Description

July 18, 1933. M. MARSACK MATTRESS CONSTRUCTION Filed NOV. 5, 1928 Patented July 1e,v 1933,
` "MATTRESS oorrs'riw'erroivf` Appiiati'o' mea-November 5, 192s;` -seriai'Na 317,3213" Myfinvention relates tomattresses and particularly toa mattressconstruction in'which there is employed an inner Vspring construction. The inventionv has among its objects the vproduction of a mattress; of the-kind de# scribed which vis comfortable, durable, attractive in appearance, elicientand satisfactory. The samelhas particularly among its objects anl improved mattress construction whereby the. mattress will retain its Voriginal-shape and attractive appearance after continued use without in any way impairing its comfort qualities. Ithasas a further object the production of an improved mattress providedfwith an inner spring construction in which there is unrestricted full play and action of the springs. It-has as a further object the production of a mattress provided l Ul With a quilted-side boxing, the mattress being so constructed that flexing and buckling of the side boxing is slight when the mattress is occupied, and in which the boxing is retrieved and remains `substantially taut with" the total elimination of buckling when the mattress is not occupied.
Many other objects and advantages of the Y construction herein shown and described will be obvious to those skilled in the art from the disclosure herein given. j
To this end my invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and combination ofparts herein shown and described, and more particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawing, wherein like reference characters indicate like or corresponding p parts: l v j .1
Fig. 1 is a top elevation Aofa portionv of a mattress; Y
F ig.r2 is a side 4elevation of thesame;
ig. 3 is a sectionalview taken substantially on line 3 3 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a sectional view'of a modification; f
Fig. 5 is a sectional r view taken substantially on line 5 5 of Fig.` 2;
Fig. 6 is a view in elevation of` a portion of the flap 9; and i 1 Fig. 7 is a view in elevation of a modified 5 form of the flap 9.
v together,
" j l Referring to the drawing, two embodiments of the invention4 are shown, anflnner sp'rmgconstruction fis arranged'in fa coveringf2,`it being understood, however, l struction zdesired4 may be "el'nployed Vfor the purpose.l Over theopposite faces yof :the springconstruction are arranged fillings 3 and covering sheets 4 ofzticking or the 1 like', the saine being of a size so that its eohges ex-y tend beyond lthe edges of the *.springcon-A struction. rAbout themedge"` of the mattress Y between` the cover sheets'4 isi arranged,-` an edge `boxing which `consists ,offy theinner ply 5, outer plyg andfilling 7, the-fboxing being quilted by "ineansofeyelets 8 or the"l like=sei curing the inner and outer plies and filling cured t0 llPsQ Vwhich are secured orcsewed to the coverings 4 as indicated attlO. It is preferred to make the Afiaps 9With the cutout yportions 11 so that the same is more or less'scalloped, theportions 12- being secured to the edges ofthe inner ply. -V The filling can thus extend through so that it is continuous. f
The edge portions 13 of the coveil sheets 4 are secured to Vthe edge portions14 ofthe outer through the filling and the adjacent edge portions 13 and 14 form edge rolls 17 extending about the mattress.l The mattress :may be tufted as indicated at 18 by means ofl cords or 'ties extending through the same.
g .or boxing 21.
Qn the opposed faces ofthe sprlng construc-l t1on is arrangedfthe filling 23 and overthis the cover sheets'24. The side boxingcon#` sistsfof thejinner ply 25, outer ply 26.v and lling27, `the inner, and outer plies and lilling being securedi or fied construction the lcured directly to the spring cover or boxing 21 through the flaps 29 corresponding to the :inh only i illustrated con-` n sisting.y of= thedesired number of` springs 1 sothat the same is of` substantial body.V rlhe edges ofthe inner ply 5 are se-V ply by'rstitching or bindingthe sameV v at their juncture 15. Stitcheslextending Y quilted together by the- Veyelets 28 `or the equivalent. `h this modi- I cover sheets 24 arose# flaps 9v shown in Fig. 3. These aresewed or filling forming the roll edges.
stitched to the covering as indicated at 3() and to-the spring construction cover as indicated Vat 3l. Theedges of the cover sheet and the edges of the outer ply 26 are stitched or bound together at theirvjuncture as indicated vat 33, the` roll edge stitches Sli-extending through'the outer ply cover sheet and It is preferred that the stitches 34 be extended through the edges 35 of the inner ply 25 of'the'sid-e boxing, thereby preventing of the same from -Wrinkling down andat the same time it` re`- tains the boxing in order. The usual tufting vthe flap 9. n
38 or thei equivalent may be employed.
A In theconstruction shown it may be noted that the iiap 9 forms substantially a plurality of straps.
Where straps The'flap 9 corresponds to the flap 9 Withoutjthe scallops.y The strapslQ may be fastened to the flapy 9 Vby stitching and, if desired, may be alternately fastened on opposite faces of theap, 'as shown, 0r they may all be positioned on lone side of the flap. Obviously with either of these con-V structions .when the mattress is occupied the tendencyof the load on the vmattressis to maintain the sidey boxing vWithout buckling, there being a pull ortension onthesame. The eyelets serve as vents-through vvliichair esv p Obviously individual strapsmay 1 be formed, for example,'as indicated in Figf? 12k are shown as'fastened tov hence l do not Wish to be understood as limiting myself to the exact form, construction, arrangement and combination of parts herein shown and described o1' uses mentioned.
`That I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent. is: A mattress or the like spring construction including a plurality of verticallyarranged coil springs; a layer of cover padding ony "the top yof the spring construction; .a coversheet over said padding carrying an auxiliary strip attached by one edge adjacent the edge of the cover sheet, said cover sheet having its edge attached to the edge of the box-like spring construction; side paddinglat thev sides of the box-like spring construction extending upwardly into so that they not only have utility buty like, including;akvbox-v the space between` the Aedge of the cover sheet and therauxiliar .stri 3 over the side padding, the edge" ofthe` side Wall'sheet beingy attached to the free edge' y of the Vauxiliary strip.
