My invention relates to a means for use specifically in connection with garbage or otherrefuse cans in preventing contact of the garbage deposited therein with the inside thereof. g l I v The chief object of this invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive and practical device which may be conveniently inserted in a garbage receptacle and line the inside thereof, whereby the'garbage deposited therein will not befoul the can. . Otherobjects are to provide a liner for garbage pails which constitute substantially a bag or container for the garbage and which may be conveniently dumped from the pails;

to provide a liner by which the temporary storage of the garbage therein will not render putrid and unsanitary the garbage pails and to provide a liner which is expansible diametrically to lit a variety of size of pails into which it is arranged to be insert-ed.

A form of practical embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. 1 is an elevational view showing my invention.

My invention consists of a liner of flexible material so fashioned that it may conveniently fit within a garbage pail and constitute substantially a bag or container for the garbage which presses the bag or container into which it is placed and prevents contact of the garbage with the receptacle; the liner being provided with tapering extensions that are arranged to be folded outwardly over the the top of the liner or bag when it is filled and ready for removal and the liner or bag being provided with lateral folds that are unfoldable to accommodate the liner to the diameter of the pail into, which it is to be placed/ .In a more specific sense, my invention is shown as comprising'a bag or'receptacle 1 that forms a liner and that is made preferably of a. single piece 2 of material, Fig. 3; the material preferably possessing qualities for resisting theattack of decomposing or disintegrating fluids contained in garbage. For this purpose there areavailable a number of fiber materials, such as paraiiin paper, oiled paper and others, it beingnecessary only that these papers be reasonably resistant to attack and waterproof or substantially so.

The liner or container 1 is closed at the bottom, as shown at 3 and open at the top, the top of the liner being provided with a plurality of tapering extensions 4: which as shown in Fig. i are arranged to be folded outwardly over the edge of the pail or receptacle 5 in which it is placed and to be held thereon by the lid 6, and inwardly over the top of the liner or container to form a cover therefor when filled with garbage; this provision being convenient to. close the package and prevent the dispersion of objectionable odors, when collection of the package is-made.

. The liner is also provided with lateral folds 7, the greatest height of the innermost 'fold 7 determining or conforming to the height 0 of the pail or being in excess thereof. These lateral folds are unfoldable if desired to ac commodate the liner or container to pails in which the diameters vary and they also provide sufficient flexibility for adapting the, liner readily and without danger of tearing to the contours of garbage pails.

Referring to Fig. 3 it will be observed that the single blank 8 from which the liner is made is a square, that is folded or creased v99 along its median lines 9 in two directions at right angles to each other. Each corner 10' of the folded blank 8 is rolled at an angle to the edges of the blank. the extent of the roll determining the height of the liner. .9 l Vhen the corners are rolled as stated, the liner or bag 1 results, the adjacent free edges or corners l1 opposite the folded corners 10 then representing the sides of the liner 1, which. are substantially vertical and plane 0 and terminate in the upstanding tapering extensions 4, referred to.

The liner as described herein, being formed of a single square of material is without a joint and free of the need of paste or other conjoining means, and hence is strong, durable and eflicient, with no lines of weakness to render its integrality susceptible to destruction even where the contents of the liner are extremely moist or wet. v

When the liner has been filled, the tapering extensions are either folded over or twisted together to conceal the contents. The package thus made is neat in appearance and sanitary and does away with the unsanitary and disagreeable practice of lining garbage cans with newspapers which absorb the putridity of garbage and readily becoming soggy, do not preserve the garbage can against foulness. I have hereinbefore referred to the liner of my invention in connection with pails for garbage, but it will be understoodthat no limitation is intended by this reference and that the liner may be used with any receptacle whether for refuse or food.

What I claim, is:

1. The method of forming a container for receptacles, which consists in taking a square corners whereby the square blank assumes a container apperance expansible at said rolled corners, said container when so formed providing substantially upstanding tapering extensions, than folding said extensions downwardly along the sides of the container.

8. A liner for receptacles including a container formed from a single piece of waterproof materiah'said single piece being substantially square in form and creased at right angles along median lines, said single piece being partially rolled in the zone of each crease to provide a liner having four sides.
