GEORGE W. HUNTER, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN LlFTINGi-JACKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 192,370, dated June 26, 1877; application filed June 6, 1877. i
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. HUNTER, of the city of Washington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lifting-Jacks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, in Which- Figure 1 is a side elevation, and Fig. 2 is a section, showing the several parts and their relative arrangement.
The object of my invention is to provide a convenient and efiicient device to operate as a wagon-jack; and to this end it consists in the combination of the parts shown.
A suitable base and standard being provided, a notched traveler, B, is inserted for elevating the weight. At or near the top of the standard is provided ears, in which the operating-lever E is pivoted. On the same pivot with the lever E is hung a pawl or catch, F, having slots f for holding the traveler B when elevated. The pawl or catch F serves to hold the traveler or ratchet bar B as said traveler is raised by means of the lever E and the pawl A. When it is desired to lower the traveler B, pawl'F is elevated and placed to rest in a notch, 01, in the upper end of the main standard, thereby allowing the pawl A to rest upon the pawl F, whereby both become detached from the traveler or ratchet.
A is the lifting-pawl, loosely connected with and surrounding the traveler B, and having a roller, 0, upon which the horn E of the lever operates to lift the part B and its superadded weight.
The operation .of this device is obvious to those skilled in the art, and further description is superfluous.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the griping-pawl A, traveling bar B, lever E, and adjustable slotted han-ging pawl F, arranged to trip pawl A, as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I aflix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
GEO. W. HUNTER. Witnesses: WARREN G. STONE, EDWARD H. THOMAS.
