This invention relates to valve grinding mechanisms and more particularly to a valve grinding machine for internal combustion engines.
An object of this invention. is to provide a mechanism which can be readily and easily mounted on conventional engine blocks, the mechanism including means for partially rtating the valves on the valve seats.
Another object of this invention is to provide a relatively simple valve grinding mechanism which will grind all of the valves of the engine or motor at one time, the mechanism being such as to receive its power from any desired power member. a w
The above and various other objects and advantages of this invention will in part be described in, and in part be understood from the following detail description of the present preferred embodiment, the same being illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein Figure 1 is a detailend elevation of a device constructed according to the preferred embodiment of this invention, showing the device mounted on a head of a motor whichis shown in fragmentary form;

Referring to the drawings wherein like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the severalviews, the numeral 10 designates generally the head or block of a motor or engine of the internal combustion type -which is provided with a plurality of valve members 11, having a valve head 12, which is adapted to seat on a'valve seat 13, provided in the head or block 10.
In order to provide means by which the Y valve heads 12 may be properly seated on the seats 13, I have provided a frame structure generally designated as 14, which is provided with depending leg members 16 for support- The leg members '16 have set screws or securing members 17 threadably disposed therethrough for engagement with the head or block 10 so as to fixedly secure the frame 14 in the desired position overlying the top of the engine block 10. The frame structure 14 comprises parallel side members 18 and end members 19 and 20. 'The side members 18 are provided witha longitudinally disposed channel 21 for slidably receiving a slide member 22'which is movable longitudinally of the side frame members 18.
These side frame members 18 constitute guide members disposed upwardly from the. engine block 10 for slidably receiving the slide members 22, the purpose for which will be hereinafter described.
An outstanding arm 23 is formed with the end member 19 and. gear members 24 of the beveled type are rotatably carried by the opposite sides of the arm 23, and these gear members 24 are rotatably mounted in opposed relation, one to another. A connecting link 25 is mounted at one end on a trunnion or pin 26 carried by one slide 22 and the opposite end of the link 25 is mounted on a trunnion or pin 27 outstanding from the outer face of 8 one of the gear members 24. The other of the gear members 24 is provided with a similar connecting link 25 and is adapted for reciprocatorymovement reversely from the other link members. In this manner, while one of the slides 14 is moving in one direction within its guide 18, the other slide is moving in the opposite direction. 7 A'driven gear 28 which is provided at the lower surface thereof with a beveled gear 29 meshes with each of the gears 24 and is provided at the upper face thereof with beveled teeth 30 which mesh with a driving gear 31. v This driven gear 28 is rotatably mounted on a shaft 32 and a casing 33 is mounted on the upper end of this shaft 32 and is provided with a shaft 34 on which the gear 31 is fixedly secured. A pulley 35 is mounted on the outer end of the shaft 34 and may be coupled up 100 with any desired power supply for rotating the driving shaft 34.
Each slide 22 is provided with a plurality of inwardly extending lugs 36 which are slotted as at 37, so as to rockablyreceive a horizontally swingable or rockable arm 38. This arm 38 has a reduced outer end portion 39 which engages in the slot 37 and a pin or securing member 40 extends through the lug 36 so as to rockably secure the arm 38 on the lug 36. These lugs 36 are longitudinally spaced on the inner face of the slide 22, the space between each lug being substantially the distance apart of each of the valve members 11. I
An elongated bar or connecting member 41 is connected to the inner end of each arm 38 by means of apin or securing member 42 and is adapted to maintain the series of arms 38 in parallel relation to each other while permitting horizontal rocking movement thereof.
The end member 20 is provided with an outstanding lug 43 on which a link 44 is swing-- ably mounted, one end of the link 44 being connected to one end of the slide 22 and the other end of the link 44 being connected to one end of the connecting bar 41. In this manner, as the slide 22 is oscillated or reciprocated in the guide 18 the connecting member 41 is moved in the opposite direction. The other end of the connecting bar 41 is connected to the opposite end '19 by means of a contractile spring 45, so that the connecting link 41 may have relative longitudinal and lateral movement with respect to the slides 22.
A valve turning or twisting member generally designated as 46, whichcomprises an elongated shaft 47 having an enlarged lower end portion 48 is slidably mounted in the arm 38. The shaft or stem 47 is preferably round and a spring 49 is disposed about the stem 47 below the arm 38, one end of the spring 49 being secured to the lower end of the stem 47, while the other end of the spring is extended upwardly through the arm 38 and is attached thereto.
The spring 49 is adapted to constantly urge the valve operating'member 46 upwardly. A lug 50 is secured to the stem 47 intermediate the ends thereof and loosely engages in a slot or groove 51 provided in the arm 38 so that the valve operating member 46 will 53 which are conventional in valve head constructions 12. The valve operating members 46 are provided with a head 54 which is adapted to be engaged by a valve depressing member 55 which is swingably mounted in outstanding lugs 56 carried by a longitudinally extending bar 57.
This bar 57 is pivoted as at 58, to an upstanding post 59 and the free end of this bar 57 is constantly urged upwardly by means of a spring 60 which is secured at one end to a lug 61, carried by the end member 20 and the opposite end of the spring 60 is secured to the pivoted end of the bar 57 outwardly of the pivot 58.
The depressing members 55 are so mounted that when the bar 57 is in substantially horizontal position, each of the depressers 57 will overlie a valve operating or turning member 46. In order to apply the desired pressure to the depressing members 55, I have provided a pressure lever 62 which is pivotally secured to the frame 14 and is provided with a recess or notched portion 63 within which the bar 57 is engaged.
The free end of the pressure lever 62 is adapted to be manually operated, so that while the valve turning or operating members 46 are being mechanically operated so as to give the desired turning movement to the valve heads 12, the valve turning members are likewise pressed downwardly manually so as to provide the desired pressure on the valve heads 12, when the heads are partially rotated. 1
The side frame members 18 are provided intermediate the ends thereof with opposing handle members 64 for facilitating the lifting of the frame 14 off of the head'of the motor.
In the operation of this device the top or.
erating members 46 will overlie the valve heads 12. The driven pulley or member 35 may be connected to the desired power member or source of power supply so as to rotate the driving gear 31 and coactively rotate the driven gear 38 and the bevelgears 24.
Upon rotation of the gears 24 the slide members 22 will be reciprocated one in the opposite direction from the other and the reciprocation of these slide members 22 will operate to partially rotate or turn the valve operatingmembers 46 through the medium of the connecting arms 38. The desired pressure may be applied to the valve operating members 46 by means of the pressure lever 62, so as to force the depressing members 55 downwardly and coactively force the stems 47 downwardly through the connecting arms or links 38.
It will be obvious from the foregoing that any desired number of valve operating members may be mounted in the frame 14 and that these valve operating members 46 may be provided in pairs or if desired may be provided in only a single series where the valves of the engine are mounted on only one side thereof.
It is, of course, understood that various changes and modifications may be made in the details of construction and design of the above specifically described embodiment of this invention Without departing from the spirit thereof, such changes and modifications being restricted only by the scope of the following claims.
Having thus described my invention what is claimed is 1. A valve grinding device of the character described comprising a frame, guides carried by the frame, slides loosely mounted in said guidesand adapted for reciprocatory movement therein, means for reciprocating said slides, an elongated bar supported within the frame, means connecting said bar with a slide whereby to move said bar reversely from said slide, a plurality of connecting members connecting said bar with said slide intermediate the ends thereof and valve engaging members supported from said connecting members and adapted to oscillate therewith coactive with the reciprocation of the slide.
2. A valve grinding means comprising a frame, a guide carried by the frame, a slide in the guide, a bar positioned in parallel relation to the slide, a slide operating means, an outstanding arm carried by one end of the frame, a link pivotally mounted on the arm and connected at one end to said slide and at the opposite end to said bar, a valve engaging member, and means extending between the slide and the bar for supporting the member in operative position and oscillating the member.
3. A valve grinding means comprising a frame, a guide carried by the frame, a slide in the guide, lation to the slide, a slide operating means, an outstanding arm carried by one end of the frame, a link pivotally mounted on the arm and connected at one end to said slide and at the opposite end to said bar, a spring carried by the frame and engaging the other end of the bar, a valve engaging member, and means extending between the slide and the bar for supporting the member in operative position and oscillating the member coactive with the movement of the slide.
4. A valve grinding means comprising a frame, a guide carried by the frame, a slide in the guide, a bar positioned in parallel relation to the slide, a slide operatlng means, means supported at one end of the frame and connecting the bar and the slide to move the bar reversely with the movement of the slide,

5. A valve grinding means comprising a frame, a guide carried by the frame, a slide in the guide, a bar positioned in parallel'relation to the slide, a slide operating means, an outstanding arm carried by one end of the frame, a link pivotally mounted on the arm and connected at one end to said slide and at the opposite end to said bar, a valve engaging member, means extending between the slide and the bar for supporting the member in operative position and oscillating the member coactive with the movement of the slide, and clamping means carried by the frame for engagement with an engine block to support the frame in operative position on the block.
