FLOODED TYPE REFRIGERATION UNIT Filed March 5, 1929 |NVENTOR-$ 2.6.]7'aimbayg/1. 24.. E [106661 ATTORN EYG rammed A r. 11, 1933 PATENT orr cr.
RAYMOND C. HAIMBAUGH AND ANTHONY F. HOESE L, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOBB TO PEERLESS ICE MACHINE COMIPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS FLOODED TYPE REFRIGERATION UNIT Application filed March 5, 1929. Serial No. 344,418.
Our invention relates to improvements in flooded type refrigeration unlts, and 1t consists in the combinations, constructions, and
arrangements herein described and claimed.
An object of our invention is to provide a flooded type refrigeration unit in which novel straining means is provided for screenlng out foreign matter from the refrigerantflmd.
A further object is to provide a device of the type described in which the various mechanical parts are so arranged that a m mmum amount of displacement is attained ma refrigerator. 1 p
A further object is to provide a devlce of the type which will permit the employment of the refrigeration unit in refrigerators of comparatively small dimensions.
Other objects and advantages will appear in the following specification, and the novel features of the invention will be particularly ointed out in the appended claims.
Sur invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing forming part of this application, in which Figure 1 is a installation employing our lnvention,
Figure 2 is a front elevation of the refrig- I eration unit,
Figure 3 is a side elevation of the device shown in Figure 2, and
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken substantially along the line 4-4 of Figure 2.
In carrying out our invention, we make use of a refrigeration unit 1 comprising a hollow body portion 2 having inclined side 8 portions 3, hollow laterally extending portions 4, and a hollow vertical communicating portion 4. The extending portions 4 may be arranged for supporting pans 5. The ans may serve as containers for water to be rozen. The body portion 2 may be cast in a single piece of metal.
In referring to Figure 3, it will be seen that'the upper part of the body portion 2 is shorter than the lower portion'whereby a space 6 is provided. The body portion is ,provided with an opening 7, see Figure 4. cover plate 8 is disposed adjacent the opening 7 and is secured to the body portion 2 by means of screws or bolts 9. The cover plate diagrammatical view of an 8 is provided with-bosses 9' and 10. An outlet shutoff valve 11 is disposed upon the boss 9' and secured to the cover plate 8 by means of screws or bolts 12. The boss 10 is recessed at 11 to receive one end of a cylindrical mem-' ber 12' having a cone shaped screen 13 disposed therein. An inlet shut off valve 14 is disposed upon the outer end of the cylindrical member 12' and is firmly secured to the cover plate 8 by means of bolts or screws 15.
The cover plate 8 is provided with an integral bracket 15' arranged to project through the'opening'? and to the interior of the bod portion 2. The cover plate 8 is provided wit a pair of lugs 16 between which a float leverarm 17 is pivotally mounted. The lever-arm 17 is provided with an extending portion 18,
the outer end of which terminates relatively near the bracket 15. The bracket 15' is provided with an adjusting screw 19 which may be adjusted for limiting the movement of the extending portion 18. A float 20 is secured to the outer end of the lever-arm 17 as shown in Figures 3 and 4. j
An opening 21 places the inlet 'shut off valve 11 in communication with the interior of the hollow body portion 2, and an opening 22 places the outlet shut off valve in 'commu nication with the interior of the body portion. A valve 23 is operatively connected with the lever-arm 17 and is arranged for closing the opening 22. A'spring 24 is secured to the adjusting screw 19 and the leverarm 17 for partly assisting the raising of the Y lever-arm. The lever-arm is provided with a series of. notches 25 within which one end of the spring 24 may be secured for varying the lifting influence of the spring.
In Figure 1 we have shown an installation showing our refrigeration unit. The refrigeration unit 1 is disposed within the refrigerator 26. A motor 27 isprovided for driving a compressor 28. The compressor 28 is provided with a discharge pipe 29associated with a condenser 30 connected with a receiver 31. A liquid line 32 leads from the A,.condenser 31 to. the inletshut off valve 14.
The liquid line 32 may be secured toa threaded portion 33 associated Withthe valve 14. A suction line 34 connects the outlet 'shut off 2 1,eos,a91
From the foregoing description of the various parts of the device, the operations thereof may be readily understood.
When the motor 27 is started, the compressor 28 is actuated at which time the refrigerant liquid vapor, contained in the upper section of the hollow body portion 2, is drawn through the suction line 34 to the compressor 28 and therein compressed to a higher pressure and passed from the compressor through the discharge line 29' to the condenser 30. The vapor is condensed to a liquid state in the condenser. The refrigerant liquid passes from the condenser 30 to the receiver 31 from which the liquid ispassed through the liquid line. 32 and the inlet shut oif valve 14. The liquid passing through the inlet shut 01]? valve passes through the screen 13, the opening 22, and into the interior of the hollow body portion 2. When the liquid within the hollow body portion reaches a predetermined height, as indicated at X in Figure 3, the float 20 will be raised a sufiicient distance for moving the valve 23 into its seat and thereby closing the opening 22.
It will be seen that the construction of the body portion 2 is such that the Valves 11 and 1 14 are disposedwithin the spaces 6 whereby the refrigeration unit is compact in construction and is so designed that the unit will occupy a minimum of space within a refrigerator and the like.
It will further be seen that the body portion 2 is so designed that cooling surfaces 1 A inclose three sides of the pans 5. The design I of the hollow body portions 2 and 4 is such 40 that a maximum cooling surface is provided.
a We claim:
- 1. A refrigeration unit comprising a hollow one-piece casting having a short portion provided with an opening, a cover for closin the opening, an outlet shut-off valve secure to the cover and communicating with the interior of said casting, an inlet shut-off valve secured to the cover and communicating with the interior of the casting, a straining element disposed between the inlet shut-off valve and the cover for straining a refrigerant fluid, and means for securing the inlet shutoff valveto the'cove i and for holding the straining element bet een said valve and the 55 cover.
2. 1A refrigeration unit comprising a hollow one-piece casting having a short portion provided with an opening, a cover for closin the opening, an outlet shut-off valve secure 60 to the cover and communicating with the interior of said casting, an inlet shut-off valve secured to the cover and communicating with the interior of the casting, a straining element disposed between the inlet shutofi' valve 65 and the cover for/straining a refrigerant
