Patented Jan. 31, 1933 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE IRVING B. ROWE, OF S'IONINGTON, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO Til AI'WOOD IACEINE COMPANY, 01 STONINGTON, CONNECTICUT, A CORPORATION 0] NEW JERSEY WINDING CHINE Application am April as,
My invention consists in a double deck.
winding machine in which there is provided means for preventing the loose end of a broken thread on the winding spool for one deck being thrown over and becoming wound onto the winding spool for the other deck.
My invention more particularly comprises a series of thread guards, as for instance guard plates located between the inner and outer rows of winding spools for the two decks, said guard plates being carried by the bearing brackets for the winding spools; a guard plate being located between each pair of inner and outer spools and their pair of bearing brackets.
A practical embodiment of my invention is represented in the accompanying drawing in which:
Fig. 1 represents a detail top plan view of a double deck winding machine showing one of the double spool winding units with my spool separating guard plate in position therein.
Fig. 2 represents a vertical cross section taken in the plane of the line IIII of Fig. 1.
The usual pair of upper and lower longitudinal side bars 1 and 2 of the winding machine frame have brackets 3 secured at intervals thereto for rotatably supporting the shaft 4 for the friction winding wheels 5.
These longitudinal side bars also have brackets 6 secured thereto at the proper distances apart for receiving between each two brackets a pair of inner and outer winding spools 7 and 8, the rows of inner and outer winding spools in the present instance being designed to wind respectively the threads from the upper and lower decks of Swifts (not shown).
The ends of the inner and outer spindles 9 and 10 of each pair of inner and outer Winding spools are rotatably mounted in bearings 11 and 12 respectively, in the inner and outer arms 13 and 14 of levers rotatably adjustable on arms 15 uprising fromthe bracket 6 so that the heads 16 and 17 of said spindles will properly rest upon their friction winding wheel 5. In the present instance each lever is pivoted at 18 to the uprising bracket arm 1931. serial Io. 532,771.
15 and a clamp bolt 19 asses through the lever and a concentric e ongated slot 20 in the arm 15 and is provided with anut 21 for securing the lever in its proper rotative ad ustment.
The means which I have provided for separating the inner and outer winding spools of each pair is shown as a guard plate 22 secured at each side thereof at its lower edge to one of a pair of op ositely pro'ectmg lateral ears 23 on the racket 6. is guard plate projects upwardly and forwardly over the outer spool 8 and effectually separates the two spools and thus prevents the loose end of a broken thread from being thrown over from one spool into a position where it would be wound onto the other spool.
This guard late is shown as having a recess 24 for the ree passage therethrough of the peripher of the friction winding wheel 5, thus ena ling the lower edge of the guard plate to be brought well down between the inner and outer winding spools.
The bracket 6 is shown as supporting at its outer end the traverse bar 25 and as supporting on an uprising arm 26 at its inner end the traverse bar 27 for the upper deck or inner winding s ools.
It is evident t at various changes may be resorted to in the construction, form and I arrangement of the several parts without 7 2. In a winding machine, a friction wind-- ing wheel, inner and outer horizontally disposed winding s ools driven thereby, a pair of brackets forming bearing supports for the spools, and an upwardly and forwardl projecting guard plate located between t e inner and outer winding spools and their pair of an rting brackets, said ard late being s c ed at each side therg f at its lower edge to its adf'slcent bracket.
3. In a win g machine, a friction wind- 6 ing wheel, inner and outer horizontally diswindin spools driven thereby, a pair of brackets orming bearing sup rts for the spools, and an upwardly and orwardly projecting guard plate located between the 10 inner and outer winding spools and their Eeair of supporting brackets, said guard plate ing secured at each side thereof at its lower edge to its adjacent bracket, the guard tKlate having a recess for the/free passage ere- 15 through of the periphery of the said windin wheel, to permit the ard plate to be locates well down between t e inner and outer windi spools.
testimony, that I claim the foregoing as 20 my invention, I have signed my name this 22nd day of April, 1931.
. IRVING R. RQWE.
