This invention relates to frames and concerns itself primarily with frames adapted to display advertising posters. Y

It is Van obj ect of this invention to provide a frame adapted toreceive anvadvertising poster and to retainsaid poster in imperforate condition smoothly and securely in position.

Another object is to provide a frame having hinged strips which are provided with iiexible clips retained upon said strips in movable relation thereto. i '4 Another object lies in theprovision of a frame having'hinged strips which are provided with spring clips carried by said strips f and transversely movable relative thereto.

A further object lies in the provision of a frame having hinged strips which are provided with upwardly bowed Vflexible clips rockably secured to said strips.

' A further object is the provision ofa frame having hinged strips, said strips being provided with recessed Vportions in which flexible clips are secured.

A further. object is to provide a frame having hinged strips, which are provided with upwardly bowed flexible clips, one end ofsaid clips in the operative position of said strips lying substantially in alinement with the strip hinges or extending therebeyond.

A further object liesin the provision of a frame having-poster securing strips hinged to such frame whereby to avoid binding between said strips and said frame.

This invention constitutes an improvement on the advertising frame disclosed and. claimed in4 applicants -copending application, Serial No..517,966, liled February 24, 1931.` While this improvement presents la marked andV novel contribution to the art to which it pertains it, nevertheless,v retains those features ofthe invention disclosed in said copending application which practical experience has shown to be desirable. y Thus,

the frame, embodies the stiles 10 and 11 and the rails 12 `and 13, presenting a rectangu- 80 i lar opening adapted to be `closed by a backing member 14 which may take the form of a galvanized metallic sheet secured, preferably, to the undersurface of the rails and stiles. In this position the backing member serves to reinforce the stiles and rails, although, if desired, additional reinforcing members, such as 15, may be utilized. The

top rail may carry any preferred design which is pleasing in appearance. The. construction thus far described is similar'to that disclosed in the applicationV above referred to with one significant distinction, namely, the omission from the improved frame of the depressions formed in the backing mem- '9.5 ber of the frame of thesaid application.

Eachof the stiles and rails isirabbetedv as V indicated at 164 to prevent bindingtherewith of the strips, 17,18, 19 and 20 `hinged to said stiles and rails. "These strips, as clearly-gil,-'i90 lustrated in Figure 1 of the drawings, extend parallel and in spaced relation tothe inner edge of the respective stiles or rails to avoid contact there-with and consequent binding in the event of warpage of said strips. This spacing is indicated at 21, 22, 23 and 24. The free edges of said strips are bevelled as designated at 25, `26, 27 and 28 to present a pleasing appearance and, additionally, to cooperate with the

17 and 19 which, inturn, have'their'lower ends overlapped by bevelled ends of the bottom strip 20, whereby when the low-er strip is locked by the mechanismbriefly referred to hereinafter the top strip and side strips will also be retained inA locked position. The` inner faces of the strips are rabbeted as'indicated at 33 and the lower ends of theside strips, as well as the ends of the top strip, are recessed at 34 to provide finger` grips to aid in swinging said strips toward open position.

`Therabbeting of. the inner faces vof said strips presents a limited area of contact between the strips and a poster 35, position in the frame adjacent the face edges of the strips to insurev tight engagement with the poster at these edges.

' As noted heretofore, the overlapping arrangement of the hinged strips insures locking of all the strips when one of said strips, the bottom one in the illustrated embodiment of the invention, is locked. The locking mechanism is clearly described in the' above referred to application Vand it Ywill here suffice to point out thatV said mechanism comprises a detent member 36 rotatably supported upon a base 37 secured to the bottom rail and is adapted to be projected into locking engagement with and disengaged from a keeper 38 secured to the bottom strip by means of a key 39 adapted to be inserted in said detent member. The locking mechanism embodies, also, a releasing arm 40 engageable with the bottom strip upon disengagement of the detentrmember from its keeper.

Eachof the clips is formed of a strip of metal bowed upwardly from the ends toward the. center thereof as viewed in the poster retaining' position ofthe strips. VThe inner resultant forces in said clips tending to force the strips towardV open position areY eliminated. Furthermore, with this` construction thel movement of the clips relative to the strips effects proper engagement of said clips with a poster as said strips'are swung to closed position'and a drawing action upon said poster toward-the edges thereofto maintain the poster in a smooth', unwrinkle'd condition withinthe frame. By the use of ilexiblel clips a verypronounced drawing action upon the poster is obtained and at the same time the integrity thereof is'maintained. The

exchange value of the poster isA thus wholly preserved.

The operation :ofthe strips and the'ef- 105 fectiveness' of the entirev frame, of which the strips constitute an integral part, for its intended purposeis'believed to be apparent without further description.y lIt willalso be apparent that the invention is not limited to the exact embodiment disclosed, but that changes may be made therein lwithout departing from the spirit thereof." A frame adapted to" receive aposter and the like, comprising a Vplurality of hinged strips, each of said strips having a plurality of spaced, flexible clips secured thereto,l said clips inthe closing movement of said strips engaging a poster positioned in said frame and drawing said poster to positionsmoothly within said frame. i i

'A frame adapted to receive `a poster and thelike, comprising a plurality of hinged strip's,each of said-stripshaving a plurality of spaced, iiexible clips secured thereto, said clips in the closing movement of said'strips engaging a poster positioned in said frame and drawing said poster to position smoothly within said frame, said flexible clips comprising pieces of metal bowed upwardly from the ends thereof toward the center.

3. A frame adapted to receive a poster and the like, comprising a plurality of hinged strips, each of said strips having a plurality of spaced, iiexible clips secured thereto, said clips in the closing movement of said strips engaging a poster positioned in said frame and drawing said poster to position smoothly within said frame, said flexible clips comprising pieces of metal bowed upwardly from the ends thereof toward the center, and being secured in relatively movable relation to said strips.

A frame adapted to receive a poster and the like, comprising a plurality of hinged strips, each of said strips having a plurality of spaced, flexible clips secured thereto, said clips in the closing movement of said strips engaging a poster positioned in said frame and drawing said poster to position smoothly within said frame, said flexible clips comprising pieces of metal bowed upwardly from the ends thereof toward the center, each of said clips being secured substantially through its center and in rockable relation to said strips.

5. A frame adapted to receive a poster and the like, comprising a plurality of hinged strips, each of said strips having its inner face rabbeted and a plurality of upwardly bowed spring clips secured to said strips and lying in transverse relation thereto in said rabbeted portions.

A frame adapted to receive posters and the like, comprising a plurality of hinged strips, a plurality of upwardly bowed spring clips secured to said strips adapted to engage a poster placed in said frame, the outer ends of said clips in the closed position of said strips lying in or beyond a vertical plane including the axes of the hinges of the respective strips to which said clips are secured.

7. A frame adapted to receive a poster and the like, comprising a plurality of hinged strips, each of said strips having a rabbeted inner face and a plurality of upwardly bowed spring clips secured in said rabbeted portions in movable relation to said strips, for the purpose set forth.

A frame adapted to receive a poster and the like, comprising stiles and rails, a plurality of strips, hinges securing said strips in spaced relation to said stiles and rails, each of said strips having a rabbeted inner face and a plurality of upwardly bowed spring clips secured in said rabbeted portions in movable relation to said strips, the outer ends of said clips in the poster engaging position of said strips lying not closer to said strips than a plane includingthe axes of the hinges of the respective strips. A frame for the display of posters and r the like comprising a plurality of hinged strips, means carried by each of said strips in spaced relation to the inner edge thereof, said means and said edge of each of said strips being adapted to engage a marginal portion of a poster positioned in said frame and retain said poster in imperforate condition.

10. A frame adapted to receive a poster and the like, comprising a plurality of hinged strips and poster engaging sprlng clips secured to the inner face of said strips in transginal portions of a poster positioned in' said frame, said flexible means exerting tensio upon said poster.

13. A frame for the display of posters and the like comprising a backin member, a plurality of hinged strips engaging a poster supported in said frame upon said backing member, poster engaging means, said strips in the closedl position thereof bearing upon said poster en aging means and exerting an outwardly irected pressure thereupon, said pressure being communicated through said means to said poster.

14. A frame for the display of posters and the like comprising a backing member, a plu rality of hinged strips for engaging a poster supported in said frame upon said backing member, resilient poster engaging means carried by said strips, said strips in the closed position thereof bearing upon said poster engaging means and exerting an outwardly directedpressure thereupon, said pressure being communicated through said means to said poster.
