This invention relates to match makingmachines oi the type wherein matches are made from a strip or paper-like material such as pasteboard.
$ More particularly, the invention relates to a device for parafining and tipping the match splints after the strip has been slit to form such splints.
in machines of this class, a pasteboard-like m strip is fed through the machine and is slit transverse its length, the slits extending inwardly from opposite edges of the strip and terminating in spaced relation to the longitudinal center line of the strip. Thus a series of match splints are formed at each edge of the strip.
The principal objects of the present invention are to provide a novel and efiicient means for parafining and tipping the free end portions of said splints; to provide a novel means whereby the strip is doubled longitudinally so that the splints at the op posits edges are in such position that both edge portions may be simultaneously dipped in a parafin bath or positioned for tipping; and to regulate by novel means the extent to which said portions are dipped in said parafiu bath.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the details of construction, and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.

the end of this stand near the machine 12 there is provided a pair of bearing standards l5 15 wherein are journalled a lower platen roll 16 and an upper creasing roll 17 so positioned that the strip as it passes between these rolls will be creased on its longitudinal center line. I

Beneath the table at this end are bearings 19 wherein is journalled a shaft 20 driven by any suitable means such as the rbevel gears 21 b which it is operatively connected to a drive shaft 22. Belt pulleys 23 on the shaft 20 and on a journal of the roll 16 areconnected by a belt 24-. so that the platen roll is rotated to. feed the strip 11 in the direction of the ,ar- 7 rows in Figmres 2 and 3. On the table or stand 14 is a tank or vat 25 and secured to the sides of this tank are yokes 26 which straddle the tank. Carried by these yokes is a bar 27 having-upturned ends27' and fixed I to the under side of th s bar is a pair of strip bending members 28 tapered off at their ends. These members form an inverted li-shaped groove below the bar 2?. The upper corners of this plate are rounded oil, as shown in Figure 2. At the end of the table remote from the rolls l6 and 17 is a second pair of bearings 30 wherein are journalled the feed rolls 31, one of which carries a belt pulley 32 driven by a belt 33 from a pulley 34 journalled in bear ings 35. A belt 36 connects the pulley 34 and the pulley 23 on the shaft 20.
The tipping apparatus is somewhat similar, being provided with a stand 37 whereon is a tank 38 carrying yokes 39 which support a bar 40. Beneath this bar-is a pair of bending members 41 of rectangular form and spaced to provide a rectangular roove between them. Shafts 42 are journa led in the sides of the tank '38 and carry concave rolls 43. These shafts are driven from the shaft 22 by bevel gears 44 and a. sprocket and chain mechanism 45.
A parafiin bath 46 is held in the tank 25 and a tipping bath 47 is held in the tank 38.
As the strip is fed forwardly by the roll 16 it is creased down the center and upon reaching the bending members 28 and bend ing plate29 starts to bend downwardly at its edges, as shown in Figure 4, and the bending is continued as shown at Figure 5 so that the ends of the splints dip into the bath 46. The feed rollers 31 carry the strip, which is again flattened, to the tipping bath where the bending operation is repeated but, in this case, the bending bar and strips are so spaced from the bath that the ends of the splints merely roll over the rolls 43 which pick up the tipping or heading composition and apply it to the splints.
it will be noted that the splints are radial or at right angles to'the tangents ofthe profile of the concavity of the rollers.
I claim:
1. A device for araflining strip matches comprising, in com ination with a parafiining bath and guide rollers for movin the match strip over the bath, of a circular ife for scoring the strip longitudinally between the match splint rows, a supporting plate placed edgewise in said bath, and a guide element arranged over said plate and operative to bend the strip over the plate edge for dipping the match splint ends into the bath.
2. In a device of the kind described, a tank, a bar extending longitudinally over the tank, of means formin a bending groove on the under side of the ar, a late vertically alined below the groove an having its upper edge entering said groove, and means for feeding a bendable strip between the upper edge of the plate and the walls of the groove.
3. In a device of -the kind described, a tank, a bar extending longitudinally over the tank, of means forming a bending groove on the under side of the bar, a plate vertically alined below the groove and having its upper edge enterin' said. groove, and means for feeding a benda le strip between the upper edge of the plate and the walls of the groove, said last means including a creasing roller alined with the groove and adapted to crease the bendable strip.
4. In a device of the kind described, a tank, a bar extending longitudinally over the tank, of means forming a bending groove on the under side of the bar, a plate vertically alined below the groove and having its upper edge entering said groove, means for feeding a bendable strip between the upper edge of the plate and the walls of the groove, and feed rollers receiving and flattening the strip after passing the bending means.
