UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WARREN H. TAYLOR, OF STAMFORD, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE YALE LOCK MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN STOCK FOR THE MANUFACTURE OF KEYS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 189,520, dated April 10, 1877; application filed February 26, 1877.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WARREN H. TAYLOR, of Stamford, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Metallic Blank for Use in the Manufacture of Keys, of which the followingis a specification that will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
The object of my invention is to economically produce blanks that may be employed with facility to form a key-stem and bit or wing for that class of keys invented by me, in which a sheet-metal shank and bow are made separate, and then united to the stem and bit, which are preferably made of one piece of metal, and of one of my blanks.
One mode in which I form my blanks is to roll or draw out metal bars or stock, such as shown by Figure 1, of the form in cross-section shown by Fig. 2, and then cut from them sections of suitable length, such as shown by Fig. 3, which sections constitute solid blanks of the form desired-that is to say, blanks which are each composed of a wire or cylindrical part suitable for a key-stem, with a flat part or web projecting from one side of it suitable for a key-bit.
Another mode in which I make my blanks is to cut or stamp plates from sheet metal, of the form shown by Figs. 4 and 5, and then fold and compress them into the form of my blank.
The plate shown by Fig. 4 is to be folded in the middle, and that shown by Fig. 5 is to be folded on one side.
The outlines of these sheet-metal blanks, when finished, are the same as those of the solid sections or blanks cut from drawn or rolled stock, and the blanks are, in fact, when folded, practically solid, and serve the same purpose in the manufacture of keys. These blanks, by whatever mode of manufacture formed, may be made of any desired size, and may be stamped or trimmed to perfect the stem and bit, and leave the latter shorter than the former. The plates shown by Figs. 4 and 5 should be cut from strips of sheet metal of suitable width, and before they are cut ofl the strips may, if desired, be rolled or creased in any suitable way to initiate and to facilitate the folding in the formation of the blank.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A blank for the manufacture of key-stems and bits, of the form shown and described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name.
WARREN H. TAYLOR.
