w. R. HoTcHKlss BLANK BOOK Filed Aug. 15, 1932 `2 Sheets-Sheet 1 4to the entries Patented July 18, 1933 UNITED STATES PATENT ol-Fl'ca wILLun n. norcmnss. or's'r. raux., mmmsora BLANK-nook .application 11u11 Angustia, 19342. Serial No. 528.657.
This invention relates to blank books of the permanently bound type wherein it lis desired to writebothI on stub o'cpermanent record portions and on the main or reniovable portions of the sheets.
In all of the old books of this type with which I am familiar the writer is' hindered to some extent in making entries on the stubs or elsewhere in the book by the necessity of holding the stubs of previously issued sheets out of the way or by other obstruction.
It is m 'object to provide a novel and improved b ank book wherein aociated portions of the leaves, such as stubs and removable portions, are both readily accessible and unobstructed for writing when the book is opened at any point therein.
A further object is to provide an unusually inexpensive, permanently bound book, suitable for use as a check book, and having the advantages above pointed out.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, wherein the invention is illustrated as applied to a check book; Y
Figure 1 is a plan view of the book in open position;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged side view with the leaves closed and showing the binding; L
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary, enlarged plan view of the book in open position and Fig. 4 is a section taken on lthe line 4-4 of Fig. 3. 1
The book is formed from a multiplicity of sheets, each folded along a line'5 to produce a stub or permanent record portion 6- and a main or removable portion 7 at op osite sides res ctively of the line 5. "Fhe rtions 6 an 7 have printed on their inner aces suitable lines and legends as a guide to be written thereon. Extending parallelto the fold lines 5 and on the outer faces of each fold (viz., on the side j reverse to the printing) are narrow bands 8 of adhesive forsecurin the sheets together in a permanently boun pad orbook. The securing means are preferably spaced slightly from the fold lines 5 to permit expansion of the book in the direction of its thickness and to 'give' flexibility, permittingv ready 'in addition to check books such, for exmultiplicit opening of tliebook. To facilitate removal of the checks as they are issued the portions sheets are perforated along lines 9 extending parallel to the fold lines 5, the adhesive, bein and 5. The line. 9 of perforations defines a .narrow binding portion of the leaf having thechec'ksprmted thereon and also constitutes a second fold line to facilitate folding the checks or turnin which they are printed so at endorsements or other mattermay be conveniently written on the backs of the leaves. The backs or outer surfaces of the sheets .would'otherwise be relatively inaccessible because of the necessityvfor manual holding olf-the check portion of one sheet away from the back of the stub portion of the adjacent sheet with my type of binding. Where a lurality of checks o r other forms are provi sheet, as illustrated in Fig. 1, the several' forms maybe separated by lines of perforations 10 of the usual or suitable type.
The book may be opened at any point between the printed faces of the sheetsf by un- 75 folding, as indicated in Fig. 4, to position the permanent record portlon 6 of a' sheet directly opposite the associated .portion 7. When in this open position the top sheets lie flat and are without obstruction of any/ kind an to writin on either fold. It will be evident that. uno structed writin surfaces remainy even after a number of t e removable portions of thelsheets have been withdrawn from the book. Y i
-If desired,V stiff covers and additional binding at the back o f thebookv may be furnished without interfering with the operation \of the device.v Obvlousl the device may be used for books of, varlous kinds amcple, as stock record books, receiptbooks a s of coupons and of numerous banlnng orms. v
Having described my invention, what I -95 claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
1. A blank book having in combination a of Asheets each folded upon itself and located between said lines 9 i6 the leaves on ed on each aving narrow bands of adhesive Abook multiplicity of superimp securing said folded sheets together on their outer surfaces and along lines parallel to and spaced from the fold lines, the portions of the -sheets closel adjacent to. the fold linesbeing .free'for imited separation from l each other.
2. A blank book having in combination a multiplicity of sheets each folded upon itself and means for securing said folded sheets together adjacent to the fold lines to form a wherein the several folded sheets may be unfolded to simultaneously present the inner faces of both folds for writing and one of the folds of each sheet havin a line of perforations parallel to the fold line and closely adjacent to said securing meansv to form a second fold line. y
3. A blank book having in combination a osed and separately folde sheets, each havmg on the inner face of one fold a permanent record portion and on the inner face of the other lfo d a removable portion associated with said record porto present a. flat tion and a narrow band of adhesive extend-A ing "along the fold line of each sheet for securing said folded sheets together ad'a fold lines and the 'remova le cent to the portion of each sheet havin ing along the exterior surface, adjacent to the fold line, for binding the sheets together and one leaf of each sheet havin a line of perforations spaced from the old line beyond said band of adhesive and deinin a narrow binding portion and a second fol line along whic said leaf may be folded writingl surface on the outer surface of the sheet.
