My invention relates to improvements in ironing boards, and it consists in the combinations, constructions, and arrangements herein described and claimed.

' The main object of my invention is to provide an ironing board, the outer end of which is entirely free in order that shirts, skirts, and the like may be placed around the board and ironed without the necessity for raising the board.

Another object is to provide an ironing board of the class described which will be supported in a manner preventing undue vibration. A further object of my invention is to provide a shear leg for the board which acts as a clamp for holding the board to a table or the like.

A further object is to provide a table adapted to be held by the shear leg which will be braced in such a manner as to prevent the table from being easily tilted forwardly or to either side.

77 Another object is to provide means whereby the shear leg of the ironing board may be used with tables or supports of varying height.

Another object is to provide means whereby the shear leg may be made both extensible and rigid.

A further object is to provide means whereby the table and the ironing board may be rigidly yet detachably secured together.

A further object is to provide improved I means whereby a pad and a cover may be conveniently secured to said board.

A further object is to provide an ironing board construction which is an improvement 7 upon the devices disclosed in my applications for patent on ironing boards Nos. 1,180,942

and 1,208,643.

A further object is to provide an ironing board and table therefor which are simple in construction, rigid in use, highly practical,

and quite inexpensive.

In carrying out my invention I make use of atable top 1 carried by vertical bars 2 which may be reinforced by cross bars 3 and adjustable in the slotted end members 4' of a stand 5, a rod 6 being used in a plurality of perforations 7 in the bars 2 whereby the table 1 may be vertically adjusted. The stand may be provided with a cross bar 8 and outwardly extending leg members 9, 9a, 10, and 10a. These leg portions provide means whereby the table may be prevented from overturning easily or twisting unduly upon the floor when the ironing board is being used. The leg portions 10 and 10a may extend for some distance in :tront of the stand.

The stand 5 may also be provided with ladder steps 11 and 11a for the purpose of enabling the table 12 to serve as a short ladder when it is being used by itself.

In carrying out my invention I also provide an ironing board 13, the inner end of which is cut out to form a slot 14 to permit the passage of a shear leg 15 pivoted at 15 to depending side plates 16 secured to a bottom portion 17 of the board 13 as shown. The upper portion of the shear leg 15 may be provided with a transversely extending right angle groove 18 to provide a close fitting clamping jaw 19 for engagement with the table top 1. I

The table top 1 maybe provided with a combination U-shaped reinforcement, abutment, and positionin member 20 adapted to receive a supplementary member 21 and secured to the shear leg 15 at the vertical surface 22 of the groove 18. The members 20 and 21 may each be 'made of any suitable metal and may be provided with a plurality of apertures 23 adapted to receive screws 24 by which these members 20 and 21 are rigidly secured to the table top 1 and the shear leg 15. The abutment member 20 may be provided with. a rear flange 25, a bridge portion 26, and a front iange 27. The front flange 27 is provided with a centrally disposed opening 28 adapted to receive a threaded rodlike extension 29 of the supplementary member 21. The extension member 29 be provided with. a threaded. nut 30 whereby the ironing board may-be fixedly secured to the table 12 for the purpose of preventing it from being knocked loose from the table should any one stumble or fall against the ironing board. The rear flange 25 provides an abutment means'i or steadying the ironing board at its front edge 31.

Now referring to Figures 15, 16, and 17 I have provided a slightly modified form of the shear leg 15. This comprises a shear leg 15a having a plurality of elongated openings 32 which may be nrovided with metallic cylindrical. internally threaded members 33. The shear leg 15a is also provided with two extension members 34 and 3411 which are held in a slidable manner against the shear leg 15a by-a rigid metallic band 35. The extcnsion members 34 and 34a are fixedly secured to the metallic band 35 by a plurality of screws 37. The band may be provided with two threaded openings 65 and 66 adapted to receive threaded thumb screws 65a and 66a, respectively, for the purpose of securing the metal band and the extensions 34 and 34a rigidly to the shear leg 15a.

Now referring to Figures 12 to 14, inclusive, I have provided a shell construction 38 which includes a metallic Wall bracket member 39 consisting of a vertical wall engagement plate 40 and a horizontal extension plate 41 formed integral therewith and provided with a central opening 42 and a plurality of openings 42a each of which is positioned an equal distance from the opening 42. The bracket member 39 is adapted to support a shelf portion 43. This shelf portion may be made of either wood or metal and is provided on its under side with a flanged positioning and bracing member The member 44 is similar to the abutment member 20 except that the bridge portion 36 p is provided with'an extension 45 which may extend to the rear edge 46 of the shelf 43. The member 44 may be secured to the under side of the shelf 43 in any suitable manner such as for instance by screws 4?.- At the rear end of the extension 45 I have provided. two downwardly extending externally threaded rods 48 which are adapted to project through the openings 42 and any one of the openings 42a. The rods 48 may be integral with the extension 45 and may be provided with a plurality of bolts 49 for the purpose of securing the shelf 43 to the bracket member 39 substantially as shown in Figure 12.

Near the longitudinal edge of the under side of the ironing board I have provided a plurality of angular hook members '50 provided with internally extending portions 51. The board engagement portion 52 of the hook members 570 may be adapted to be driven into the board or threadedly secured thereto. Near the opposite longitudinal edge of the board I have provided oppositely disposed screw members 53. The outer portion ofthe screw members 53 may be threaded while the board engagement portion 54 may be tapered and adapted to be screwed into the board substantially as shown in Figure 11. The threads on the engagement. portion 54 may be dispensed with, if desired, and the member 53 may be driven into the board as is a nail or tack. The member 53 may also be provided with an internally threaded tapered nut 55. The nut 55 may, if desired, be provided with wing portions 55a adapted to clampingly secure metal eyelet members 56 substantially as shown in Figures 10 and 11. Theironing board may be provided with a pad 57. The pad 57 may be provided with a plurality of transversely disposed fabric strips 58. The strips 58 may be secured to the underside of the pad and may extend beyond the edges of the pad substantially as is shown at 59. The cover member 60 and the cover member 60 adapted to fit over the pad in a manner well known in the art. The strips 58 and the cover member 60 areeach provided with a plurality of metal eyelets 56 substantially as shownin: the accompanying drawings. It will be. observed by referring to Figure 10 that two or more or-the'se eyelets; maybe placed togetherin such a manner as to enable the pad and the cover tovbe snugly fitted to the board. It will also be observed that the employment of the strips 58 makes possible the use of a padconstructed of an.

absorbent and resilient material which would be injured by stretching. it. j Y

Now referring to Figure 11 it will be readily understood that one longitudinal edge of the pad and cover may be first placed in position over the angular engagement member 50 and that the opposite edge ofthe pad may:

It will be understood that the pad and the cover may be fitted to the particular board for which they are intended and they may be readily removed for cleansing or for repair or substitution.

I claim:

1. An ironing board construction of the class described comprising a rigidly supported board and a second board having a slot at one end, a shear leg in pivotal connection with said board and projected thereover through said slot, said shear leg presenting a clamping jaw above the slotted end of said second mentioned board to clamp the edge of said first mentioned board between itself and said second mentioned board, said clamping aw being provided with a rigidly secured outwardly extending externally threaded rod, said first mentioned board being provided on its under side with a flangedabutment and positioning member, said member being provided with a front flanged portion having an, opening therein adapted to receive said threaded rod, said flanged abutment and positioning member. being also provided with a rear flanged portion, said rear flanged portionbeing adapted to provide an abutment means against which theinner end of said second mentioned board may press, said threaded rod being provided with a bolt whereby the front flange portion may be bolted on the rod for rigidly connecting the shear leg to the rigidly supported board.

slotted endof said board being provided with a vertical plane surface and a horizontal plane surface adapted to fit snugly against the square outer edge of a table or shelf, said table and said jaw being each provided with engagement means, the engagement means of said aw being adapted to extend through the engagement means of said table and being rigidly and detachably secured thereto, said. shear leg being provided with an extension member and having a plurality of spaced openings adapted to receive a threaded bolt, said extension member including two elongated supportingmembers, said supporting members being disposed on either side of said; shearleg and being rigidly secured to eachother and slidably mounted onsaid shear leg by a metal band encircling said supporting members and said shear leg, said band being provided with a threaded opening and arbolt adapted to be threadedly securedto said opening and to said shear leg, said table being provided with a telescopic support whereby the table top 'fmaye beraisedand lowered and co-act with, said shear leg in supporting said ironing board at various levels above the base of thetable and the lowerend of the shear leg. i 3. A device of the class described comprising a table provided with outwardly extending leg portions and an ironing board provided with-a shear leg, said shear leg and said table being provided with complementary engagement and abutment members and being adaptedto be rigidly securedtogether mounted on "said shear leg by a metalbandencircling said supporting members and said shear leg, said band being provided with a threaded opening and a bolt adapted to be threadedly secured to said opening and to said shear leg, said table being provided with a telescopic support whereby the table top may be raised and lowered and co-act with said shearleg. in supporting said ironing board at various levels above the base of the table and the lower end of the shear leg.

4:. An ironing board vconstruction of the class described comprising a rigidly supported. board and a second board having a slot at one end, a shear leg in pivotal connection with said boardand projected there over through said slot, said shear leg presenting a clamping jaw above the slotted end of said second mentioned board to clamp the edge of said first mentioned board hetween itself and said second mentioned board,

said clamping jaw being provided with a rigidly secured outwardly extending externaliy threaded rod, said first mentioned board being provided on its under side with a flanged abutment and positioning member,

said member being provided with a front flanged. portion having an opening therein adapted to receive said threaded rod, said flanged abutment and positioning member being also provided with a rear flanged portion, said rear flanged portion being adapted to provide an abutment means against which the inner end of said second mentioned board may press, said shear leg being provided with an extension member and having a plurality of spaced openings adapted to receive a threaded bolt, said extension member including two elongated supporting members, said supporting members being disposed on either i side of said shear leg and being rigidly secured to each other and slidably mounted on said shear leg by a metal band encircling said supporting members and said'shear leg,

said band being provided with a threaded opening and a bolt adapted to be threadedly secured to said opening and to said shear ieg, said rigidly supported board being provided with a telescopic support whereby the rigidly supported board may be raised and lowered and coact with said shear leg in supporting said ironing board at various levels above the base of the rigidly supported board and the lower end of the shear leg.

5. An ironing board construction comprising a horizontal support having a depending apertured plate on the lower side thereof, an ironing board having a slotted end and shear leg pivotally carried on the lower side there-- of and having an end portion provided with a clampingjaw adapted to extend through said slot to engage the upper surface of said support when said slotted end of said board is moved into operative position on the opposite side of said support, and a member carried by said leg adapted to enterthe aperture of said plate to resist movement of said-board with respect to said support.

6. An ironing board'construction comprising a horizontal support having-a depending apertured plate and an abutment member on the lower side thereof, an ironingboard having a slotted end, a shear leg pivotally carried on the lower side thereof and having an end portion provided with a clamping jaw adapted to extend through said slot and engage the uppersurface of said support when said board and having a clamp end adapted to project through said slot for clamping against the upper surface of said support and complemental engaging members secured to the lower side of said support and to said leg RAY POLL.
