The use of gold pen points, however, is expensive and has increased the price of fountain pens and the like considerably.
In View of the high cost of gold pen points and the short life of ordinary metal v pen points, which become corroded due to the effects of writing fluid, it has become desirable to provide improved pen points which will be non-corrosive and can be plat ed with a non-corrosive finishing metal to produce a pen point which Will have the qualities of the expensive gold pen point but which can be manufactured at substantially less cost than the gold pen point, thereby permitting pen manufacturers to produce fountain pens and the like at a sub stantial saving in cost Without sacrificing any of the features of the expensive fountain pen having gold pen points and trimmings.
This invention pertains to pen points and more particularly to pen points which are constructed of a non-corrosive hard metal alloy plated with a non-corrosive finishing metal to provide a pen point having all the desirable qualities of a gold pen point but being adapted to be produced at a substantial saving in cost.
It is an object of this invention to construct a pen point out of Monel metal plated with a non-corrosive finishing metal such as chromium or the like.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a perspective view of a pen point incorporating my invention.
Figure 2 is a vertical cross-section of the pen point shown in Figure 1.
The present inventioncovers a metal pen point designated on the drawing by numeral 1 which may be of any desired shape or type, which is constructed of Monel metal designated by numeral 2 which is an alloy of nickel and copper, with small amounts of iron and manganese and sometimes including silicon. Monel metal commonly in use contains about 28% of copper, 67% of nickel and about 5% of iron and manganese.
The improved pen point which is constructed of Monel metal is finished by plating the same with chromium designated by numeral 3, which gives the pen point a high- 1y polished and attractive finish which is non-corrosive and therefore will not be affected when subjectedto the effects of ink or writing fluid. The pen point constructed of Monel metal plated with chromium produces a pen point having an attractive silver or white metal finish which may be used in a fountain pen having the barrel and cap trimmed with chromium plated Monel metal decorative rings or end caps. to produce an attractive and inexpensive type of fountain pen having all the qualities and the attractive features of a fountain pen equipped. with a gold pen point and gold trimmings.
While the improved Monel metal pen point .has been described as being plated with chromium, it will of course be understood that the pen point may be plated with other non-corrosive metal coverings to provide a desired finish to the pen point. It is accordingly not the purpose to limit the patent granted hereon otherwise than necessi tated by the scope of the appended claims.
I claim as my. invention:
1. A pen point constructed of Monel metal I plated with chromium. 2. A pen point constructed of an alloy at least 65% of nickel, at least 25% copper,
iron and manganese plated with chromium.
3. A pen point constructed of a nickel and copper alloy of at least 65% nickel, and containing a trace of silicon plated with chromium.
4:- A pen point constructed of an alloy comprising about 28% copper, 67% nickel and 5% of iron and manganese, said pen point being plated with chromium.
