Description
Feb. 28, 1933. H IHOVGAARD I 1,899,505
COMBINATION TOOL Filed March 25, 1930 Patented Feb. 28, 1933 UNITED STATES HARVEY novenann, orjnousron, TEXAS COMBINATIQN: moon Application filed March 25, 1930. Serial no. esaesa This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a combination tool.
One object of the invention is to provide a carpenters square in combination with a hand saw having straight edges, one normally at right angles to the other, one of said edges being adjustable relative to the other for measuring or setting work at other than right angles, if such adjustment be desired.
WVith the above and other objects in View, the invention has particular relation to certain novel features of construction, arrangement of parts and use, an example of which is given in thisspecification and illlustrated in the accompanying drawing wherein:
Figure 1 shows a side View of the implement.
Figure 2 shows an edge View thereof, and
Figure 3 shows a fragmentary side elevation showing the straight edges disposed at other than right angles to each other.
Referring now more particularly to the drawing, wherein like numerals of reference designate similar parts in each of the figures, the numeral 1 designates a hand saw blade which is attached to the handle 2 and which has the straight edge 3. At one side the handle 2 has a transverse abutment 4 and secured to said side of said handle there is a cover plate 5 formin with the body of the blade, a channel in which the movable leg 6 of the square is fitted. This leg has the straight edge 7 which is at right angles to the straight edge 3 when said leg is seated in said channel. The leg 6 has the oppositely turned dslots 8, 8 in its inner margin, one at each end and bolts 9, 9 are fitted through suitable bearings in the blade 1 and housing plate 5, said bolts passing also through the J-slots 8 and being secured in place by suitable wing nuts 10. When the leg 7 is so secured in place the saw may be used for the ordinary purpose of a square. As shown in dotted lines, in Figure 1, the leg 6 is adjusted so that the straight edge 7 will assume a position at an acute angle of 45 degrees to the straight edge 3 and as shown in Figure 3, said straight edge 7 is adjusted in the reverse position to that shown in Figure 1, When adjusted into these positions,
the timbers may be marked, by the application of the tool thereto, in an obvious manner, for cutting at 45 degree angles to an edge of the timber. In making these adjustments the wing nuts 10 may be loosened and the leg 6 moved longitudinally to disengage one J-slo-t from its bolt and the freed end of the leg may then be swung aroundv into the desired position and the wing nuts 10 then tightened to secure the leg in said position. The 0 leg has angular markings as 11 on the upper surface thereof which may be brought into alignment with the corresponding free edge of the housing plate 5 to bring the straight edge 7 into the desired annular relation with the straight edge 3.
The drawing and description disclose what is now considered to be the preferred form of the invention by way of illustration only while the broad principle of the invention will be defined by the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. An implement of the character described including a blade having a straightedge, a handle to which the blade is attached, said handle having an extension which forms, with saidblade, a groove, a transverse leg on one side of the blade seated in the groove and having a straight edge, said leg having marginal, oppositely arranged J-slots, bolts extending through the blade and through said slots, and positioned to permit the longitudinaladjustment of the leg on the said bolts to bring the open end of either slot opposite its bolt, nuts on said bolts, said bolts and nuts forming means for securing said leg to said blade.
2. An implement of the character described including a handle, a blade on the handle having a straight edge, an extension on the handle and forming, with the blade, a groove, a transverse leg on one side of the blade in said groove and having a straight edge, two releasable means for securing said leg to said blade, said leg being adjustable with refer- 95. ence to one securing means, when the other securing means is released, so as to vary the relation of said straight edges, and the unreleased means being efi'ective to secure said leg in said adjusted position.
3. An implement of the character described including a blade having a straight edge, a
handle secured to one end of the blade and having a transverse abutment, a cover plate secured to the side of the handle and forming with the blade a channel, a movable leg in said channel and having a straight edge normally at right angles to the straight edge of the blade and having slots, means passing through said slots for releasably securing each end of the leg in the channel, said securing means being releasable to permit either end of the leg to be swung outwardly and being effective to secure the other end of the leg in a position to hold the leg rigidly at any selected position.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
HARVEY HOVGAARD.
