This invention relates to locks.
It is directed to the type of lock generally described in my co-pending applications No. 252,972 filed February 9th, 1928 and No. 346,- 941, filed March 14th, 1929 wherein a plurality of bolts are projected in a plurality of directions.
An object of this invention is to provide a new and improved lock which is in effect a padlock for a door, and wherein one of the legs of the U-shaped bolt coacts with mechanism mounted on the door and the other leg is adapted to cooperate with the strike on the door jamb.
Another object of this invention is 'to provide in a lock .of the character` described wherein a horizontal bolt and a vertical bolt are simultaneously moved, means for simultaneously projecting the horizontal bolt and ret-racting the vertical bolt for moving said bolts into locking position.
Another object of this invention is to provide a lock of the character described adapted to be mounted on a door and having means for simultaneously projecting bolts horizontally and vertically into engagement with a strike on the door j amb, the vertical bolts being arranged for movement inwardly toward each other for engaging said strike and movement outwardly away from each other for disengaging from said strike.
A further object of this invention is to provide in a device of the character described, wherein vertically movable bolts project beyond the outer edge of the door, means for moving said bolts inwardly of the said outer edge upon opening the lock whereby the bolts extend beyond the door only when said door is locked. thus obviating the danger of accidental injury to bystanders from the projecting portions of the bolts.
Another object of this invention is to provide a neat, compact and rugged lock of the character described which shall comprise few and simple parts, be of economical construction, smooth and positive in operation and practical and efficient to a high degree.
Certain features shown and described in my co-pending applications No. 252,972 filed Feb. 9th, 1928 and No. 346,941 filed March 14th, 1929 are shown and describedbut not claimed in this application.

The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements, and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter described, and of which the scope yof application will be indicated kin the following claims.

Referring now in detail to the drawings, 10 designate a door hinged as at 11'to a wall`12 and having a vertical edge portion 13 extending adjacent the door j amb 14e-when said door is in closed position. Attached to the door adjacent said edge portion 13 is a lock 15 comprising in general, a casing 16 having a horizontal bolt 17 and vertically movable bolts 18 and 19. Said bolts are adapted to engage, in the manner hereinafter appearing, a strike 21 Xed to the door jamb 14T. The
j casing 16 comprises a front wall 25, upper and lower walls 26, and 27, and end walls 28 and 29, the end wall 29 being substantially flush with the edge portion 13 of the door 10.
VThe walls 26 and 27 may be provided with ears 26a and 27a respectively, bored as at 265, 27 b for receiving securing means of any suitable construction for fixing the casing to the door. Said casing 16 is provided with guide means for slidably mounting said horizontal bolt 17. For this purpose, said casing is formed with a pair of spaced, parallel, horizontal walls 35 and 36 contacting the upper and lower sides 17a and 17 b respectively, of said bolt 17 A rear backing plate 39 secured to boss 40 integrally formed with said casing, is adapted to pressagainst the inner face 17d of'said bolt for retaining the same in position within the casing. For reciprocating said bolt 17 into and out of locking position, the front wall 25 of the casing is provided with a boss 45, bored as at 46 for rotatably receiving a knob 47. Fixedly attached to said knob within said casing, is one end of a crank arm 49, the opposite end of said crank arm being formed with an opening 51 for pivotallyY receiving one end 52 of a curved link or connecting member 53. The latter may be downwardly curved as shown at 53a in Fig. 1, the opposite end 54 thereof being provided with a pin 55 pivotally engaging the horizontal bolt 17.
It will now be understood that rotation of the knob 47 will cause movement of the arm 49 and connecting member 53 for translating the bolt 17. For actuating the bolt 17 from the outside of the door, as for inst-ance by use of a key, a crank arm 57 is pivotally mounted on the rear plate 39 and provided with means (not shown) adapted to cooperate with a key for turning said arm. Said arm 57 is provided'with a cylindrical' projection 58 rotatably received in a socket portion 59 integral'- ly formed with said connecting arm 53. Said bolt 17 for the purpose hereinafter appearing, is substantially of T-shaped cross-section and is providedV withL oppositely extending vertical walls 31, 31a and a horizontal portion 32. The front wall 29 of said casing 16 is provided with a T-sha-ped opening 32a to permit said bolt 17 to be projected from the casing. The strike 21 is .provided with a wall 22 adapted to be fastenedr to the door amb by any suitable securing. means. Integrally formed withsaid wall 22 is a casing portion 23 having a rea-r wall 23a and front. opening 23?), preferably T-shaped, for receiving the bolt 17. For the purpose hereinafter appearing, said strike 21 is furthermore provided with a pair of oppositely extending tubular ' portions 24, 24a.
The vertically movable bolts 18 and 19 are preferably of U-shape, and are provided with portions 18a and 19a respectively, receivable in aligned, tubular portions 60, 61
integrally formed with the casing 16 andproj ect-ing outwardly from the side walls 26 .and 27 respectively thereof. Each of said bolts 18 and 19 are formed with horizontal portions 18?) and 19?) extending fromV said portions 18a and 19a and adapted'to project beyond the edge 13 of said= door into overlapping relation with respect to said door jamb and with aligned vertical inwardly extending legs 180 and 190 respectively, parallel to said portions 18aand 19a. The end portions 18d and 19d of said legs 180, 190 respectively are adapted to be moved in the manner hereinafter appearing into and out of engagement of the tubular portions 24, 24a respectively of the strike 21. Means is provided for projecting the verticalbolts 18 and 19 out of engagement withthe strike 21 simultaneously with the retraction of the horizontal bolt 17, and for retracting the vertical bolts into engagement with said strike, simultaneously with the projection of said bolt 17. To this end the tubular members 60 and 61 are preferably of rectangular cross-section for slidably-and non-rotatably receiving the legs 18a and 19a' of the-bolts 18 and'19. Said legs 18a-and19a are provided with hollow tubular portions 62 and 63 formed with internal double-helical, diametrically disposed steep pitched threads or ribs 62a, 63a. Received within the hollow of each of said portions 62 and 63 are rods 64, 65 respectively, each having helical grooves 64a, 65a respectively cooperating with said threads or ribs 62a, 63a. Said threads 62a, of bolt 18 are turned oppositely to the direction of threads 63a, of .bolt 19, whereby rotation of said rods 64, 65- in the same direction will cause movement of said bolts 18, 19 in opposite directions. Said rods 64, 65, terminate at the innerends thereof in reduced portions 67,' 68, the collars 69 and 70 being attached to said portions, as by said screws 69a, 70a respectively. Said' reduced portions 67 and 68 and collars 69 and 7 O project into the longitudinal recesses 71 and 7 2 formed-by vertical walls 31 and 31a and horizontal wall 32 of said bolt 17 Said collars 69 and'70 may be provided with a plurality of annularly arranged spaced openings 74, 75 respectively. A plurality of aligned pins 76, and 77 received in bores 76a, 77a formed in saidwalls 31, 32 project into said longitudinal recesses-71V, 72 for cooperating with the collars 69, 70. Said pins 76, 77 and collar openings 74, 75 are so arranged that said pins project into said openings upon movement.l of the bolt 17, the pins thereby causing rotation ofz the rods 64, 65. Thus said pins and collars cooperate in the manner of racks and pinions for turning the rods 64, 65. Rotation of the rods 64, 65 obviously will cause longitudinal movement inwardly or outwardly, of the bolts 18 or 19, depending upon the direction of rotation. The directions of the cooperating helical threads 62a, 64a and 63a, 65a respectively is such that upon movement of the horizontal bolt 17 for projecting the same from the casing 16, the bolts 18 and 19 willbe retracted or moved inwardly whereby the end portions 18d, 19d will engage the strike portions 24, 24a.
It will be noted that due to the fact that the U-shapedy bolts 18, 19 are retracted or moved inwardly toward the horizontal axis of the lock casing for locking the door, the strike 21 receiving both the horizontally and vertically movable bolts may be made of compact construct-ion, preferably of a single piece, the entire lock furthermore necessitating less space and being neat and compact in construction.
It 'will be noted that the lock described herein functions as a padlock wherein one of the legs of each of the U-'shaped bolts 18, 19 coacts with mechanism mounted on the door and the other leg cooperates with the strike on the door jamb.
In the modified construction shown in Figs. and 6, means is providedfor swinging the vertically movable bolts about a vertical aXis inwardly of the outer edge of the door upon opening the lock, so `that when the door is open, no portion of the lock shall project beyond said door, thus preventing the possibility of accidental injurv to persons standing near the door. To this end, as shown in Fig. 5, the lock 100 is provided with projecting mechanism similar to mechanism shown in Fig. 1. The U-shaped bolts 101, however, are preferably made of cylindrical stock, the hollow leg portions 102 thereof being received in the cylindrical bores 103 formed in the outwardly extending tubular portion 104: of the lock casing. Said hollow portions 102 are formed with internal steep pitched ribs or helical threads adapted to coact with the threadec grooves of rods k105 in the manner similar to the cooperation described hereinabove for the corresponding structure shown in Figs.. 1, 2, 3. and Ll. The tubular portions 104` however are each formed with a longitudinal groove 106 and with substantially semiecylindrical annular, internal groove 107, one end of said annular groove communicating with said longitudinal groove 106. Integrally formed with said bolts 101 is a radially extending pin 108 adapted to project into said grooife 107. Figs. 5 and 6 of the drawings illustrate the position of the bolts 101 when the lock is open. In this position, bolts 101 are swung inwardly of the outer edge 13 of the door 10. Upon turning the knob 47 in a direction for closing the lock, the rods 105 will be rotated in the ordinary manner. Due to the engagement of the pins 108 however, in the grooves 107, vertical movement of the bolts 101 will not be possible. The rods 105 will therefore merely rota-te the bolts 101 to the dotted line position of Fig. 5 where the pins 108 strike the end portions 110 of said annular grooves 107. Further rotation of the bolts 101 will not be possible, and continued rotation of the rods 105 will cause coaction of the threads on said rods and bolts for drawing the bolts inwardly toward each other for engagement with the strike 112. Obviously,
the collar members 113 attached to the members 105, as well as the mechanism for rotating said collars, may be proportioned to provide for rotation of the rods 105 through a sufficient angle tolpermit rotation of the bolts 101 through 180o and the retraction of the bolts for engagement with the strike. Upon turning vthe knob L17 in the direction for opening the lock, vrotation of the rods 105 will project the vertical bolts 101 since rotation of said bolts cannot take place due to the coaction of the pins 108 within the longitudinal grooves 106. However, when said pins strike the outer ends 115 of said longitudinal grooves 106, further projection of the bolts cannot take place and continued ro` tation of said rods 105, will obviously rotate the bolts about a vertical axis back to the position shown inffull lines in Fig. 5. During this rotation, obviously, the nin 108 will move within the groove 107 until said pin strikes the end 116 of saidv groove. Thus 'a single ordinary turning movement of the knob 47 or key mechanism for opening or closing the lock will cause both a vertical-.movement of the Vbolts andswinging or pivotal movement thereof. i l
In accordance with the modified construction shown in Figs. 5 and 6, the outer tubular portions 117 of the strike receiving the cylindrical end portions 118 of the bolts 101 are likewise cylindrical. It will be understoodthat by merely reversing the position of wall portions 31, 31a of the bolt 17 and the direction of the pins 76, "7, the collars 113 engaging said pins, and the rods 105 may be rotated in the proper direction for swinging'I the bolts 101.
It will thus be seen that there is provided a. device in which the several objects of this invention are achieved, and which is well adapted to meet the conditions of practical use.

Having thus described my invention I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

In a lock, in combination, a casing adapted to be mounted on a door, a pair of oppositely disposed U-shaped bolts, each having a leg` slidably mounted in and extending from said casing, strike means adapted for attachment to the door j amb having portions for engagement with said other leg of each of said bolts, and means formoving said bolts inwardly toward one another for engaging said other legs of said bolts with said strike'.
19. In a lock, in combination, a casing, a horizontal bolt mounted thereon, a pair of symmetrical U-shaped vertical bolts, each having the leg received Within said casing, strike means, and means for simultaneously projecting said horizontal bolt from said casing and retracting said legs of said vertical bolts into said casing for moving said vertical bolts inwardly toward one another into engagement with said strike means.
20. In a lock, a casing, a horizontal bolt, a pair of identical, symmetrically disposed, vertical U-shaped bolts, and means for projecting said horizontal bolt from said casing, and moving said U-shaped bolts inwardly toward one another, strike means adapted to be engaged by said horizontal bolt and by end portions of said vertical bolts, said portions of said vertical bolts being out of engagement with respect to said horizontal bolt when said lock is in locking position.
