This invention relates to new and useful improvements in window frames.
Building contractors or carpenters usually buy the window frames necessary for the particular 5 job or jobs on which they are working, from local lumber dealers or milling concerns. These lumber dealers or milling concerns usually assemble window frames of various dimensions on a quantity production basis, and this is made possible in view of the fact that they usually buy the various casing members, jamb members, stops, and the like, already finished and out to predetermined lengths, from a concern or concerns located frequently at distant points, which points ar usually selected due to their proximity to supplies of unfinished lumber, and the like. The lumber dealers or milling concerns are desirous of utilizing more or less unskilled labor for assembling window frames and for that reason, it is necessary for the concerns which originally finish and cut the various window frame elements to present these elements to the assembling concerns in condition for quick and easy assembly by unskilled help.
It therefore is the primary object of this invention to provide a window frame which may be quickly and easily assembled by lumber dealers or milling concerns without necessitating the use of skilled labor and with the assurance that the window frames will be true and made in complete compliance with certain requirements or dimensions.
It is a further object of this invention to provide a window frame construction which is entirely weatherproof and waterproof.
Other material and specific objects will be determined during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Figure 1 is a front perspective view of one corner of a window frame embodying this invention;
Figure 2 is a rear perspective view of the same corner of the window frame shown in Fig. 1;
Figure 3 is an exploded view of the various elements as they are seen in Fig. 2 prior to sepa ration of the same;
Figure 4 is a fragmentary horizontal sectional view of the window frame; and
Figure 5 is a detailed perspective view of one corner portion of a vertical jamb member.
In the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustrationis shown a preferred embodiment of. this'invention, the numeral 10 designates an outside head or horizontal casing member, the rear face of which is provided with a plurality of longitudinally extending grooves 11 which are suitably 6 and uniformly spaced with respect to each other.
Figure l discloses an outside vertical or side casing member 12, which has its upper edge fiushly engaging the lower longitudinal edge of the head casing member 10. This vertical casing 5 member 12 also is provided with a plurality of longitudinally extending grooves 13.
Associated with the outer head or horizontal casing member 10 is a head or horizontal jamb member 14. This jamb member is longitudinally grooved at 15 to receive a window sash stop or parting stop 16. One longitudinal edge of the jamb member 14 is provided with a plurality of longitudinally extending ribs 17 which are adapted to be received in similarly shaped grooves 18 of a horizontally extending or top blind stop 19. This blind stop is provided with a longitudinally extending tongue 20 adapted to be received within one of the grooves 11 of the head casing member 10. 1
Operatively associated with the outer vertical or side casing member 12 is a vertical or side jamb member 21. This jamb member is provided with a longitudinally extending groove 22 intended to I receive a window or parting stop 23. It will be seen, by inspecting Fig. 1, that the jamb members 14 and 21 are positioned relative to each other so that the window or parting stops 16 and 23 will be in vertical alignment with respect to each other, or will occupy the same central vertical plane. One longitudinal edge of the vertical or side jamb member 21 is provided with a plurality of longitudinally extending tongues 24, which are received in similarly shaped grooves 25 formed in a vertical or side blind stop 26. The outer face of this blind stop 26 is formed with a longitudinally extending tongue 27, adapted to be received within one of the grooves 13 formed in the vertical or side casing member 12.
It will be noted, by inspecting the various figures, that the vertical or side jamb member 21 is formed with a horizontally extending groove 28, which is spaced a suitable distance inwardly of the upper edge of the same. This groove 28 is provided to receive an end portion of the top or horizontal jamb member 14 to form an interlocking fit between these respective jamb members. In Fig. 5, it will be seen that this groove 28 extends all the way to the edge face of the jamb 21 which is provided with the tongues 24 1 0 intended to fit into the grooves 25 of the vertical blind stop 26. This vertical jamb 21 extends above the joint or seam 29, formed between the abutting edge portions of the outer casing members 10 and 12. The horizontal or top casing member 10, in addition to having the longitudinally extending grooves 11 formed in the rear face thereof, is provided with a transversely extending or vertical groove 30, which extends the full width of this casing member. The vertical or side blind stop 26 projects above the top jamb member 14, and the side casing and jamb members 12 and 21 respectively, so as to entirely traverse the width of the head or top casing member 10. The tongue 27 formed on this blind stop 26 also is received within the groove 30 formed in the casing member 10 for interlocking this casing member to the blind stop. It also will be seen that the blind stop acts as a brace between the casing members 10 and 12, for firmly joining these two members together. The top or horizontal blind stop 19 has its end 31' flushly abutting against the inner longitudinal edge of the vertical blind stop 26, as best illustrated in Fig. 1.
It will be seen that the construction of this window frame has been illustrated by presenting in detail the upper left-hand corner portion of the frame when viewed from the outside of the frame. It is to be understood that the remaining upper corner of the window frame is to be con structed in the same manner as that illustrated and described. It will further be seen that a window frame has been shown hich may be very readily and easily assembled and which will be sure to comply with specification dimensions and will be true in every respect.
It is to be understood that the form of this invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same, and that various changes in the shape, size and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described the invention, I claim:
1. A window or like frame comprising outer casing members, a jamb member provided for each casing member, and blind stops interposed between the respective casing and jamb members, one of said blind stops traversing an end of the remaining blind stop to project laterally therefrom to traverse the full width of the casing member for said remaining blind stop for interconnecting and bracing the said casing members.
2. A window or like frame comprising outer casing members, a jamb member provided for each casing member, and blind stops interposed between the respective casing and jamb members, one of said blind stops traversing an end of the remaining blind stop to project laterally therefrom to traverse the full width of the casing member for said remaining blind stop for interconnecting and bracing the said casing members, said blind stops being connected to their respective jamb and casing members by tongue and groove formation.
3. A window or like frame comprising outer casing members, a jamb member provided for each casing member, and blind stops interposed between the respective casing and jamb members, one of said blind stops traversing an end of the remaining blind stop to project laterally therefrom to traverse the full width of the casing member for said remaining blind stop for interconnecting and bracing the said casing members, the projecting end of the said blind stop having a tongue and groove connection with the casing member it traverses.
4. A window or like frame comprising a vertical and a horizontal casing member, each of said casing members having a groove formed in one face thereof, with the said groove for the horizontal casing member extending the full width thereof and in alignment with the groove for the vertical casing member, a blind stop secured to both of said casing members and having a tongue received in and extending the full length of both of said grooves, a jamb member connected to said blind stop, a second jamb member connected to the first jamb member, and a second blind stop interposed between the second jamb member and one of the casing members.
5. A window or like frame comprising horizontal and vertical casing members, each of said casing members having grooves formed longitudinally in their inner faces, the horizontal casing member having a groove extending transversely of said inner face with the said transverse groove arranged in alignment with one of the longitudinal grooves in the vertical casing member.
