NI Ls A. wAnnBnnG, or wILK snunG, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR r WESTINGHOUSE nnncrmc a MANUFACTURING co rANY, A oonrona'rzon or PENNSYLVANIA rnA sMrssIoN LINE DEVICE Application filed August 29,1927. Serial malaria.
My invention relates to transmission-line devices, and particularly to electrostaticfield control devices for high-voltage insula tors c One object of my invention is to provide an electrostatic-field-controlling device for a high-voltage insulator that shall also function as means for holding or maintaining the insulator in position. v
Another object of my invention is to provide an electrostatic-field-control1ing device that shall facilitateitsassembly and mounting in operative position.
A further object of my invention is to provide'a transmission-line device of the above indicated. characterthat shall be simple and durable in construction, economical to manufacture and eifective in its operation.
I In electrostatic-field-controlling devices, such as arcing-ring structures having ring portions of relatively great diameter and radial supporting arms, difficultiesare encountered in suitably and economically connecting the outer ends of the supporting arms to the ring portions, without interrupting the arc-assuming surfaces of the rings. Difficulties are also encountered in mounting the supporting arms on the insulator structure.
It is my aim to overcome the above mentioned difliculties and also, to provide. an arcing-ring structure that, in addition to its usual function of controlling the electrostatic field about the insulator, shall, also, mechanically function to assist in holding attachingparts of the insulator to each other.
Accordingly, in practicing my invention, I provide a field-control structure comprising a radially divided ring portion that is so constructed and related to a supporting arm member therefore, and in which the sup porting arm member is so related to attaching parts of the insulator as to provide an extremely simple and economical device that facilitates its assembly in mounting and assists in holding the attaching parts of the insulator together.
Figure 1 of the accompanying drawing is a side elevational view of a transmission-line device embodying my invention, showing only the upper unit of a series string of similar units" with which. the to cooperate, V F V Fig.2 is a top plan view of a'port-ion of the structure shown in Fig; 1, withgpa'rt's omitted for clearness, i Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken'substandevice adapted tiallyalong the 111 6111 111 of Fig.1, l
' Fig. it is a sectionalview taken along' the line lV-IV of Fig. 3 and, v
Fig. 5 is'a detail view, similar to the upper central portion of Fig. 1, of a modifiedform of my invention.
- A suspension insulator 'of usual construction comprisesa dielectric body member 2, a pm member 3 and a cap, member 4 havinga socket portion 5 for thereception of a ballend shank or other suitable link connector member 6'havinga" hook for attaching'the insulator to a tower or other suitable support, as by'a co-operating detachable c ng nectorelement or eye 8. A cotter pin 9 may be provided to holdthe ball of themember 6 imposition.
An 'electrostatic-field-controlling device of my invention comprisesa supporting'arm or element 10 of inverted substantially U shape, preferably constructed of flat sheetor strap metal having an apertured intermedi ate por tion 12 for attachment to the member 6, and free end portions l lfor supporting an annular arc-assuming element 15. p I
The intermediate portion 12 be se curely positioned on the member 6, as byfa bolt or screw 17 and suitable positioning lugs18. i
Each free end portion 14: off the supporting member 10 is provided with oppositely projecting cylindrical portions 20 and 21, the
portion 20 of which may be in the form, of a cylindrically-headed bolt having shank portion 22 projecting through an openingin the end 14 for the reception of projection 21 in the form of a cylindrical nut. The projections 20 and 21 may, ofcourse, be otherwise .7
halves of tubular material, or solid material,
having apertured ends which telescopically fit the projections and 21 and are held in place, as by screws 24., extending through apertures in the halves of the element 15 and into tapped openings in the projections 20 and 21.
In the above described structure, after the hook of the member 6 has been placed in position in the eye member 8, mounting of the f and electrostatic-field-controlling device placing of the screw 17 relative to the hook of the member 6, )revents displacement ofthe hook from the eye member 8. 7
Also, the mounting of the halves of the annular element 15 is rendered an exceedingly easy operation by fitting the ends thereof to the projections 20 and 21 and placing the screws 24 in position. This structure also, permits either half of the element 15 to be removed-and replaced without disturbing or detaching the other element from the supporting member 10.
, Further, by forming theelement 1 0 of flat.
strap or sheet material, and the arc-assumposed at a lowerposition on-thehook of the I member 6;. By this construction, the por tion 12gnot only functions to prevent re- 1:r'1 ova-l,. of the hook of thememberfi from the eye 8 but also, prevents displacement of the hook from the socket portion 5. In the latter case, to remove the book fromthe socket,it is necessary to move the hook and socket toward eachother, in order to remove the ball, at the lower end of the hook, later- 1 ally through the entrance to the socket.
With the lower edge of the portion 12 properly positioned, the hook and socket cannot be moved to so permit their separation. Obviously the portion 12 may be constructed of slightly: greaterwidth to have its upper edge in a position corresponding to the upper edge thereof. in Fig. 1 and its lower edge in the position thereof shown in Fig. 5. f
.'While I have shown and described particular forms of my invention, changesmay be effected therein without departing from the spirit and scope thereof, as set forth in the appended claims.
, I claim as my invention:
2. A transmissiondine device comprising the combination with an insulator, of an electrostatic-field-controlling device therefor comprising a supporting portion having a plurality of receiving'portions and a plurality of arc-assuming portions telescopically fitting said receiving portions.
3. 7 A transmission-line device comp-rising the combination with an insulator, of an electrostaticfield-controlling device therefor comprising a supporting portion having a plurality V of oppositely-extending receiving portions and a plurality of arc-assuming portions telescopically fitting saidreceiving port1ons. V
4'. A1 transmission-line device comprising the combination with an insulator, of an electrostatic-fieldpontrolling device therefor comprising a radially-divided arc-assuming portion and a supporting arm having 'an outer end portion telescopically fitting. ends of said arc-assuming portion formed by the division thereof. 1, f
5. A transmission-line device comprising the combination with an insulator, of an electrostatic-field-controlling device therefor comprising a supporting arm'having an inner end supported adjacent to the insulator axi s and opp'ositely-extending projections adjacent to its outer end, and a radially-split annular arc-assumin element having. aperturedends telescopically fitting said projectionsfi r 6. A transmission-line device comprising the combination with an'insulator,-,of an electrostatic field-controlling device'therefor comprising a supporting member ofsubstantially U-shape. having adjacent to each free end thereof,oppositely-extending cylindrical projections at'substantially right angles to the end and a halved annular tubular arc-I assuming element, the ends of which telescope said projections and are held in. position thereon. v In testimony whereof, I have hereunto subscribed my name this 24th day of August,
.7 NILS WAHLBERG.
