2 Claims.
This invention relates to a folding bed construction which is more particularly intended for use as a toy or a childs crib; but may also be utilized for other purposes.
An object of the invention is to provide an improved means for automatically folding up parts of the bed, whichare connected with the main frame thereof, as the main frame is moved from its operative or extended position to a folded position with relation to a portion of the supporting frame work of the bed. Defining this feature of the invention morespecifically, it relates to an improved automatically foldable side frame construction which is connected with the main or bed frame proper in such a manner that when said main frame is moved from the extended position to an upstanding folded position, said side frame, which normally occupies an upstanding position wherein it is adapted to aid in keeping the bed covers in place, will automatically be folded down upon the face of the main frame of the bed.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved means for tensioning and keeping in place the spring element or mattress supporting element of the bed.
Still other objectsand advantages pertain to a folded bed construction which is provided with bearing means for supporting the main or mattress supporting part of the bed frame during its movements to and from the operative position; to simplify and render strong and efficient certain portions of the bed structure, and in other particulars to improve the operating parts of a folding bed construction, as will hereinafter be more fully set forth.
Other objects, advantages and features of the invention may hereinafter appear.
Referring to the accompanying drawing which illustrates what is at present deemed to be a preferred embodiment of the invention,
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the complete structure the foldable portion of the bed being shown in full lines in its extended or operative position and being shown in dotted lines in its folded position.
Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the bed in its operative position.
Fig. 3 is a plan view of a corner portion of the mattress supporting portion of the bed.
Fig. 4 is an elevation showing a portion of the structure on an enlarged scale, the line 4--4 of Fig. 1 indicating the plane of section.
Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken on the same plane as Fig. 4 but showing the parts illustrated in a different operative position.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the main frame or bed frame proper 5 comprises the side rails 6 which may be wooden bars, these rails being shown connected together at one end by means of the end bar '7 which extends across the front end of the bed between said rails. Across the other end of the main bed frame extends a rod 9 upon which is turnably mounted a roller 10 which fits loosely between the side rails 6.
The front portion of the main frame 5 is pivotally supported upon the front end frame 12 by means of a cross rod 13 which is provided near each end with a spacing sleeve l l designed to keep the main frame of the bed properly centered for free pivotal swinging.
Describing more in detail the end frame 12, said frame is shown having a base portion consisting of a bar of strap iron 15, each end portion of which is bent rearwardly to form side pieces 16. To this base portion are attached the front casters 14 and the rear casters 18. To each corner por tion of this base bar 15 is secured one of the uprights 19 of the head frame 20, each of these uprights being in turn connected with the horizontal topbar 21 of the frame 12 at that side of the bed. In spaced relation to its front end, each bar 21 is bent in an edgewise manner and continued downwardly to form the upright bar 22. The upright bars 22 at each side of the bed are preferably formed integral with the bottom cross bar 23 which completes the structure of the front end frame 12.
To each side of the main bed frame 5 is pivotally or hingedly secured a side frame 25 by any suitable means as by the hinges 26. The lower or hinged portion of this frame at each side of the bed is operatively connected with the front frame 12 by means of a link 27 which cooperates with the hinges 26 in such a manner that swinging said main frame to an operative position causes said side frame to assume an upright position with relation to said main frame, and the reverse movement of said main frame causes said side frame to assume a folded position. The side frames 25 are moved to their upright positions by the pull or traction exerted upon them by the links 25. Said side frame is constructed in any preferred manner being shown in the drawing as including a top bar 25a which is united to the base portion of the frame by means of the small cross bars 251). This construction provides means not only for keeping the bed covers in place but for preventing infants or young children which may occupy the bed from rolling out of the bed.
A stop bracket 5a secured to the main frame limits both the up and down movements of the foldable portion of the bed. 7
In order to adapt the links 27 to cooperate with the side frames of the bed in the manner stated, each of said links has one of its ends pivotally secured to the base portion of a said side frame as by means of a screw bolt 28 which passes through the base portion of said frame 25, a spacing nut 29 being provided, and the link having a looped end portion which is fitted with a working fit between said spacing nut and the head of said screw bolt. The other end of each link is provided with an eye portion which fits loosely within a hole 30 through the upper portion of the front frame 12, said hole being considerably larger than the portion of the link which passes therethrough, and there also being considerable clearance be tween the eye of the link and the portion of the metal which is included within said eye so that the link may freely perform a compound swinging movement with relation to the frame 12.
Describing more in detail the preferred construction of each link 27, said link is shown made up of two end portions or halves 31 which are identical in construction, being in the form of an eye bolt having a threaded portion which screws into an internally threaded sleeve 31a. By this means a link construction is provided the length of which may be regulated as desired, and at the same time a swiveled relation is established between the two eye bolts which make up each link.
At the other end of the main bed frame a leg member or rear end frame 32 is provided which is pivotally and swingably connected with the main bed frame by means of the short upper link 33 and the longer lower link 34. This construction permits the frame portion just mentioned to swing down against the main bed frame below its upper end when the parts are in the folded dotted line position of Fig. 1.
The mattress supporting portion of the bed consists of a canvas or other fabric sheet 40, the length of which is considerably more than the length of the main bed frame so that the central portion of said sheet overlies and completely covers the bed proper and the end portions 41 and 42 of said sheet may be brought around beneath the ends of the main frame as shown. The front end portion 41 of said sheet is looped around a cross rod 43 and the rear end portion is looped around a cross rod 44, the headed end portions of these rods projecting at each side of the sheet and being connected at each side of the bed by means of a strong tension spring 45.
In spaced relation to its looped front end portion the sheet is passed around the cross piece 7, and in spaced relation to its looped rear end portion said sheet passes around the turnable roller 10 already mentioned. The cross piece '7, being of an angular character, holds that end portion of the sheet substantially stationary, but the roller 10 rotates slightly when weight is applied to the upper surface or run of the fabric and thus cooperates with the springs 45 to provide a substantial but yielding mattress supporting structure.
I claim:
1. In a folding bed construction, an end frame, a main frame pivotally connected with said end frame, a side frame pivotally secured to said main frame, said side frame being positioned to aid in keeping the bed covers in place, and a link operatively connecting said side frame with said end frame whereby the swinging of said main frame to an operative position causes said side frame to assume an upright position with relation to said main frame and the reverse movement of said main frame causes said side frame to assume a folded position.
2. In a folding bed construction, an end frame, a main frame pivotally connected with said end frame, a side frame having an edge portion which is hinged to said main frame, said side frame being positioned to aid in keeping the bed covers in place, and a link operatively connecting said side frame with said end frame whereby the swinging of said main frame to an operative position causes said side frame to assume an upright position with relation to said main frame and the reverse'movernent of said main frame causes said side frame to assume a folded position, said link having end portions which are swivelly connected together.
