Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THERON PARK, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO W. O. BOONE, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN FIRE-KINDLERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. [S9,9Ll], dated April 34, 1877; application filed January 22, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THERON PARK, of Brooklyn. in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fire-Kindlers, of which the following is a specification The object of this invention is to ignite fuel by saturating the asbestus, which is surrounded by a wire-gauze, in kerosene or some other combustible fluid, and after having lighted it applying it to the fuel.
In the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, Figure l is an elevation.
Fig. 2 is an elevation, a portion of the covering of wire-gauze 0 being removed so as to show the structure of the cylinder.
The same letters are employed in all the figures in the indication of identical parts.
A is a metal rod supporting a cylinder of asbestos, B, surrounded by a netting ot'wiregauze O. The wire-gauzeO protects the cylinder of asbestos, and prevents it from being broken or otherwise injured. The asbestos, while, by its nature, resisting all action of tire, takes into its pores the fluid, in which it may have been submerged, and holds it ready for combustion.
I am aware that a fire kiudler has been employed in which asbestus is inclosed in acastiron shell; and also inclosed in a cone of spiral wire attached to acast metal cup. My claim is limited to the special construction adopted, which cheapens the production of the article, and provides sufliciently for the protection of the asbestus by merely Wrappingit in a piece of common wiregauze bound around it.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A fire-kindler consisting ofa wrought metal rod, A, attached to a cylinder of asbestus inclosed in a net of reticulated wire-gauze wrapped around the cylinder to protect it from abrasion, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof l have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
THERON PARK.
