The subject of this invention is a safety device applicable to addressing and other similar printing machines, its chief object being-toprevent injury to the fingers of the attendant by the printing ar-m;
According to the invention the printing arm is actuated by a reciprocating bar in slotted connection therewith, a pawl is adapt ed to be engaged with said bar by levers acting on the presence-of an obstacle, for example a finger, in the path of the printing arm or a bracket thereon, the said pawl on such engagement occurring being caused by the movement of the bar to remove a detent from v alever which is then impelled by a spring to disconnect the said bar from the printing arm;
In order that the said invention may be clearly understood and readily carried into effect, the same will now be described more fully with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 represents in side elevation and Figure 2 in plan a constructional embodiment of the invention.
In the drawing a indicates the work-table, b the printing arm pivoted at Z) and provided with a pin t engaging a slot 8 n a connecting bar 0 reciprocated by an oscillating lever 61. The oscillatory movement may be (Z through a connecting rod pivotally connected to the lower end thereof, wh ch connecting rod may receive a reciprocatory movement from a crank on the main drive shaft of the machine. These mechanisms are not shown for the specific construction thereof forms no part of my invention. A flap 6, preferably forming a part of the table a, actuates the safety device n the following manner :-If during the descent of the printing arm I), there is an obstacle, for instance the hand or finger of the attendant, under the printing head f or a bracket (1 thereon, the flap 6 will be first pressed slightl downwardly. This movement, in opposition to a spring it (Figure 1) will be transmitted by the rod 71 to the levers is, Z, which cause a tooth at the end of a rod or pawl m to engage one of a series of notches or rack teeth a in the connecting bar 0.

The detent 0 normally engagesthe end of a lever q to hold the same downwardly against the action of a spring Therefore, when the tooth at the end of the rod m seats in one of the notches n the detent 0 may be moved from engagement with the end 1' of the lever g for when this occurs the lever (I will be moved in a counter-clockwise direction as viewed in Fig. 1. As soon as the detent 0 is disengaged from the end 0 of the lever 9 said lever will be pivoted upwardly by the spring p and will engage and raise the connecting bar 0 to thereby disengage the notch s from the pm If and therefore no further movement will be imparted to the printing arm I) by the bar 0.
In order to prevent the safety device from being released by thick printing material, for instance such as cardboard on newspapers, thenotches n are so located on the bar 0 that when the printing arm 6 has reached the position in which it is represented in Figure 1, the notched part has passed the tooth of the rod m which is therefore inoperative.
By raising the end of the lever g whichforms ahandle Q), in the direction of the arrow'P, the detent 0 is allowed to return under the impulse of the spring 10 into a position in which it will again engagethe said lever and hold it inactive until the next release of the safety device.
I have set forth that the device operates to' disconnect the printing arm?) but manifestly the device might be arranged to disconnect any mechanism susceptible of being driven by a pin and slot connection such as that shown. It is also to be understood that I have illustrated and described but a selected embodiment of my invention and that this is susceptible of variation and modification and I therefore do not wish to be limited to the precise details set forth but desire to avail mysel of such changes and alterations as fall within the purview of the following claims:
What I claim and desire to secure by LettersPatent of the United States is-:
1. In a printing machine, a table, aprinta member, yieldable said rin'ting ing member, means imparting movement to sai printing member toward and away from said table, means detachably connecting said movement imparting means to said printing member, means for disconnecting said movement imparting means from said printing means urging the disconnecting means into operative position, means holding said disconnecting means in inoperative position against the action of said yieldable means, means for moving said holding means from holding position, and means for rendering said moving means operative and including a portion disposed below said table and adapted to be operated when an obstacle in the path of said printing member is pressed against said table by pressure exerted by said printing member during the movement thereof toward said table.
2.; In a printing machine, a table, a printing-member, means imparting movement to member to move said printing mem er. toward and away from said table, means detachably connecting said movement imparting, means to said printing member, means for disconnecting said movement impartingmeans from said printing member, means holdingsaid disconnecting means in inoperative position, means for moving said holding means from means for rendering the moving means operative and including a portion disposed be low said table and adapted to be operated When an obstacle in the path of said printing member is pressed against said table by pressure exerted by said printing member during movement thereof toward said table. .-3.-In a printing machine, an operating member, a printing member, means supporting said printing member, a connecting bar extending between said operatin member and said printing member and etachably connected to said printing member, disconnecting means movable into a position whereat the means acts to disconnect said connecting bar from said printing member, means holding said disconnecting means out of the position whereat the means disconnects said connecting bar, and means operable by an obstacle in the path of movement of said printing member for moving said holding means from holding position whereby when said holding means is moved from hol ding position said disconnecting means is rendered operative, to disconnect said connecting bar from said printing member topermit said printing member to be freely moved about the support therefor.
4. In a. printing machine, an operating member, a printing member, a connecting bar extending between said operating member and said printing member and detachably connected to said printing member, means for disconnecting said printing member, means holding said holding position, and
said connecting bar from disconnecting means in inoperative position, yieldable means urging said disconnecting means into operating position, means for moving said holding means from holding position, and means operable by an obstacle in the path of said printing member for operating said last named means.
5. In a printing machine, an operating member, a printing member, a connecting bar extending between said operating member and said printing member and detachably connected to said printing member, means for disconnecting said connecting bar from said printing vmember, means holding said disconnecting means in inoperative position, a member connected to said holding 'means and engageable with means on said connecting bar for connecting said member thereto,and means operable by an obstacle in the path of said printing member for moving said bar into engagement with the means on said connecting bar whereby said bar will move with said connecting bar to disengage said holding means to permit said disconnecting means to detach said connecting bar from said printing member. 1
6. In a printing machine, an operating member, a printing member, a connecting bar having a pluraiity of teeth therein, means detachably connecting said connecting bar to said printing member, means for disconnecting said connecting bar from said printing member, a spring for urging said disconnecting means into disconnecting position, a detent for holding said disconnecting means against the action of said spring, a bar connected to said detent. and means operable by an obstacle in the path of said printing member for moving said bar into engagement with the teeth on said connecting member whereby said means may be moved therewith to disengage said detent from said discone necting means.
