The member. v is moved into its operative position-through. the movement of" a treadle 28 pivotally mounted in bearings 29 which areconnected to the rail 2., This treadle has the downwardly-extending endpportion f 30-.which is connected by a cord 31 to one end of the member 25.. When the tread-1e is depressed a pulling force will be appliedtotheconk connected thereto, which link is provided nection 31 which will move the longitudinally-extending member 25 away from the rail 3and the links 26 serveto maintain the face24 of said member always in parallel relation with the rails. Such movement of the member 25 brings the face 24 into engagement withthe friction wheel 23 as above de scribed with the result that the movement of a the carriage on the rails will serve to shift the slide 9 on thecarriage. v
The present invention provides novel means whereby the shifting of the longitudinally-extending member 25 into its operative position will automatically release the pawls 14 and 19 so as to permitthe free back- -ward rotation ofthe shaft 10. This release of the pawls is secured by a pawl-releasing mechanism which is rendered operative by the member 25 when it moves into its operative position.
-=The carnage 4" has suspendedltherefrom an arm 32 which is pivotallyinounted at 33 34 adapted to be engaged by the longitudi- 1 nally-extending member 25 when the latter and which carries at its lower end a wheel is'moved into its operative position. This arm 32 is connected to a pawl-releasing member '35 WlllCll is mountedon the carriage and "extends transversely thereof. Such pawlbearings 48 mounted on' the carriage4 releasing member is supported on arms 36 a which are pivoted at one endin bearings 37 secured to the carriage'and'which are pivoted at their upper ends to the member 35.
46 indicates a shaft which is journalleg in ne end of said shaft is provided with an offset portion 49 which is-pivotallyconnected to the pawl-releasing member 35 and the other end is provided with an arm 47 which is pivotallyconnected to the upper end of a link 38, the lower end of which thearm32. 1 7
When the longitudinally-extending member-25is moved into operative position into engagement with the friction wheel 23 said is pivotallyconnected to member will engagethe wheel 34 at the lower end of the arm 32 and swing the latter to the left Fig. 3. Suchswinging movement ofthe,
arm- 32 operates through the link 38 to turn the shaft 46 and the turning movement of the shaft operates through the arm 49 to raise the dog-releasing member 35, such member swinging about the arms 36during its rising movement. Such rising movement of the member 35' serves to release the. pawls 14 and 19 by the following mechanism.
with apin or proj ecti0n43 that extends across the upper edge of the quadrant39 so that when said quadrant is turned about its axis the upward swinging movement thereof Wlll operate through the link 42 to raise the "pawll4 out of vengagement with the ratch- Thelower end of the quadrant member 39 hasaalaterally-extending foot 44 secured thereto which normally rests on the pawlreleasing member 35. When said pawl-releasing member is raised as above'described it acts throughnthe foot 44 to swing the quadrant member 39-about its pivot 41 thereby raising the feed pawl 14 out of engagement Withthe ratchet 13 as above described.
Such swinging rmovement of the quadrant member also operates through the finger 45 to raise the stop pawl 1-9 so that both pawls 14 and=19 are disconnected from the'ratchet structure by the swinging movement of the quadrant member 3 9.
the use of the swinging arm 32, the link 38 and dog-releasing member 35, the pawls14 and 19 will be automatically disconnected from the ratchet structure by the movement given to the longitudinally-ex tending member 25by the depression of the treadle 28. r i
The clearance between thermenibers25" and the roll 34 is less than that between said,
c member andthe wheel 23 so that the pawls will be releasedbefore the member 25 is brought into operative engagement with the wheel23. V. i,
i There is herein shownmeans fo'r:releasing the pawls manually. The arm 1 16 is provided with a lateralprojection 53'wh'ich is connected a link 54 to the quadrantmem- 'ber 39 so that an upward swinging move- 0 ment of the arm l6'wil1 operate to raise the quadrant member 39 and thus disconnect the pawlsn J l i I claim: 4
