and a normally closed valve controlling ingress to said container, and a normally closed valve for controlling egress from said container, the egress of said valves containing the other of said valves.
11. A container having an expansion chamber, a normally closed valve controlling egress from said container, and a normally closed valve controlling ingress to said container.
12. A container having an expansion chamber, a normally closed valve controlling egress from said container, and a normally closed valve controlling ingress to said container, said last named valve being carried by said rst named valve.
