This invention relates to the class of devices known as press buttons, bachelor buttons, snap fasteners, separable fasteners and the like.
An object of the invention is the provision of a device of the indicated character embodying improvements in construction, whereby the parts of the device may be readily attached to the material of a garment or the like, without requiring sewing, and when attached constitute a snap or separable fastener consisting of a female member and a male or stud member, which members cooperate to provide a fastening device of efficient and substantial design.
The nature of the improvements and the distinguishing features and advantages thereof will appear when the following specin fication is read in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a cross sectional view taken through a fastener constructed in accordance with the invention with the members thereof applied to the meeting edge portions of a garment, and the members being engaged to fasten said portions;
Figures 2, 3, 4 and 5 are sectional views of the four main parts of the fastener;
Figure 6 is a perspective view of one of the parts of the stud member;
Figure 7 is a section on the line 7-7 of Figure 2;
Figure 8 is a section of one of the parts of the female member, showing a modification.
Referring now more particularly to the drawing, it will be apparent that the fastener consists of four parts 10,11,12 and 13, respectively, shown in section in Figures 2, 3, 4 and 5. rlhe parts 10 and 11 when brought together on the material constitute the female member of the fastener, and the parts 12 and 13 when brought together on the material the male or stud member of the fastener.
rlhe part 10 consists of two disk sections 14 and 15 and a substantially semi-spherical section 16. These sections are made preferably of metal. The section 14 has a hole 17 centrally thereof. The section 15 has intersecting slits punctured therein to provide gripping means consisting of resilient or spring lingers or teeth 18. The disk sections 14 and 15 are equal in diameter and are laid upon each other. The sections 14 and 15 thus arranged are secured to the section 16 by turning the circular edge thereof over the circumferential edges of the sections 14 and 15 as at 19. The section 15 is disposed on the inside of section 14.
The part 11 consists of a socket section 20 having a flange 21, and a tubular socket section 22 having a flange 23 curved into engagement with the edge of the flange 21 as at 24, to
permanently associate the sections with eachother. The construction is such that both of the vsections 2O and 22 form a socket to receive therein the stud of the cooperative fastener member. Means consisting of bowed springs 25 are adapted to engage the stud of the cooperative fastener. The springs 25 rest on the flange 23 and are held in place by the curled edge thereof. The springs project through slots in the female socket section 22 in cooperative relation. A material penetrating pin or the like 26 projects from the socket section 20 centrally thereof. The flanges 21 and 23 constitute a head for'the part 11.
The member 12 consists of a hollow or tubular stud section 27 having an outwardly directed circular flange 23. The stud section 27 consists of a crown 29 and a neck 30 between the crown 29 and the flange 28. A material penetrating pin or the like 31 is arranged centrally on the crown 29 of the section 27 interiorly of the latter.
The part 13 consists of a. tubular stud section 32 having a circular flange 33 on one end and a disk section 34 has the circumferential edge thereof turned over the corresponding edge of the flange 33 as at 35, thus v These parts are secured to the material of one of the meeting edges 39 and 40, respectively, to be separably fastened together. As shown in Figure 1, the parts l0 and 11 are fastened to the edge 31 by causing the pin 26 to penetrate the material from the inside of the edge 39, and said pin is pressed through the hole 17 of the part 14 and is guided thereby into engagement with the fingers or teeth 18 to grip the pin 26. The teeth 18 resist the withdrawal of the pin. Inthis manner the parts 10 and 11 are securely attached to the edge 89. The part 10 is on the outside of the edge 89 and appears as a button. rlhe parts 12 and 13 are attached to the edge 40. This is accomplished by forming a hole in the edge 40 and'inserting the stud section 32 through the hole. The pin 31 of the part 12 which is arranged on the other side of the edge 40 is forced into engagement with the teeth 38, the latter gripping the pin 8l and holding the same against withdrawal. In this manner the parts 12 and 13 are securely attached to the edge 40. l
From the foregoing it will be apparent that the meeting edges 39 and 40 may be separately fastened together by pressing the stud section 27 into the socket formed by the sections 2O and 22, whereupon the springs 25 will automatically snap around the neclr 30 beneath the crown 29, thus eecting a fastening of the edges39 and 40. The members constituting the fastener may be readily separated, as will be understood.
In Figure 8 of the drawing there has been shown a modification in lieu of the part 11 shown in Figure 3. The said modification consists of a socket 41 having an outwardly directed flange 42 at the entrance of the socket, and the edge of said flange being curled as at 48. A headed member or pin 44 is secured in any practical manner to the socket 41 and projects centrally and eXteriorly therefrom. Stud engaging means consisting of springs 45 are arranged on the flange 42 and are held in place by the curl 43 in relation to the socket 41, the latter having slots to accommodate the body portion of the springs.
l claim:
1. A stud member of a snap fastener comprising two parts, one of said parts having a hollow stud section provided with resilient gripping means, and the other part having a hollow stud section large enough to fit around the first stud section and provided with a material penetrating pin which is engageable with said gripping means to be gripped thereby to attach said parts to the material.
2. A stud member of a snap fastener comprising two parts, one of said parts consisting of a hollow stud section having a flange on one end, a section applied to said flange to form a head and to close one end of said stud section, and a section in the other end of said stud section provided with resilient gripping means; and the other part consisting of a hollow stud section large enough to receive said first stud section and' provided with a flange to cooperate with said head to receive material therebetween, and also provided with a material penetrating pin which is engageable with said gripping means to be @ripped thereby, to attach said parts together with the material clamped between the cooperative flange and head.
3. A stud member of a snap fastener comprising two parts, one of said parts having stud section provided with resilient gripping means, and the other part having a tubular crown stud section which fits on the first stud section, the crown` stud section having material penetrating member which is engageable with said gripping means to be gripped thereby to attach said part-s to the material. 4. A stud member of a snap fastener comprising two parts, one of said parts having a hollow stud section provided' with resilient gripping means on one end, and the other part iaving a tubular stud section which fits on said end, and said second stud section having a central material penetrating member which is engageable with said gripping means to be gripped thereby to attach said parts to the material.
5. A stud member of a snap fastener comprising two component parts, one of said parts haring a tubular stud section provided with resilient gripping means extending transversely thereof, and the other of said parts having a hollow stud section consisting of a crown and neclr` integral with the crown disposable directly on said tubular stud section, and said crown having a material penetrating means which is engageable with said gripping means to be gripped thereby to attach said parts to the material.
6. A stud member of a snap fastener comprising two component parts, one of said parts consisting of a tubular stud section having an outwardly directed flange on one end, and resilient gripping means extending transversely of said section, and the other of said parts having a hollow stud section consisting of a crown and neck integral with the crown and an outwardly directed flange BEN Z.
