DETROIT, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO CORPORATION, OF DETBOIT,'MICHIGAN, A CORPORATION OF MICHIGAN APPA ATUS FOR FORMING MOLDS Application filed April 7,
The invention relates to the forming of molds of molding material, such as sand and the like, and refers more particularlyto the method of and apparatus for forming these molds. One of the objects of the invention is to provide an improved method of compacting the/molding materiai to uniformly compact this material, Another object is to so construct the apparatus that it will uni-- formly compact the molding material and it may be operated to secure higliproduction of uniformlygood molds. A further object is to so construct the apparatus that the table for supporting the pattern and flask may be jolted to compact the molding material and may be rolled over tofacilitate remo-valof the pattern from the mold. Still other objects reside in the novel features as more fully hereinafter set forth. 7
In the drawing I Figure'l is a front elevation, partly in section, of an apparatus illustrating an embodimentof my invention Figure 2 is an end view thereof;
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the gauging frame for the molding material.
The mold jolting and ramming apparatus has the frame 1 upon which is'vertically reciprocably mounted the jolt table 2 guided by suitable means such as the guidepins 3'extending vertically upward from the frame and slidably engaging bushings 4 in the jolt table. 5 is the table for supporting the pattern 6 and the flask 7, this table being located above the jolt table 2 and having at its ends the upwardly extending arms 8, each of which is provided at its upper end with the 9 engaging in the vertically extending slot in the adjacent trunnion 10, which extends above the adjacent end of the frame 1 and is vertically reciprocable relative thereto. This table 5 is of'the roll-over type, it being adapted to be swung about its trunnion pins. The base 11 of this table is adapted to be engaged by the jolt table 2 to jolt and ram or compact the mold- .ing material or sand within the flask. For
j olting the table 2, there is the jolt piston 12, which is verticall reciprocable within the cylinder 13, the piston and cylinder prefer- 19a. Serial No. 442,331.
ably having an arrangementsuch as shown in my co-pending application Serial Num ber 412,876.
For the purpose of providing a'predetermined excess of molding material or sand for the mold and uniformly ramming or compacting this material in the mold, I have pro vided the frame 14, which is adapted'to rgis ter with the upper edge of the flask 7 and has a predetermined thickness, so that this frame gauges a predeterminedexcess of material.
This frame is placed'upon the flask 7 prior.
BOHN ALUMINUM & BRASS to ii'llingthe flask with the molding material and sufficient molding material is heaped up above the flask so that after the molding material has been jolted and thereby rammed or compacted,'this molding material still extends above the upper face of the frame so 7 that the amount thereabove may be struck. or levelled 01f by asuitable striker sliding along the upper face of the frame.
To further'compact the molding material, the frame 14 is removed from the flask 7 after the molding material has been struckor levelled oif and then the bottomboard l5 is placed upon the predetermined excess of the molding material. yieldably urged against the molding material under a substantially constant pressure by means of the clamping. members 16, each of which is channel-shaped and has an upper leg engageable over the board and a lower leg extending inwardly below the side edge of the base 11 of the table 5. Eachclamp is adapted to be urged in a downward direction by means of the piston rod 17 abutting at its lower end the lower flange of the clamp and secured at its upper end to the piston; 18,
-which is slidable within the cylinder 19.
Each cylinder- 19 is securedat its upper end to the base 11 of the table 5 and depends therefrom and this upper'end is cl-osedbut provided with a portQO connected to a suit- This bottom board is Y under a substantially constant pressure, even during the jolting operation, which occurs while the board is thus urged.
It will also-be seen that by reason of this arrangement the excess of molding material will be vforced into the flask and :since it is equally distributed over the area of the flask, the molding material will be additionally rammed or compacted substantially evenly throughout the flask area. 7
WhatI claim as my invention is:
1. In a mold jolting apparatus, the combination with a table for supporting a pattern and flask with molding'material in the flask extending beyond the latter, a board en,- gageable with the molding material, and means for jolting the table, of means for yieldably urging theboard against the molding materialextending beyond the flask during operation of the jolting means to compact the molding material within the flask and to clamp the flask to the table.
2 In a mold jolting apparatus, the com bination with atable for supporting a pattern and flask, a board, and means for jolting' the table, of cylinders mounted upon said table and adapted to receive a pressure medium, pistons slidable within said cylinders, andclamping members engageable with the board when placed upon the moldingmaterial and actuated by the pistons for clamping board against the molding material.
"3. .In a mold jolting and ramming apparatu's, the combination with a table for sup-- 35 porting a pattern and flask with molding material in the flask extending beyond the latter, a board adapted to rest upon the molding material and means for jolting the table, of means engageable with the board and table for clamping the flask to thetable, said means including members. operable during actuation of the jolting means to exert a yieldable pressure upon the board for urging the molding'mat'erial toward the flask and to compact the same within the flask. 4. "In a mold jolting and ramming apparatus, the combination with a table mounted for rotation andoperable to support a pattern and trunk with molding material in the flask extending beyondthe latter and means for j olting the table, of means operable during the actuation of the jolting means for exerting a yieldable pressure upon the molding material to urgethe same'tow ard the flask and'for clamping the flask tothe table.
5. In a mold jolting and ramming apparatus, the combination with a rotatable table for supporting a pattern and flask with moldingmaterial in the flask extending beyond thelatter, and aboard adapted to rest upon the molding material, of means engageable with the board and table for clamping the flask to the latter, said means including members operable to exert a yieldable pressure upon the board to urge the molding material toward the flask, and means for jolting the flask and molding material during operation of the means aforesaid.
6. In a mold jolting and ramming apparatus, the combination with a table for supporting a pattern andflask with molding material in the flask extending beyond the latter and a board adapted to rest upon the molding material oif aclamp haying a porti-on engaging the board and having another 7 portion engaging the table, means for actuatin theclampto cause the latter to exert a substantially constant pressure upon the board for'urgingthe molding material toward the flask and for securing the flask to the table, and means operable during the operation of said clamp for jolting the flask V terial, of a clamp having'a portion engageable with the' boa'rd and an adjustable portion engageable with the table, means for actuating the adjustable portion toelamp' the flask to the table and for exerting a substantially constant pressure upon the board to urge themoldin'g'material toward the flask and thereby compact the same within the flask, and'means for jolting the flask and molding material during the operation of said clamp. i
In testimony whereof I Iafiixmy signature.
