This invention relates to means for anchoring to wire rope attachments of various kinds, such as eyes, hooks, yokes and other elements commonly used therewith. 4
This has been done in various ways as by serving, clamping, and socketing and somewhat by loosely tting a slgeve to the rope and closing the sleeve in upon thevrope by swaging or drawing until the ,material of the sleeve flows into the rope grooves.
This latter method has proved ,satisfactory and secured a quite eilicient anchoring of the attachment when applied to ropes comprising a single layer of strands or wires laid about a core but is not efficient when applied to ropes comprising two or more layers of. strands or wires, especially when the layers are all the same lay, as it has been found that the inner layers slide longitudinally or helically resulting in material loss in the strength of the rope and attachment.
The object of overcome this objection and provide an anchorage for a wire rope attachment and method of producing it which shall effectively prevent longitudinal 'or helical sliding of the inner layers of strands or wires and develop the full strength of the rope by forcing the individual strands or wires to work in unison.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specication, there are shown by way of illustration several embodiments of the invention, and these constructions will now be described in detail and the features forming the invention will then be pointed out in the claims.

Figure 5 is a view partly in longitudinal section showing one form of the invention as applied to a three layer wire rope.
Referring to Figures 1 and. 2 of the draw- Al indicates the end of a length offtwo layer wire rope of a conventional type, shown for purposes of illustration as comprising an exterior layer of wires 1 and an interior layer of wires 2 layed about a core (not shown). As isusual in this type of attachment an attachment sleeve 3 is swaged or compressed down upon the rope A.
In accordance with the present invention, holding meansis provided for securing the inner layer or layers of strands or wires to cause such layer or layers of strands or wires to work in unison with the exterior layer.
For this purpose, as shown in Figure 1, a portion of the wires 1 is ,removed to expose the interior layer of wires 2 at the end of the rope A. A suitable metal sleeve 4 is then slipped upon the exposed portion of the interior layeryof wires 2 and swaged thereon. The attachment sleeve 3 is then slipped overq and swaged down upon the sleeve 4 and the outer layer of wires 1 to form substantially a unit therewith.
As a further method of securing a strong union between the parts, the' exteriors of both layers ofwires or strands are provided with shear lugs 5 in any suitable manner as by serrating, grooving or threading the layers of wires so that the material of the sleeves 3' and 4 Hows not only into the grooves of the l. respective layers of wires but also into the shear lugs 5 of the respective layers of wires, thus rmly and positively gripping the layers of wires or strands.
The construction shown in Figure 2 is similar to that already described in connection with Figure 1, differing therefrom only in that the exterior of the inner sleeve 4 is also provided with shear lugs 5 so that both ARCHIBALD J.' MORGAN, OF TRENTON, NEW JERSEY,

sleeves are firmly and positively locked togather.
In the modification shown in Figure 3 the holding means and attachment sleeve are combined, the single sleeve 6 being so shaped as to close down on swaging upon both the exterior and interior layers of wires 1, 2, shear lugs 5 on the exterior of the wires being utilized as an additional lock between the parts.
In the modification shown in Figure 4, the holding means for preventing longitudinal or helical sliding of the layers of wires is secured by separating the layers of wires for a portion of the rope to be secured within the attachment, coiling a suitable wire 7 about the inner layer and then relaying the outer layer 1 upon the inner layer 2. The attachment sleeve 8 is then slipped upon the rope and swaged thereon sufliciently to cause the coiled wire 7 to indent the exterior of the wires 2 and the interior of the wires 1, thus effectively preventing relative movement between the two layers of wires. The eXter-,
ior wires 1 are provided with shear lugs 5 formed by threading as in the other constructions shown, but may be formed by a vwire coiled about the rope between the rope and sleeve if desired.
Figure 5 shows one form of the invention as applied to a three layer wire rope. This follows closely the form shown in Figures 1 and 2 in that a sleeve is provided for each of the layers of the rope. The rope A comprises layers of wires or strands 10, 11 and 12, upon which are respectively swaged sleeves 13, 14 and 15, the sleeve 14 also being swaged upon the sleeve 13, and the attach- 'ment sleeve 15 upon the sleeve 14. `The exshown by way of illustration as many modifications may be made therein within the invention as defined by the claims. It will be understood, also, that the term shear lugs herein is intended to cover one or more shear lugs, as in some cases only a single shear lug may be used.
What is claimed is:
1. The method of securing attachments to wire ropes comprising two layers of strands or wires laid about a core which consists in baring the inner layer of strands or wires for a portion of the attachment, applying a sleeve to the bared portion of said layer, compressing the sleeve to cause the material thereof to flow in to the grooves of said rope layer, enclosing the rope and said sleeve in an attachment sleeve, and compressing the attachment sleeve down upon the rope and said first mentioned sleeve to cause the material thereof to flow into the grooves of the rope and force the layers of wires or strands to work in' unison in sustaining strain on the attachment.
2. The method of securing attachments to wire ropes comprising two layers of strands or wires laid about a core which consists in baring the inner layer of strands or wires for a portion of the attachment, forming shear lugs on the bared portion of said layer, applying a sleeve to the bared portion of said layer, compressing the sleeve to cause the material thereof to flow in to the shear lugs and grooves of said rope layer, forming shear lugs on the exterior layer of strands or wires, enclosing the rope and said sleeve in an attachment sleeve, and compressing the attachment sleeve down upon the rope and said first mentioned sleeve to cause the material thereof to flow into the grooves of the rope and force the layers of wires or strands to work in unison in sustaining strain on the attachment.
3. The method ofsecuring attachments to wire ropes comprising two layers of strands or wires laid about a core which consists in baring the inner layer of strands or wires for a portion of the attachment, forming shear lugs on the bared portion of said layer, applying a sleeve to the bared portion of said layer, compressing the sleeve to cause the material thereof to flow in to the shear lugs and grooves of said rope layer, forming shear lugs on the exterior layer of strands or wires and said sleeve, enclosing the rope and said sleeve in an attachment sleeve, and compressing the attachment sleeve down upon the rope and said first mentioned sleeve to cause the material thereof to flow into the rope grooves and force the layers of wires or strands to work in unison in sustaining strain on the attachment.
4. The method of securing attachments to multi-layer wire ropes which comprises baring each layer of strands or wires for a portion of the attachment, forming shear lugs on each layer of strands or wires, applying a sleeve to the bared portions of each layer of strands or wires and compressing the first sleeve down upon its layer of strands or wires and each succeeding sleeve upon its layer of strands or wires and the sleeve of the preceding layer of strands or wires, and finally applying and compressing an attachment sleeve down upon the exterior layer of strands or wires and the sleeve of the preceding layer to cause the'material thereof to flow into the rope grooves and force the sleeve enclosn -an inner layer of strands ,1.
