Description

Patented Mar. 21, 1933 UNITED stares PATE-NTffif-FICE.
HERMANN nnoxnn, or cnvcmnn'rr, onro, Assrenon To 'rnn 'rwrrcnntr. rnoonss COMPANY, or s'r. BERNARD, OHIO, aoonronarroiv or onro FLEXIBLE TRANSPARENT GELATINOUS .BRODFGT No Drawing.
This invention relates to flexible transparent gelatinous products such as gelatin sheets and likewise to a process of making them.
In my copending application Serial No.
432,565 I have disclosed and claimed the use of an admixture of mahogany sulphonates and oil as a softening agent for glues, gelatins, and like products in order to render them more flexible and have fully set forth the advantages of said softening agents over softening agents previously .used. I
The object of this invention is to provide a process of making gelatinous products such as gelatin sheets both flexible and transparent with the use of mahogany sulphonates and oil as a softening agent. g
It is likewise the object of the invention to provide improved gelatinous products which are both transparent and flexible. The mahogany sulphonates in question are particularly described in the Fischer and Red dish Patent No. 1,7 03,838, February 26,1929. The oil which I prefer to use for the purposes of this invention is a transparent one of the type known as medicinal white oil. The invention will bedisclosed particularly in relation to the manufacture of gelatin sheets.
A water solution is first made containing between 5 and 15% gelatin. Next is added the softening agent which may be in quantity up to 35% the weight of the gelatin depend ing on the flexibility desired. A. 20 to 25% proportion of softener to gelatin is considered appropriate and expedient for gelatin sheets. The softener, that is, the mahogany sulphonates and the oil, tend to form the milky or turbid solution in the gelatin solution and this lack of full and complete transparency is undesirable in the ultimate prodnot.
To counteract this tendency toward cloudiness, I use in the softener and/or in the solution, between and 20% of a substance adapted to clarify the solution. The substances which have given good results comprise methanol, ethanol, butyl cello solve and hexalin. These bodies may be added directly to the softener or to the solution. The softener itself may comprise between 30 and Application filed May 5, 1931. Serial in. 535,303.
45% mahogany sulphonates and between 70 and p oil; The. admixture of 45% mahogany sulphonates, 55% oil and 10% of their ,weight of hexalin produces a softener for gelatin films or sheets which is highly suitable for producingflnished productsadapted to be used as transparent wrapping paper.
The gelatin sheets or films are usually formed by. flowing the gelatin solution upon a belt, evaporating the Water and other vola- 1.6 tile components such as the alcohol, drying the lilm, then stripping the film from the belt.
- All claims directed to the emulsifying properties of mahogany sulphonates, the use of alcohols and the like in conjunction therewith 5 and the softening action of'mahogany and oil solutions on the colloidal bodies, are reserved for. other copending applications, the subject matter being claimed herein being strictly limited to the product and method aspects of forming flexible transparent gelatinous bodies.
Having described my invention, I desire to be limited only by the ensuing claims p 1. A transparent and flexible gelatinous product, the constituting components of which comprise gelatin, white oil, and mahogany sulphonates.
2. The method of producing transparent flexible gelatinous products, said method, comprising, forming a solution of gelatin in Water, emulsifying transparent oil in said solution by using mahogany sulphonates as emulsifying agents, maintaining said solution clear by means of an alcohol therein, and forming the final product by evaporation of the volatile components.
3. The method of producing transparent flexible gelatinous products, said method, comprising, forming'a solution of gelatinin water, emulsifying transparent oil in said solution by using mahogany sulphonates as emulsifying agents, maintaining said solution clear by means of hexalin, and forming the. final product by evaporation of'the volatile components.
1. The method of producing transparent flexible gelatinous products, said method, comprising, forming a solution of gelatin in water, emulsifying transparent oil in said solution by using mahogany sulphonates as emulsifying agents, maintaining said solution clear by means of butyl cello solve, and
forming the final product by evaporation of 5 the Volatile components.
5. In the process of making transparent flexible gelatinous products, thestep of forming a solution, the constituting components of which comprise Water, gelatin, transparent oil, mahogany sulphonates, and a volatile substance of the nature disclosed adapted to render said solution clear and transparent.
6. A transparent and flexible gelatinous product, comprising, gelatin and a softener for the gelatin, comprising, mahogany sulphonates and White oil, said softener being approximately to% of the weight of the gelatin. 7
' In Witness whereof, I hereunto subscribe 20 my name.
