This invention has for its object to provide an improved hydraulic press adapted for use indrawing, shaping, cutting or other operations on metal sheets.
The invention comprises the combination of a lower cylinder or cylinders, a platen carrying the lower tool and movable by a ram-or rams in the said cylinder or cylinders, means for supporting an upper fixed tool, a movable pressure plate surrounding the fixed tool, and a plurality of hydraulic cylinders and rams acting on the pressure plate for pressing it towards the lower tool. 7
The invention also comprises the formation of the upper and lower cylinders integrally with a frame consisting in part of a pair of vertical members between which the upper and lower tools and the pressure plate are located.
Also the invention comprises the combination with the upper cylinders, or the pipe system supplying the same, of one or more air chambers whereby a resilient pressure can be exerted on the pressure plate by the upper rams.
In the accompanying three sheets of explanatory drawings 2- Figure 1 is a front elevation with part in section, Figure 2 a side elevation and Figure 3 a plan of a hydraulic press constructed in accordance with this invention.
Figure 4 is a diagram illustrating a means for obtaining resilient pressure in the upper cylinders.
In carrying the invention into effect as shown, I employ a main frame consisting of a pair of vertical side members a, a bottom member 5 and a top member 0. These are preferably cast in one piece. The lower member has formed with it a cylinder d in which a vertical ram 6 can slide. Also a pair of supplementary separate cylinders f are carried on the base and fitted with rams g which act on the platen h attached to the main ram. In the upper member a central hole i is formed, and around the hole are disposed a number of small cylinders each fitted with a ram is. The lower ends of these rams-act on a pressure plate Z in the form of a ring which surroundsa fixed tool 6, or a support 'm for thefixed tool, attached to the underside of the top member 0. The downward movement of the pressure plate is limited by rods n which pass through the upper memher and are each provided at their upper ends with heads 0 adapted to engage: the upper member. The movable lower tool t or the like which co-operates with the underside of the upper tool is carried on the platen h on the upper end of the ram 6 of the lower 6 main cylinder 1). Upward motion is given to the platen it initially by the small rams g, and during their action water is'drawn into the main cylinder cl. As soon as the work piece comes into contact with the pressure plate Z on the upper tool the cylinder d is by means of a suitable valve put into communication with the supply of high pressure fluid, for effecting the active movement ofthe ram 6 and the lower tool t carried by the said ram. a
The sheet to be operated on is placed on the lower tool and raised into contact with the upper tool, and during this movement it is engaged by the pressure ring Z which presses the marginal parts of the sheet against the marginal parts of the lower tool and so holds the sheet during the shaping or other operation.
The amount of the grip exerted on the sheet by the pressure ring is determined b the fluid acting on theupper rams 7c. Fluid can be supplied in the first instance to the cylinders 7' from the same source as that which supplies the cylinder Z2. After the cylinders j, and the system connected. thereto, has been charged, the connection with the supply is cut off by means of a valve. ,To enable the fluid pressure acting on the rams 7:, to be a resilient one I provide in combination with the system connected to the cylinders j a closed air chamber into which compressed air can be admitted from a compressed air bottle or other convenient source. This is illustrated diagrammatically at Figure 4 where 1' represents the said chamber, and 5 represents an air bottle for supplying compressed air to the chamber. The amount of pressure can be regulated either by varying the air pressure or by varying the number of rams 73 in action or by both these methods. WVhen setting up the machine to do a particular kind of work, a trial is made to obtain the most suitable pressure; After the adjustment has been made the hydraulic connection with the main supply is cut off by the valve 25. By reason of the pressure acting on the rams 7c, the latter normally maintain the pressure plate in its lower position. VVhe'n the work sheet comes into pontact with the plate the latter yields, by the displacement of pressure water from the cylinders into the air chamber 1". Consequently the pressure platecan move upwards with the lower, tool. -lVl1en the lower tool descends, it is followed by the pressure plate under the action of the air pressure in 1* on the fluid until arrested by the aforesaid rods n. v V
v To facilitate removal of theshaped sheet from the lower tool after the latter has reached its initial position anejector may, if desired, be combined with the lower tool.
Stripping of the shaped sheet from the upper tool isetfected by the pressure plate. Guiding-of the platen h is effected by adapting the side members a of theframe to serve as guides between which projections g on the platen Ican slide. Each of the members a consists of a pair of suitably spaced vertical parts, and on the inner face of each part is adjustably secured a tapered facing strip p which co-ope'rates with'a tapered side of the projection q. i i
A machine as above described is character- 'ii'ed its simplicity, compactness, and convenience in use. Further the design is such that it can readily be constructed, the main frame being readily machinable at the parts where machining is required. p
The invention isnot limited to the example above described, and subordinate details can be varied to suit different reqi iirements.
Presses as above described are especially suited for shaping motor vehicle radiator bodies, but they can be applied to a variety of analogous uses in which it is required to operate on metal sheets.
Having thus described my invention, what Iclaim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is i L A hydraulic press comprising an upper m mber, a lower member, a cylinder in said lower member and a ram in said cylinder, a fixed tool and a plurality of cylinders on said upper member, a plurality of plungers in said cylinders and a pressure plate on said plungers, a pair of side members connecting said upper and lower members, said members being in one integral unit, and adjustable guide plates on said side members for said ram.

fixed tool and a plurality of cylinders on said upper member, a plurality of plungers in said cylinders and a pressure plate on said plungers, two pairs of side members connect ingsaid upper and lower members, said mem- 'bers being in one integral unit, and adjustinders on said upper member, a plurality of plungers in said cylinders and a pressure plate on said plungers, air cushioning means associated with said upper cylinders, two pairs of side members connecting said upper and lower members, said members being in one integral unit, and adjustable tapered guide plates on the inner adjacent faces of each pair of said side members adapted to 00- act with said projections to guide said platen.

A hydraulic press comprising an upper member, a lower member, a set of cylinders in one-of said members and fast and slow moving rams in said cylinders for operating a tool, a fixedtool and a second set of cylinders *plungers in said second set of cylinders and a pressure plate on said plungers, a pair'of side members connecting said upper and lower members, all of said members being formed in the other of said members, a plurality of integrally with one another, and adjustable:-
guide plates on said side members for said tool. V

A hydraulic press comprising an upper member, a lower member, a set of cylinders in said lower member and a large ram and-aplurality of small rams in said cylinders for operating a tool, a fixed tool and a second set of cylinders in said upper member, a plurality of plungers in said second set of cylinders I and a pressure plate on said plungers, a pair of side inembers connecting said upper and lower members, all of said members being formed integrally witlrone another, and air ushioning means associated with said second set of cylinders. v i
6. A hydraulic press comprising an upper member, a lower member, a large cylinder and a set of smaller cylinders in said lower member and rams in said cylinders for operating, a tool, a fixed tool and a second set of :f'
cylinders in said upper members, a plurality of plungers in said second set of cylinders and a pressure plate on said plungers, air cushioning means associated with said second set of cylinders, two pairs of side members connecting said upper and lower members, all of said members being formed integrally with one another, and adjustable tapered guide plates on the inner adjacent faces of each pair of side members to guide said tool.
