This invention relates to articles embodymg in their construction an extended surface or panel of fabric, such, for instance, as wickerwork articles comprising stake and strand fabric secured to or woven on a frame, and the object is to provide for associating with such an article in a neat and efficient manner a movable member serving to actuate some mechanism connected therewith. The invention finds a particular application to the adjustable backs of baby carriages, and I have shown such an application in the accompanying drawings by Way of example. In these drawings 1 is a partial central longitudinal section through the body of a baby carriage, the construction of which exemplifies the invention;

Referring to the drawings, I have there shown a body of a baby carriage of reed or imitation reed (fiber) construction embodying a seat or bottom 5 from which rise side frames 7 covered with a wickerwork or stake and strand fabric 9. Between the sides at the rear edge of the seat there is pivoted a back 11 in such manner as to be angularly adjustable, the edges of this back being shown in Fig. 1 as connected to the uprights of the side frame 7 by the curtains 13. As best seen in Fig. 2, the back may comprise a frame having the upper and lower frame members 15 and 17 respectively, joined and spaced by side frame members 19. Stakes 21 of fiber or similar material extend between the members 15 and 17 and are interwoven with the filling or strand 23 which is prefer-ably rod 25 provided witha manipulating handle 27 exposed at the top of the back 11 and having its lower end cranked forwardly to extend under the bottom, of seat 5 and provided with .a cross-head 29. the .rod extends between thefianges 'of a channel-like fitting 3lsecured by the outturned fia-nges32 to the bottom of the seat, and the cross-head is adapt-ed to engage with The cranked end of one or another of the pairs of notches 33 cut at the further side of the fitting and is held engaged therewith except when released manipulation of the handle 27 by suitable spring means which will hereinafter be more explicitly described.

Topermit such a rod to be inconspicuously and neatly incorporated as a part of the carriage the rod 25 may pass through the upper and lower frame members 15and 17 of the back and be received in and form, as it be reduced to form a threaded stem 37 to which head 27 is secured and a spring 39 may be interposed between the lower end of the head and a washer 41 supported on suitable abutments 43 formed in the inner face of the tube. This spring tends to draw cross-head 29 home into engagement with the notches 33 eicept when released by pressure on the head 2 Since in a stake and strand fabric the stakes 21 are straight, the filling strand 23 i may be interwoven with the tube 35 and the back constructed as easily as in the case when all reedstakes are utilized. In the finished product the tube is inconspicuous and the whole structure exceedingly neat in appearance and without objectionable projecting parts which are likely to catch the garments of the mother or nurse who is using the baby carriage.

I am aware that the invention may be embodied in other specific forms without departing from the spirit or essential attributes thereof, and I therefore desire the present embodiment to be considered in all respects as illustrative and not restrictive; reference being had to the appended claim rather than to the foregoing description to indicate the scope of the invention.

I claim:

An article embodying a frame including opposed pairs of frame members defining a panel, a number of stakes extending across the panel between the members of one pair and including in their number one stake constituted by a channelled element extending in openings passing through the members of the pair, filling strand embracing the second pair of frame members and interwoven with said stakes to form a stake and strand fabric embracing said channelled element in its plane, and a movable operating member working in the plane of the fabric within said channelled element.
