V The present invention relates more particularly to means for reducing or checking the speed of side doors for railway car's,known as box or house cars, when the doors approach theend of their travel.
It is a rule of the railroads that house cars are not to be shifted or started in transit un- W less the doors forsaid 'carsare latched. In
spite of this rule trainmen frequently handle house cars in a careless manner, resulting in damage to the cars and consequent loss to the railroads when movement of cars is begun without latching of. the doors thereon. Whenthe doors are in closed orpartially closed position, sudden forward movement of the cars causes'the doors to move rearwardly with such speed as to exert a great force of impacton the back stops for the doors. When it is considered that steel (10015 weigh between four hundred (400) and six hundred (600) pounds the force of this impact will be appreciated. As a consequence stops the latter have frequentlybeen sheared off the car,,the doorhas been damaged and other serious injury has resulted.
This invention has for .one of its objects 7 a construction'whereby the above mentioned defects are obviated.

A door opening'll is provided in the side wall, said opening being adapted to be closed by a door-12. In its closed position the door is adapted to be ifastened to the car by fastening means designated generally by the reference numeral 13. Supporting thedoor for horizontal sliding movement are a plurality of hangers 14, one hanger being se cured adjacent each of the lower corners of the door. Each of these hangers isp'rovided with a pair of rollers15 and 16. .The roller 15 is rotatably mounted on a pin-l7,'fixedly 0 i secured in hubs 19 and 20, forming a part of 7 peened head-27, and shoulder 28, formed on the hanger. The roller 16, which is of less diameter than the roller 15, is rotatably mounted on a pin l8,secured in a hub 22,'and in one Wall of a housing 25, forming part of the hanger. It will be noted that the roller 15 is positioned between two-relatively offset walls of the hanger so that, in effect, it is maintained within a housing 21 in said hanger. The hub 22, as well as the housing 25, is formed as part of a flange or plate depending from the housing 21. 'The pin 17 for the roller 15 is fastened to the hub 19 by means of a pin 26, while the pin 18 for the roller 16, is secured in position between the said pin. - A supplemental track 39 is provided, which consists in the embodiment shown, of an anglemember having one'of its, legs 42 positioned vertically and the other positioned horizontally. The supplemental track is supticalleg of the main track by meansof the 'rivets38 and shown in Figure'6 of the drawings. "The horizontal leg tOof the supplemental track has its upper surface inclined as shown at 41 in Figure 3 of the drawings.
Supported upon the-horizontal leg 44- of the channel sill 43 is the flooring 46. This flooring projects somewhat beyond the web of the sill and is protected by the horizontal portion 47 0f a protecting plate which is downturned asindicated at 48, over the edge its vertical-upstanding leg to the. vertical I of the fiooring. Door stops 49, 49, etc. are positioned as shown to prevent the door from leaving the track in its opening movement.
Figure 7 illustrates a modification of the invention. In this modification a top supported door is employed. This door is adapted to travel upon the horizontal leg 56 of the track 54. The track is secured through depending leg 52 of the Z shapedside plate 50 by rivets or the like 58. The web 53 of the side plate is positioned horizontally and the other leg 51'extends vertically opposite to zontal leg 32, which supports theroller di-.

The supplemental rollers, together-with the supplemental'tracks, constitute the door checking means. 7 The operation of this meanswill be made clear from the following:
Assuming the door to be in closed position,
and desiring to open the door, the latch is released and the door moved toward the right in Figure 1 of the drawings. During the greater portion of-athis 1novement the door will be supported upon the main rollers 15. Norinal movement of the doorwill continu'eupon the rollers 15 until the supplemental/roller 16', carried byithe-hanger at theright of the door 12, comes into engagement with the sup plemental track 39, Continued movementof the door will cause the roller 16 to ride-up the. inclined, portion of the supplemental track.
This movement of the roller '16'on the inclined portion causes the door and the main roller to be raised. The main rollers is now ineffective to support the door and the'supplem'ental roller carries the door'onthe in clined track. The supplementalroller, however, is smaller in diameter than the'main' roller and this fact, together with the fact that the supplemental roller'is riding up an inclined plane," will bring about 'a' checking or reductionin the speedof the door; As a. result'of this, possibility of shearing oft-he back stops 49, 419, etcwith its attendant difii- 1 'culties, will be obviated. While the reducing mechanism has been shown located so that it becomes effectivein' the openingmovement of the door, it is apparent it-may be employed so as to be effective in the closing movement of the door as well. i

I claim 1.. Check means for the horizontally'slid 'ing. door of a box car, said door being-sup ported on a track by means of hangers provided with rollers, comprising an auxiliary roller provided on said door and an inclined portion provided on said track, the inclined portion comprising an angular member secured to the track and embodying a horizontal flange the upper surface of which is inclined, said auxiliary roller having engagetional roller being inoperative during the ment with the inclined portion of the track durin a part of the movement of the door.

Check means for the horizontally sliding door of a house car, said door being supported on a track by means of hangers provided with rollers, comprising an auxiliary roller and aninclined portion provided on said track,said inclined portion comprising ahorizontal flange secured to said track and positioned below the roller supporting part of the track, the upper surface of said flange being inclined upwardly in the direction of the opening movement of the door, said auxiliary roller and said horizontal flange adapted for engagement to check the speed of the door.
4. The combination with the door of a house car, the door being supported for horizontal sliding movement upon a main track by rollers carried by hangers secured to said door, of check means for said door, comprising a roller of smaller diameter than the supporting rollers and carried by said door,
adjacent to one of said supporting rollers, auxiliary track means secured to said main track and provided with an inclined portion, said smaller roller having engagement with said inclined portion of the auxiliary track means for a part of the movement of the door, whereby to lift the door to disengage the said adjacent supporting roller from the main track and to support the door on the auxiliary track by the smaller roller.

A door check for the horizontally sliding door of a railway car, comprising a hanger, said hanger being provided witha' housing, a roller mounted in saidhousing, a plate depending from said housing, said plate being provided with a housing, a roller mounted in said second housing, and smaller in diameter than said first mentioned roller; and an upwardly inclined, elongated member adapted forengagement with said smaller roller.
