This invention relates to separable fasteners adapted to removably secure together the partsof gloves, pocket-books, and the like,
H and relates particularly to the means for a permanently securing the socket in place in I the material. against detachment. Difficulty has been experienced with socketszof the type here involved in that the socket tends to work its way out of the material through the hole in the material through which thesocket ispassed. After a period, by reason of the enlargement of the hole due to the stretching of the material'under the strain and stress of use, the socket frequently becomes detached and its useful life ended.
My invention contemplates the provision of simple and efficient means to prevent such detachment of the socket even after repeated use. My invention further contemplates the provision of means such as prongs on the socket for firmly gripping and holding on to the leather or other material to which the socket is applied, to adequately fix the'socket to the material, and which means requires 5 no additional labor in assembling the parts but which is designed to be assembled into its operative position and simultaneously with the assembly of the socket parts with ease and rapidity.
My invention further contemplates the rovision of means for insuring the bending of the holding prongs and thereby more firm ly securing the parts in place.
The various objects of my invention will be clear from the description which follows, and from the drawing in which.

In that practical embodiment of my invention which Ihave illustrated by way of example, my improved socket is preferably made of two pieces. One piece takes the form of a combined cap and anvil member, and the other takes the form of a flanged eyelet comprising the socket member. The unflanged or eyelet end of the socket member is forced into the interior of the anvil memher to hold the members together with the material compressed between the flange of V the socket member and the rim of the anvil ter member for the purposes above-mentioned.
As is well known,andas is shown in the patent to Lues Beiter for glove fastener, dated March 2nd,- 1920, No. 1,332,754, the flange of the socket member is usually arranged on one face of the material, and the eyelet portion of the socket member passed through a hole in the material. The anvil member is arranged on the other side or face of the material and the members pressed together in the direction of their axes to attach the members together and to the material, part of the eyelet portion being spread 95 and distorted by the anvil member to serve as a clinch joint for the members.
Referring now to Figs. 1 and 2, I have there illustrated a combined anvil and cap member- 10, the lowermost portion of which serves as 10 a socket cap. A rim as 11 is bent upwardly and inwardly from the cap portion. As shown, the rim is divided by aser'es of preferably radial slits 31 into a plurality of teeth 12 extending toward, but terminatin outwardly of, the central opening 13 in the cap portion. The rim 11 is suiiiciently spaced from the cap portion to provide an annular space 14 therebetween for the receptionand distortion of the lowermost portion 15 of the socket member 16, in a manner customary in the art. Certain of said teeth, however, are
bent upwardly and bevelled at their outer ends as 17, and pointed to provide the upstanding prongs 18. As shown, three of said prongs in spaced relation to each other are provided though it will be understood that as many prongs as may be desired may be so bent from the teeth 12.
The socketmember 16 comprises theliange 19 adapted to rest againstthe surface 20 of the piece of material 21, which may be leather, fabric or the lilro. The eyelet portion 15 of the socket member is first passed through the opening 22 of the material 211, thereby coming in contact with the upper surface of the anvil portion of the cap 10, after the anvil member and the socket member have been ranged on opposite sides of the material. A i;- ial pressure of said members toward each other thereby causes the eyelet portion to follow the curve of he anvil portion and to spread outwardly. At the same time, the prongs 18 are forced through the material 21 and therebv not only prevent rotation of thevthus assembled socket relatively tov the material, but further prevent enlargement of the hole 2'2 under the stress put upon the socket, when the cooperating stud 23is inserted therein and withdrawn. ll be As shown in Fig. 4E, owing to the use of com paratively thin material 27.,the prongs 1n strike the flange 19 of the socketwhen the parts are forced together during the assembly operation, causing the prongs to bend out of their initial positions. Unless thepr'on gs are given predetermined bias inwardly or outwardly, as is unnecessary since it is immaterial in most cases in which direction the prongs are bent, said prongs may bend'either deflection of the prongs so that said'prongs are-firmly imbedded n the material without penetrating the socket flange.
As has been indicated, the combined anvil and cap member may be made with a central hole as 13 therein, if desired, or imperforate and closed as at 26. It will be understood that if desired, the teeth-formin g slits or slots 81 in the rim of the anvil member may be omitted, and that only such slits made in pairs as to permit the bending up of the prongs 18, as shown in Fig. 8.

While I have shown and described certain specific embodiments of mv nvention, 1 do not wish to be understood as limiting myself thereto,.butdes1re to claim my invention as broadly asmay be permitted by the state of the prior art and the scope of the appended claims. 7
I claim:
1. In a fastener socket, a one-piece sheet metal anvil member having a cap portion and an integral anvil portion forming one face thereof, and having an integral rim portion opposed to the cap portion forming the other face thereof and surrounding an opening,
said rim portion being bent from thecap por 7 tion to provide an annular space between the cap portion and the rimportion for the reception of a socket, member, and said rim portion having a plurality 'of slits therein, and a plurality of upstanding prongs integral with and bent from the, material between the slits of said rim portion and arranged in outwardly spaced relation to the opening.
2. In a separable fastener installation, a flexible sheet, a one-piece socket member provided with an annular flange arranged on one socket member, said combined anvil and cap member having an integral rim thereon opposed to the remainder thereof, said rim being provided with a central opening and with marginal teeth surrounding the opening, and bendable integral prongs on said rim extending into the sheet toward the flange and in outwardly spaced relation to the Wall of the opening in the rim to. maintain the fastener against removal from the sheet.
3. In a socket, a one-piece combined anvil and cap member having an integral annular rim provided with an opening and with a series of pairs of slits in outwardly spaced relation to the opening and a bendable prong integral with and bent from the material of the rim between each pair of slits and thereby providing a hole in the rim adjacent the prong.
4. A two-piece socket installation. comprising a piece of flexible material, a combined one-piece cap and anvil member having a series of slits in the rim thereof, a socket member directly interlocked with and engaging said combined cap and anvil member and passing through a hole in said material and means for anchoring the socket to the material and for resisting enlargement of the hole, comprising a plurality of outstanding spaced prongs'integral with the combined cap and anvil member and bent from the material of the rim between the slits thereof to leave spaces in the rim.
5. In a two-piece socket installation, a sheet of flexible material, a one-piece tubular socket member having a flange arranged on one side of the sheet and having a tubular portion passed through an opening in the sheet, a onepiece combined cap and anvil member havin an opening therein for the passage of sai tubular portion and arranged on the other side of the sheet, said combined cap and anvil member having marginal teeth and being adapted to distort the end portion of said socket member when said members are, forced together with the sheet therebetween, and pointed means integral withthe anvil member and arranged between the teeth and outwardly beyond the opening therein and entering the material to prevent enlargement of the opening.
6. In a two-piece socket installation, a flexible sheet, a socket member, a flange on said member provided with an annular bead, sheet metal means for receiving and distorting part of said member, and spaced outstanding prongs on said means adapted to engage said bead and to be bent thereby when said means and said memberare assembled on opposite sides of said sheet to form the socket.

In a socket, a one-piece flanged socket member, and. a one-piece pronged member adapted to receive and distort part oft-he socket member and having an opening therein, said pronged member havingaclosed outermostface to serve as a closed cap for the socket member, and beingprovided with spaced prongs extending. therefrom and formed from the marginal portion thereof surrounding the opening by bending up. the material between a series of pairs of spaced cuts each terminating at said opening.
10. In a socket, a flanged socket member, a projection in the flange of said member, and a pronged anvil member adapted to receive and distort partfof the socket member to secure said members together, the prongs of said anvil member being adapted to engage the projection and to be diverted thereby out of their initial positions on the entry of the socket member into the anvil member to a sufiicient extent.
11. A one-piece anvil member for a socket comprising a cap portion, a rim portion integral with the cap portion and provided with a central opening for the passage of a socket, said rim portion being bent upwardly and inwardly from the cap portion, said rim portion being provided with a series of pairs of slits therein extending outwardly from the opening, and integral prongs on the rim bent upwardly from the material between each of the pairs of slits and thereby arranged in outwardly spaced relation to the opening.
12. In a two-piece socket installation, a sheet of flexible material having an opening therein, a one-piece anvil member arranged onvone side of the sheet and having a cap portion and thereby serving also as a cap, a rim integral with and bent upwardly and inwardly from the cap portion through an angle of more than 180 and providing an Wall surrounding'the opening in the sheet to prevent enlargement of said opening under stresses put upon said installation, and a onepiece socket member provided with an annular flange and With a continuous unslitted tubular portion depending from and integral with the flange, approximately half of said tubular portion passing through the opening in the sheet and into said annular space and F being deformed bythe cap portion and the anvil portion when the socket member and anvil member are forced together With the sheet therebetween to lock said members together and to simultaneously force said prongs into the sheet.
13. In a two-piece socket installation, a sheet of flexible material, a one-piece socket member passing through the sheet and provided With a tubular portion and a flange, an
annular. bead in the flange, a one-piece combined cap and anvil member having integral marginal teeth: therein and a series of prongs formed from spaced 1 teeth and passing through the sheet in outward spaced relation to thetubular portion and bent by said bead When the socket member is forced into the anvil member and distorted and thereby locked thereto With the sheet therebetween.
14. In a socket, a one-piece anvil comprising'a cap portion, a rim portion opposed to the cap portion, bent inwardly therefrom and opposed thereto, said rim portion having a series of slits therein, and integral prongs on the rim portion bent from the material of the (357 rim portion between the slits.
