C. A. ROWLEY VEGETABLE SHREDDER Filed 001;. 1, 1951 L LX X HTIUHNEYS.
Patented June 27, 1933 UNITED stares ATENT OFFICE cnannns A. ROWLEY, on Los ANGELES, CALIFORNIA VEGETABLE Application filed'bctober 1,
This invention relates to improvements in vegetable shredders.
An object of the invention is to provide an improved vegetable shredder having a shredding plate so formed andso designed that in moving vegetable thereover the vegetable may be shredded in acoarse manner or in a fine manner, as desired. The improved vegetable shredder consists of a plate having two areas, one of which has relatively wide shredding edges provided thereon and the other of which has relatively small shredding edges provided thereon. These areas are arranged sideby side and one set of shredding edges is directed inone direction while the other set of shredding edges is directed in the opposite direction. The object of having the improved vegetable shredder so designed is thatif one area is being used to shred the vegetable in a desired manner and the'vegetable happens to traverse the other area by accident it will notbe cut by the oppositely directedshredding edges formed thereon. y I
Another object of the invention is tocombine with a vegetable shredder having the above mentioned characteristics. a slicing blade which traverses both areas but whichis so arranged that when eitherof the areasare being used the slicing blade will not be encountered by the vegetable.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will be made manifest in the following detailed description, and specifically pointed out in the appended claims, reference is had to the accompanying drawing for an illustrative embodiment of the invention, wherein: Fig. 1 is a view in elevation of the improved vegetable shredder.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken substantially upon the line 22 upon Figure 1.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken substan-. Y tially upon theline 33 upon Figure 1. Fig. 1 is a sectional view taken substantially upon the line 4- 1 upon Figure 1.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, wherein similar reference characters designate similar parts throughout, the improved vegetable'shredder consists of a more or less areas 13 and 1 1 arran are formed smaller per jacent these perforati '20 similar which are the plane of the shre rang 'versely by turning the shredder sHnEnnn-n 1931. Serial No. 566,281.
rectangular heavy wire frame 10, the sides of which are slightly indented as indicated at 11 intermediate their ends. A shredding plate 12 formed of sheet metal is applied to the frame in any suitable manner, however, I prefer to curl or wrap the edges of the 'shredding plate around the sides of the frame at the indentations 11, as clearly illustrated in Figure 4. The shredding plate may be considered as having been divided into two ged side by side and these areas may be defined from each other by a slightly embossed bead 15. The area 13 has a series of relatively large circular perforations 1.6 formed therein and adjacent these perforations there areportions 17 bent forwardly out of the plane of the shredder plate providing shredding edges 18. The portions 17 are beneath their respective perforations so that the shredding edges 18 will be directed upwardly. On the area 14: there forations 19 and adons there are portions to but smaller than portions 17 bent forwardly out of the plane of the shredder plate and which provide small shredding edges 21. The portions 20 are located above their respective perforations so that the shredding edges 21 are directed downwardly. At about the center of the shredder plate a relatively long continuous portion 22 is bent rearwardly out of dder plate, providing a relatively long continuous straight slicing edge. This slicing edge is preferably ared" atan angle to the length of the shredder plate.
Theoperation and advantages of the improved vegetable shredder are as follows. When it is desired to shred vegetables coarsely, the vegetable may be moved downwardly over the area 13. As it encounters the shredding edges it is divided into relatively coarse shreds which pass rearwardlv through the perforations 16. If by accident or otherwise a portion of the vegetable traverses part of area 1 1 during this movement, it merely slides over portions 20 without being shredded thereon or mutilated in any way. Conplate and frame upside down, the vegetable may be shredded into fine shreds by moving the vegetable downwardly on this area, causing it to be shredded by the small shredding edges 21. If by accident or otherwise the vegetable should extend over onto area 13 during this movement, it will not be shredded by the shredding edges 18 but will merely slide or pass thereover. Regardless of which area 13 or 14 is employed, the vegetable will merely pass over the opening adjacent the rearwardly bent portion 22 without being cut or mutilated. When it is desired to use the slicer or sliding edge 22, the reverse side of the shredder plate is used and by passing a vegetable downwardly thereover it will be sliced by the edge without being out or mutilated by the presence of the perforations or forwardly bent portions in the plate.
From the above described construction it will be appreciated that the improved vegetable shredder is so designed that a single shredder plate will shred a vegetable into coarse shreds, be, or it may be used to effectively slice.
Various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention as defined by the appended claims.
I claim:
1. Avegetable shredder comprising a shredder plate having relatively large perforations adjacent one side edge of the plate and relatively small perforations adjacent the other side edge of the plate, there being relatively large portions bent forwardly out of the plane of the plate adjacent the large perforations providing shredding edges, and similar but smaller portions bent forwardly out of the plane of the plate adjacent the smaller perforations providing small shredding edges, the larger portions being arranged adjacent the lower side edges of their respective perforations and the smaller poror fine shreds, as the case may tions being arranged adjacent the upper sides of their respective perforations whereby a vegetable may be shredded on the large shredding edges without being cut by the small shredding edges and upon turning the plate upside down a vegetable may be shredded on the small shredding edges without being shredded by the large shredding edges in the event that it partially passes thereover.
2. A vegetable shredder comprising a shredder plate having two areas side by side, one area having large shredding edges directed in one direction and the other area having small shredding edges directed in the opposite direction whereby a vegetable may be shredded on the large shredding edges Without being cut by the small shredding edges in the event that it passes thereover and upon turning the plate upside down a vegetable may be shredded on the small shredding edges without being shredded by the large shredding edges in the event that it passes thereover. v
3. A vegetable shredder comprising a shredder plate having two areas side by side, one area having large shredding edges directed in one direction and the other area. having small shredding edges directed in the opposite direction wherebv a vegetable may be shredded on the largeshredding edges without being cut by the small shredding edges in the event thatit passes thereover and upon turning the plateupside down a vegetable may be shredded on the small shredding edges without being shredded by the large shredding edges in the event that it passes there over, there being a portion traversing both areas bent rearwardly from the plane of the plate to provide a slicing edge whereby on shredding a vegetable over either area it will I not be cut by the slicing edge. In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
