PATENT WILLIAM w. AKER; on SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR 1T0 AMEIZIGAN cA COMPA NY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.', A. CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY SHEET METAL CONTAINER 7 Application filed ma 8,1931. Serial No. 536,009.
The present invention relates to a sheet metal container and has'for its object broadly the provision of an improved container ,structure of the type wherein'an external friction 5 or slip cover is provided to close down over" the upper open end of the container.
An important object of the invention is I the provision of a container of this character, the parts of which will be so constructed and arranged that a relatively more rigid slip or frictional engagement may be pro vided between the closing snrfacesf Another important object of the invention is the provision of a container of the character vabove mentioned, the parts'of which may be so constructed and arranged as to permit,
the employment of a. gasket or sealing material into which the lowermost portions of the cover flange may seat or engage, so that the container may be sealed by-the cover independently of the tightness of fit between the inter-en gaging container and cover parts; A furtherimportant object of the inven-.
, tion is the reinforcement ofthe mouth or top of the container body for external frictional l engagement by the coverand without substantial obstruction of the opening into or month of the container body.
' Another important object of the inven-- tion is the provision of new and improved bail attaching means for a sheet-metal 0on tainer, the invention contemplating. 1n thisregard the provision of a contalner of H141 creased rigidity and stiffness at the top of its bodv and increased rigidity to the partin which the bail ends are attached. a V
A still furtherimportant object of the invention is the provision in a contain er ofthe 0 character described of animprovedconstruc tion facilitating the prying off of 'the cover from the body. 7
Numerous other objects of the invention .will beapparent as 'it" isibetterlunderstood from the following description; which, taken in connection with the accompanying draw,-
- Referring to the drawingi 1 11 by an interfolding of the flanges13 and 16 into an interior double seam;18" (Fig.3).
ing, discloses a preferr'ed embodiment there-' i ,is preferably seated in the depression embodying the improved elemfents of the I presentinvention; n a Fig. 2 is 'a view of the container'and its parts in separated position prior to assem-' bling; and g g a Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional detail of one corner of the containerisho wing its cover in containericlosing position; i I
The present invention contemplates an improved form of container whichhas substan tially a full opening that is reinforced by an annuluswhich' provides a smooth friction seatfor an'external friction closure oflthe slip cover-type and which alsoprovides' aj seat for sealing or gasket material interposed between the gasket seat and the. slip closure when the latter is in closed fxisition, certain of the closure elements being formed toipermit ready opening of the container while pro viding a se'atfora carryingbail. 7 To exemplify the'invention the drawing discloses a container bodyll toiwhich is applied a bott'om 12-secured thereto inany-suitr:
able manner as by a double-seam.: Theupper open endof the container body wall is bent 5 inwardly into a flange 13' adapted to seamed in with a friction ring annulus. Such an annulus comprises a body 15 slightly larger" than the diameterof the con tainer body 11 and'at its top is bent'inwardly to provide a horizontal flange 16,,the body 15 Y a being swelled out or enlarged in diameter into a collar 17 constituting the lower, half of the annulus body 15. This annulus is adapted to be interengaged with. the container body The upper smaller diametered part of the an- ,nulus body 15 tightly engages theupp'er end of the container bodywall 11 and provides a vertical wall section 19 the exterior part of which presents a smooth friction wall. r
This friction wall 19 is bent outwardly, ad- V jacent'its bottom edge, into acircular trough section 21 which provides an annular hollow "or depression 22, the trough section-merging into the top or. horizontal partof the collar" l 17 A suitable sealing orgasket material 23 a purpose hereinafter. described no s I The outer vertical Wall of the collar 17 is provided Witlrtivo diametrically opposed openings 2 which form bail seatsior a handle or bail :25 having inwardly ent horizontal necks 26 (Fig. 8). adjacent its ends Whiclrterinmate inright angled bends 2'4.
Which lie inside or" the collar section.
This structure provides a strong reinforced upper end for the container which may be conveniently carried by the handle Wall 11 presents very little obstruction to the dlscharge of the contents from the container thus providing a substantially full open] mouth therefor.

closure' which is adapted to be pos t oned over the open end of the contarnerwvrth its friction Wall 33 engaging'thefraction Wall 19 of the the depression 22ofthe'annulus asillustrated In this fully assembled position the container is tightlysealed both by the friction side Wall engagement and'by thezgasket joint. The outer edge 37 of the flange 36' at such timeisspaced' a slight distance abovelthe horizontal top Wall of the collar part 17 and;
this space provides an' openchannel 38 for r the insertion of a suitable-prying-ofi tool.
Such a'tool bypressing on. thecollar as a incrum base, lifts upwardly against the cover member by engagement of the flanged edge, member"upwardly and 37 forcing the coverunsealing the container. I 7 V Itis thought that the invention and many ofits attendant advantages will be understood from the foregoing description, and it wlll rbeapparent that variouschanges'may be' made in the form, construction and arrange. nientof the parts Without departing from the W spirit and soope'oi? the ir'vention or sacrificing all otits material,advantages, the form liere'inbefore described bein mere-l "a )16- 0d", inner edge in a'double seam arranged ithin thebody and having its outer part arranged outside of the -seamed part o'f-the body to fer'red embodimentfthereof.
