Patented Aug. 15, 1933 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE NEW RESERVING PREPARATION AND RESERVE DYEING PROCESS No Drawing. Application August 20,
Serial No. 476,730, and in Germany September 16 Claims.
The present invention relates to new reserving preparations and a process of reserving materials to be dyed with vat dyestuffs.
I have found that polyvinyl alcohols, especially when mixed with an oxidizing agent, such as, for instance, sodium meta-nitrobenzene sulfonate, sodium bichromate, or the like, are good agents for reserving materials which are to be dyed with vat dyestuffs. They are used, for instance, in the following manner: The material is printed with a paste containing a polyvinyl alcohol, water and an oxidizing agent, either alone or mixed with a substance having a mechanically reserving action, such as kaolin, drying the material and dyeing it in the usual manner in the warm dye liquor of a vat dyestuff. During this process the polyvinyl alcohols are precipitated, perhaps coagulated, by means of the alkalies present, particularly in the heat, and they, therefore, adhere to the parts of the material which have been printed and, in conjunction with the oxidizing agent incorporated in them, act as reserves and prevent access of the vat dyestuiis to the portions of the material to which the preparations are applied.
The present process may also be applied for producing colored reserves. In this case the reserve printing paste is mixed with, for instance, a diazo component and the material to be printed is impregnated with a coupling component.
The following examples serve to illustrate the invention, but they are not intended to limit it thereto:
I. White-reserve-printing-preparation 600 grams of an aqueous solution of polyvinyl alcohol of 25% strength are mixed with 200 grams of sodium meta-nitrobenzene sulfonate dissolved in 200 grams of water 1000 grams.
The preparation is printed on the material, dried and dyed at 75 C80 C in the following vat, whereafter the material is washed and dried: Dye-liquor '7 grams of N-dihydro-l.2-1'.2'-anthraquinone azine powder '75 grams of glucose (1:1) 848 grams of boiling water cc. of caustic soda solution of 40 Be 10 grams of hydrosulfite concentrated powder 1 lite The material is dyed in this solution from 30 to 60 seconds. a
II. Red-reserve-printing-color 600 grams of an aqueous solution of polyvinyl 60 alcohol of 25% strength 100 grams of sodium meta-nitrobenzene sulfonate 100 cc. of the diazo solution of 5-chloro-2-aminotoluene 20 grams of crystallized acetate of sodium 180 cc. of water 1000 grams.
The red-reserve-printing-color is printed on material previously impregnated with the naphthol-preparation mentioned afterwards, dried intensely and dyed at C- C in the liquor as indicatedin Example 1, washed, soaped at boiling temperature, rinsed hot and dried. 5
III. Orange-reserve-printing-color 600 grams of an aqueous solution of polyvinyl alcohol of 25% strength,
100 grams of sodium meta-nitrobenzene sulfo- 80 nate,
100 cc. of the diazo solution of m-chloraniline,
20 grams of crystallized sodium acetate,
180 cc. of water 1000 grams.
The material is printed and dyed as in ,Example II.

Naphthol-preparation:
20 grams of beta-hydroxynaphthoic acid-5- chloro-2-toluidide are made into a paste with 20 grams of sodium Turkey red oil of 50% strength 30 cc. of caustic soda solution of 34 B are added and made up with hot water to IV. Pink-reserve-printing color 40 grams of disulfuric acid ester of 4.4-dimethyl-6.6-dichloro-leuco-thioindigo 30 grams of ethylglycol grams of sodium benzylsulfanilate 150 grams of kaolin 2'70 grams of water 400 grams of an aqueous solution of polyvinyl alcohol of 25% strength 30 grams of ammonium sulfocyanate 20v grams of sodium chlorate 10 grams of vanadate of ammonium of 1% strength 1000 grams.
This color is printed on the material, dried, steamed either for 10 minutes in a Mather-Flatt or for 20 minutes in a steam vessel and dyed as in Example I.
I claim:
1. The process which comprises printing material with a reserve printing paste comprising a polyvinyl alcohol and an oxidizing agent, drying the material thus treated and dyeing it in a vat in the usual manner.
2. The process which comprises printing material with a reserve printing paste comprising a polyvinyl alcohol, water and an oxidizing agent, drying the material thus treated and dyeing it in a vat in the usual manner.
3. The process which comprises printing material with a reserve printing paste comprising a polyvinyl alcohol, water, a substance of a mechanically reserving action and an oxidizing agent, drying the material thus treated and dyeing it in a vat in the usual manner.
4. The process which comprises printing material, impregnated with a coupling component, with a reserve printing paste comprising a polyvinyl alcohol, water, a diazo component and an oxidizing agent, drying the material thus treated and dyeing it in a vat in the usual manner.
5. The process which comprises printing material, impregnated with a coupling component, with a reserve printing paste containing a polyvinyl alcohol, water, a substance having a mechanically reserving action, a diazo component and an oxidizing agent, drying the material thus treated and dyeing it in a vat in the usual manner. 6. The process which comprises printing material with a reserve printing paste comprising polyvinyl alcohol, water and sodium meta nitrobenzene sulfonate, drying the material thus treated and dyeing it in a vat in the usual manner.
7. The process which comprises printing material with a reserve printing paste comprising polyvinyl alcohol, water, kaolin and sodium meta-nitrobenzene sulfonate, drying the material thus treated and dyeing it in a vat in the usual manner.
8. The process which comprises printing material, impregnated with'the 5-chloro-2-toluidide of the p-hydroxy naphthoic acid, with a reserve printing paste comprising polyvinyl alcohol, water, a diazotized 5-chloro-2-amino-toluene and sodium meta-nitrobenzene sulfonate, drying the material thus treated and dyeing it in a vat in the usual manner.
9. The process which comprises printing material, impregnated with the 5-chloro-2-toluidide of the ,B-hydroxynaphthoic acid with a reserve printing paste containing polyvinyl alcohol, water, kaolin, a diazotized 5-chloro-2-aminotoluene and sodium meta-nitrobenzene sulfonate, drying the material thus treated and dyeing it in a vat in the usual manner.
10. The process which comprises printing material with a reserve printing paste containing polyvinyl alcohol, water, sodium benzylsulfanilate, kaolin, sodium chlorate and the disulfonic acid ester of 4.4-dimethyl-6.6'-dichloro-leucothioindigo, drying the material thus treated and dyeing it in a vat in the usual manner.
11. A new reserving preparation comprising polyvinyl alcohol and an oxidizing agent.
12. A new reserving preparation comprising polyvinyl alcohol, an oxidizing agent and a substance having a mechanically reserving action.
13. A new reserving preparation comprising, polyvinyl alcohol and sodium-meta-nitrobenzene sulfonate.
14. A new reserving preparation comprising polyvinyl alcohol, sodium meta-nitrobenzene sulfonate and kaolin.
15. A new reserving preparation comprising, polyvinyl alcohol and sodium benzylsulfanilate.
16. A new reserving preparation comprising, provinyl alcohol, sodium benzylsulfanilate and kaolin.
