LAMP-BURNER.
No. 191,830. Patented J une12,1877- agggw .AW /W M N.PETER8,. PHOTO-LITMGRAPHER. WASHINGTON. D C,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIcE JAMES GAIN, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN LAMP-BURNERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 191,830, dated J une 12, 1877 application filed May 21, 1877.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, JAMES GAIN, of Pittsburg, county of Allegheny, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lamp-Burner, of which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a side view of my improved lampburner; and Fig. 2 a side elevation of the same in open position, showing split wick-tube and ratchets.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre sponding parts.
This invention is intended to furnish an improved lamp-burner, into which a new wick is inserted with great facility, and which is easily kept clean of gum and burnt wick, the ratchets being also readily reached and kept in order; and the invention consists of a lampburner split diametrically and lengthwise through the wick tube into two sections, which are hinged and locked together, and have fixed or removable ratchets.
In the drawing, A and B represent the sections of my improved lamp-burner, which are obtained by dividing the burner diametrically and lengthwise through the wicktube 0, so that the latter is split open entirely throughout its entire length.- The burner-sections A B are hinged together at one side, at a, to be readily opened forthe convenient insertion of the 'wick, which is placed in position into one section of the wick-tube, the burner section being then closed and locked by alatch, springcatch, or other device, I), at the opposite side. Besides the ease of inserting the wick, keeping the wick'tube clean, &c., the ratchets that move the wick up and down are readily kept in order and repaired, they being also made removable, if desired, by placing the shaft of the sameinto inclined slotted bearings of the burnersection B, and cutting out that part of the wick-tube between the ratchets, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2.
The wick-tube sections may be provided with one or more corrugations for the escape of gas, and better combustion, which is, in this case, not objectionable, as the corrugations are easily cleaned on opening the burner. The displacement of the raichets admits the convenient repairing and replacing of the same, and avoids the frequent annoyance arising from faulty ratchets in otherwise good burners.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A lamp burner formed of two hinged sections, which are split diametrically and longitudinally through the wick-tube, substantially in the manner described, and for the purpose specified.
2. A lamp-burner made of two hinged sections of equal size, each having a section of the wick-tube which is split through its entire length, as d scribed.
3. A lamp-burner made of two sections, be-
in g split diametrically and lengthwise through the wick-tube, and with fixed or removable ratchets, and hinged at one side and locked at the opposite side, substantially in the man ner described, and for the purpose specified.
