Objects of the present invention are to improve the art ofpforming webs ofthe class referred to so as to overcome the undesirable conditions resulting "from'unequal or irregular owand thus to' provide for forming a web of substantially uniform thickness andv ber density to provide improved means for controlling the thickness and/or ber density of the forming web; to provide apparatus for these purposes of relatively simple and eicient and yet strong and durable construction; and a.so to provide apparun of this wire above and being supported-by the talbleros 12. These bars are threaded opposltely from the ends thereof and each of these threaded portions carries hangers or brackets 21 and 22 respectively each having a smooth bore which slides freely over the threads. .The .deckle frames 23 and 24 are supported by the brackets 21 and 22. The clamping members 33 are in the form kof U-shaped clamps which embrace the reinforcing flanges 34 Yor 35. The clam ing members are fixed alternatelyv to t e members 31 and 32. One end of each clamping member,'as the end 37 of member 33 is fixed to the one section while the other end of this clamping member carries an adjusting screw 38 which is adapted to hold a clamping element 39 against the adjacent section and thus firmly to clamp the two sections together. Each clamping member may also be fitted with avertically disposed'adjustingv screw 41 arranged to engage one of the upper flanges, as the flange 35 of the section 32 `for raising or lowering the central portion of the slice or if desired for adjusting the two sections of the slice in longitudinal alignment.
In accordance with the present invention the adjacent sides of each of the sections 31 and 32 are fitted with facing plates 42 and 43. These may be relatively thin plates which extend above and below the sections associated therewith and have along their upperedges outwardly disposed flanges 44 and 46. The plates 43 associated with the section 32 carry headed pins or rivets 47, 48 and 49, the shanks of these rivets being slidably received in vertically. disposed slots 47', 48 and 49 with the heads overlying these slots so' as effectively to retain the facing plates on the section. It will be understood that the facing plates 42 are mounted upon the section 31 in a like manner. The upper flange of each facing plate overlies the upper flange of the associated section. An adjusting screw 51 extends between these flanges and has threaded engagement with the lower flange 34 and is freely slidable through an enlarged opening or slot 42 in the flange 44 of the facing plate. This adjusting screw preferably is mounted directly above the retaining pin 48 and its associated slot 48. plate adjusting screws 53 and 54 are threaded through the iange of the plate to bear" upon the flange 35 of the section 32 or upon theange 34 of the section 31. In using this apparatus the paper making machine is operated in the usual manner, paper stock being delivered from the ow box onto the traveling wire at the breast roll is held back by the slice bars and issues beneath the latter in a thin stream traveling at the velocity of the wire. As conditions are observed which give rise to eddy currents or other irregularities in flow of the stock, such as ordinarily result in the formation of a web of non-uniform fiber density or variable thickness, the facing plates may be adjusted vertically to correct such conditions. For
instance,.these plates may be adjusted independentlyr by loosening the screws 53 and 54 and operating the screw 51 to raise or lower the plate while the end screws 53 and 54 may be employed for tilting or canting the plate about the rivet 48, and at the same time se- 1 curing the platevertically in position. It will also be seen that instead of adjusting each plate individually the entire' series or at least a plurality of plates may be adjusted so as to arrange their lower edges in av straight or curved line as conditions mayrequire. In
this way, it is possible to' overcome the defects of improper flow or delivery of the stock so as to assure even distribution and the formation of-a sheet of paper of uniform fiber density across the web and also of' uniform thickness'. In an apparatus for forming a travelling web of paper stock comprising a travelling sirface and a slice bar disposed transverselyv thereacross, the combination -of a plurality of plates disposed in overlapping relation4 along the slice bar, and means for supporting the plates for individual adjustment relative to the travelling surface and transversely 'of the slice bar about pivotal axes spaced therealong, whereby the forming web may be maintained at a substantially uniform thickness thereacross.
5. In an apparatus for forming a travelling'web of paper stock comprising a travelling surface and-a slice bar disposed transversely thereacross, the combination of a plurality of facin plates disposed along ythe slice bar, heade pins mounted on one of the latter members and extending through slotted o nings in the other thereof for retaining t e plates on the bar, and means for adjusting the plates individually relative to the travelling surface, whereby the forming web may be maintained at a substantially uniform thickness thereacross.

In an apparatus for forming a travelling web of paper stock comprising a travelling surface and. a slice bar disposed transthereacross, the combination of a plura ity of facing plates disposed along the slice bar, headed pins mounted on one of the latter members and extending through slotted openings in the other thereof for retaining the plates on the bar, means associated with each plate and disposed above one of the pins cooperating therewith for raising the plate, and other means disposed above another of the pins cooperating with each plate for lowering the latter, whereby the surface and a slice bar disposed transversely thereacross, the combination of a plurality of facing plates disposed along the slice bar, means for adjusting each plate relative to the travelling surface comprising a plurality of adjusting screws associated with each platel and spaced longitudinally along the bar, at least one of the'screws for each plate being adapted to lower the same while another of the latter screws is adapted to raise the plate,

8. In an apparatus of the class described, the combination of a slice bar, a plurality of plates disposed along the slice bar and adapted to project below the flatter, means for retaining said plates on the slice bar and for supporting said plates for substantially vertical movement relative to each other and relative to the slice bar, and means for securing said plates in desired positions of ad'ustment so that the lower edges of said plates may be arranged to project below the slice bar to control the flow of paper stock.

In an apparatus of the class described the combination of a slice bar and means providing a locally adjustable lower edge adapted to project below the slice bar for controlling, the flow 'of paper stock thereunder, said means comprising a plurality of members having lower edge portions disposed along the slice bar substantially in end to end relation to form said locally adjustable lower edge,`A means for supporting said melnbers along the slice bar for individual adjustment, and means for securing said members in different positions of adjustment.

In an apparatus of the class described the combination of an extensible slice bar comprising` overlapping sections adapted to be securedin different positions of adjustment longitudinally of each other, and means providing a locally adjustable lower` edge adapted to project below the slice barfor controlling the flow of paper stock thereunder, said means comprising la plurality of plate members having lowei` edge portions disposed along the slice bar substantiall in end to end relation to form said locally a j ustable lower edge, said plate members being disposed along theslice bar on the adjacent sides of said sections substantially from the outer ends thereof to a position between the overlapping portions of said sections, at least two of said plate members being disposed in side by side overlapping relation between the overlapping portions of said sections of the slice bar, means for supporting said plate members for individual adjustment relative to each other, and5 means for securing said plate members in different positions of adjustment.

In an apparatus of the class described the combination of an extensible slice bar comprising overlapping sections adapted to be secured in different positions of adjustment longitudinally of'each other, and means providing a locally adjustable lower edge adapted to project below the slice bar for controlling the flow of paper stock thereunder, said means comprising a plurality of plate members having lower edge portions disposed along the slice bar substantially in end to end relation to form said locally adj ustable lower edge, at least two of said plate members being disposed in side by side relation between the overlapping portions of said sections of the slice bar, means fr'supporting said plate members for vindividual adjustment relative to each other, means for securing said plate members indifferent positions of adjustment, and means for clamping the overlapping portions of said sections and the interposed plate members together to secure said sections in the desired position of adjustment relative to .each other.

In an apparatus of the class described' .the combination of an extensible slice bar comprising overlapping sections adapted to be secured in different positions of adjustment longitudinally of each other, and means providing a locally adjustable lower edge adapted to project below the slice bar for controlling the flow of paper stock thereunder, said means comprising a plurality ,of plate members having lower edge portions disposed along the slice bar substantially in end to end relation to form said locally adjustable lower edge, some of said plate members being disposed 'along each of the sections of the slice bar and on adjacent sides of said sections, means carried by each of said sections for supporting the plate members associated therewith for individual adjustment relative to each other, means for securing the plate members in desired positions of adjustment, at least one of the plate members associated with each of said sections being disposed between the overlapping portions thereof,

In an apparatus of the class described the combinationof an extensible slice bar comprising overlapping. sections adapted to4 be secured in dierent positions of adjustment longitudinally of each other, and means providing a locally adjustable lower edge adapted to project below the slice bar for controlling the flow'of paper stock thereunder, said means comprising a plurality of bers being disposed along each of the sections.
