Au'zso L PEEL wa izk A TTOBNEY$ Patented Feb. 28 1933' UNITED STATES PAT ALFRED LEO VPEEL, or BIRMINGHAM, ENGLAND" FASTENING ron ATTACHE CASES, BAGS, 'rnuivxs, AND THE LIKE Application filed December 2, 1930, Serial No; 499,449, and in Great. Britain December 6, 1929. i
The invention relates to fastenings for attach cases, trunks, gramophone and wireless cases and thelike of the kind formed by two principal members, the one comprising a lug rigidly liked to the lid or body and the other comprising a link and a hand lever, or equivalent part, attached to the body or lid, these two members to co-operate by the link engaging the lug to pull the lid and body 0 closely to each other from the hand lever or like action, and hold them so. There is usually an undercut abutment face on the lug for the link to engage.
In the use of such fastenings the link requires to be hand placed over or clear of, the
lug while the hand lever or equivalent part is inoperative.
In this kind of fastening the invention provides an arrangement whereby the movements of the link are only'controlled by the hand operation of the lever or equivalent part, that is to say, in unfastening, the movement of the lever in one direction first'takes the link out of fastening engagement with the lug and afterwards swings it clear of the lug so that the case or trunk may open, and similarly the operation of the lever in the other direction first swings the link over the lug and then pulls the link down into fastening engagement with the lug, there being no separate hand operation of the link.
The link is directly or indirectly connected to the manually operated lever, or part, so that movement ofthe lever or part in one direction operates to automatically move the link out of engagement with the lug and subsequently swing it or move it clear (3 the lug so that the bag or case can open, whereas movement of said lever or part back again efi'ects converse movements of said link and fastens the lid and body securely together.
The invention also embodies constructional features to carry out the aforesaid action, and these will be hereinafter described in connection with the accompanying drawings,
Figs. 1 and 2 are respectively a plan and a longitudinal section of one form of the invention.
Figs. 3 and 4 are respectively a plan and the action-the link tion.

side section of a third form of the invention. Figs. 7, 8 and 9 are respectively a plan, side section, and detail of a fourth form of the invention. a v
With reference to Figs. 1 and 2 the body of the case is represented ata and the lid at c. The lug d is fixed by its attachment plate d2 to the lid and is arranged with a shoulderd3 behind which the link, hereinafter described, engages as the equivalent to undercutting of the lug. A hand lever e isfulcrumed at 62 to its attachment plate f, whereby the fastenings part is attached to the body a, andis hand operated from its end 63. Tothis lever at g is fulcrumed the one end ofa member it having side bars [22, k3 which at their ends the link j which swings about the pivotings z', z, and near this end is formed with abutments 7'2, 7'2, to co-operate with a fixed bar l forming part of the-enclosing casing, 42:, se-' cured to the attachment plate 7 to enclose the member h and the inner end of the link 7'.
The full lines represent the parts described in fastening position pulling the lid a closely to the body a and holding it so; the link 7' is in'engagement with the lug d, and the member it pulls the link hard against the lug by the closed position of the lever e, the pivoting of the member h'to the lever being at this time inwards of the fulcrumed position 62 of said lever. The dotted positions of the partsshow the lever e swung outwardly, the member hmoved upwardly and the link 9' swung outwardly about the bar Z but during clear of the shoulder d3 until the seatings 9'2 contact the bar Z, when the action causes the z, i are oppositely pivoted to the inner end of 7' is first moved upwardly link 7' to swing outwardly into the dotted I position as shown. Conversely the link j first swings inwardly overthe lug d andthen pulls downwardly fastening the lid and body of the case to each other.
The construction of Figs 3 and 4' is substantially similar to the construction of Figs. 1 and 2 andtherefore similar lettersof reference are used where permissible.

nected to said lever, asecuring connected to the other end q boXes, gramophone and wireless cases,
The lug (Z is undercut instead of being formed with the definite shoulder, while the side bars k2, 7L8, constituting the member are The opposite slots 9'3 in the sides of the link j engage the bar Z. I l r The full lines position show. the fastenings in operation, and the dotted lines position the fastenings out of action,-the link being first lifted clear of the lug before being swung outwardly.
In the form 6 the link j to'engage pivoted to the leverc at 9 but the middle parts 14,94 of its side bars are shaped to be guidedin holes 02 of anextension 0 or the attachment so that when the lever is hand moved upwardly th-elink jfirst littsolear of the shoulder 1Z3 of the lug (Z, outwardly into the position lines clear of said lug, so body can separate.
' lVhere permissible the same letters of referencea're used on these figures as in the previous ones.
The form of the invention Figs. 7, 8 and 9 is thesame as the form Figs. 1 and 2 except that the hand lever e swings at right-angles to the movement of the member 7a, and thereshown in dotted that the lid and fore in these figures the same letters or reference are used where permissible.
The lever in this form of the invention is fulcrumed to the casing at 62 to swing in the plane 01" the tastenings part, in o her words, 1
across the fasteni-ngs part, and a bar 1" fulcrumed at $22 to the casing, and connecting at 3 with the lever e by pin and slot engagement, isprovided with a peg which slidably engages a slotted bar T5 in the member h to traverse said member upwardly and down- 'wardly to give the same action for the link 7' as described with refe rice to Figs. 1 and 2; this form of the invention illustrating simply a dilierent form of hand lever action from the form of Figs. 1 and 2.
