Description

Jan. 3, 1933. T. J. MAGNUSON CHAPLET Filed May 13, 1932 INVENTOR. 7h are fWaynu san.
Patented Jan. 3, 1933 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
THURE J. MAGNUSON, OF CHICAGO, ILLI NOIS, ASSIGNOR TO THE FANNER MAN- UFACTURING COMPANY, 01 CLEVELAND, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO I CHAPLET I Application filed May 13,
fuly described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
The annexed drawing and the following description set forth in detail certain structure embodying the, invention, such disclosed means constituting, however, but one of Va rious structural forms in which the principle of my invention may be used. a
In the drawing Figs. 1 and 2 are respective views of chaplets embodying the improved head but having different forms of stem; Figs. 3 and 4 are side elevations partly in section corresponding to Figs. 1 and 2 respectively,v Fig. 5 is a plan view of the heads shown 1n Figs. 1 and 2; Fig. 6 is a plan view of a modified form of head; andFig. 7 is a plan view of a further modification. 1
Referring to the drawing, it will be seen that the chaplet consists of a head 1 and a stem 2 or 3 provided with such nicks, collars and/ or other irregularities and roughnesses as may be useful for holding the upper end 4 or 5 of the stem in the casting and at the same time allowing the lower end, carrying the head, to be broken off readily. The stem as such isnot a feature of the present invention. In the prior art the head 1 has usually been square and of sufiicient area to afford a good hearing but difficulties have been found in that the sand did not pack or shape around the edges of the head. In order to eliminate this I have relieved and cut away portions of the edge, as shown at 6 in the various figures, so that the overall dimensions of the head are not reduced and the bearing surface is as wide as though the cuts 6 had not been made. The reduction in area'ma-de by the cuts 6 is more than compensated for by the which the sand can. work in packing around opening into which the stem is fastened is the head 1 becomes more firmly .1932. Serial No. 611,149.
fact that the sand packs well around the remaining surface of the head and that the bearing is stillwidely distributed. It will be seen, for example, that the corners 7 7, are as widely spaced apart as previously so that any overturning tendency is still resisted by a broad base. 7 r
The principles of theinvention may also be applied to a head such as 10 shown in Fig. '6 in which the relieving openings are entirely included within the periphery of the head instead of cutting into the edge. Thus, in the head 10, openings 11 are cut out through the head. 7
A further modification is shown in Fig. 7 in which a head 12 is shown having four openings, such as 13, the outer edge of the head 12 being uncut. InFigs. 5, 6 and 7 the indicated at 14 in each instance. r
In operation, the chaplet is placed in the usual manner, the only difference being-that embedded in the sand than is usually in case. v Other modes of applying the principle of my invention. may be employed instead of the one explained,1change being made asregards the structure herein disclosed, provided the means stated by any of the following claims or the equivalent of such stated means be employed.
I therefore particularly point out'and dis- 7 tinctly claim as my invention p 1. A chapletrhaving a head comprising a plate inwardly cut away at opposite peripheral points. 7
2. A chaplet having a head formed by a plate with semi-circular notches cut out of opposite sides thereof;
Signed by me this llday of May, 1932. THURE J. MAGNUSON.
