1 Claim.
The invention forming the 'subject matter of this application is an apparatus designed for drying and polishing wood turning, such as 5 clothes pins, dowel rods,'brooml handles and the like.
an apparatus by which wood turning can be dried and polished thoroughly and uniformly in a comparatively short time, and so as to prevent warping of the turning and improve their ap-r pearance. Y

'As shown in the drawings,lthe apparatuscomprises a large cylindrical drum 1, having supporting tracks 2 and 3 suitably secured thereto to ride on supporting rollers 4 and 5 which are suitably journaled in bearings' 6 and 7, respectively, spaced apart on a supporting rail 8. Any desired number of these tracks and bearing rollers may be employed tosupport thefdrum rotatably upon a floor or platform 9. Two of these roller bearing constructions are illustrated in Figure 1.
One end of the drum has a ring gear suitably secured thereto; and this gear 'meshes with a pinion 11 which is xed to a shaft 12 journaled in bearings 13 and 14 at the upper ends of standards 15 and 16, respectively. The hot air pipe 24 is cylindrical Vand has its-60 axis coaxial with that ofthe drum 1. The pipe 24 is provided with a series of slots 26 extending lengthwise thereof and spaced apart. About midway of the pipe 24 a stop plate 27, (see Figure 3). is xed'to block the passage of dryfhot 65 -v air throughout the length of the pipe 24. This plate 27 is provided with an annular flange 28 by meansof which the plate 27 may be secured, as by set screws 29 and 30 in any desired position l of adjustment lengthwise of the pipe 24. F
The outside of the pipe 24 has a large disc 31 secured thereto and about in radial alignment with the stop plate` 27 on the inside of the pipe 24. The outer periphery of the disc 31 extends about half way between the outer periphery of.75 the pipe 24 and the inner periphery of the drum l. Any suitable means may be employed to securer the disc 31 in position perpendicular to the pipe 24. As shownin the drawings, this securing meansV comprises a comparatively large hollow 80 washer 32 which may be fixed in any desired position of adjustment on the pipe 24 by means of the set screws 33 and 34 (see Figure 4).
With short drums the roller bearings for the drum maybe omitted and the pipe 24 may be-85 extended through the hub 35 of the spider 25, and this hub may be used as a trunnionjournaled in a bearing 36 whichV is supported by suitable standards `on abase plate 37, as shown in Figure 1. However, where the turnings are large,=`
and the drumcorrespondingly large, it is pref#V erable to use as many of the roller bearing supports as may be necessary to support the drum vrotatably throughout its length.
The turnings may be introduced into the drum f `1 from a supply hopper 38 through a door 39 suitably formed in the periphery of the drum 1; and the dry and polished turning may be discharged through the same door 39 into a discharge hopper 40 vsuitably located rat the lowerl00A part of the drum.
The stop plate 27 forms a baie for the hot dry air and forces the air out radially of the pipe- 24 Vperiphery of the drums through all the turnings which are 'rotatingabout the pipe 24. This means thatthe air on the inlet side of the disc 31 hasv its pressure built up suiciently to force the air throughout all the turnings both radially and lengthwise, and it cannot escape lengthwise of the drum Without also passing lengthwise through the turnings.
The open end of thev drum provided by the spider allows the ready escape of the saturated air. However, this end may be closed and the saturated air conducted from the end of the bearing 36 to any suitable exhaust pipe 4l.
It will be understood of course that the slots 26 are formed throughout the length of the pipe 24 and that the position of the stop plate 27 and the disc 31 Will depend upon the length of the turnings to be dried and polished.

Drying apparatus comprising an imperforate rotary drum having a head iixed to one end thereof and having an air conduit at the center of said head, means for rotating said drum, a slotted pipe supported within said drum by the ends thereof and coaxial therewith, means for forcing air through said conduit into said pipe,
