Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ZINA DOOLITTLE, OF PERRY, GEORGIA.
MACHINE FOR TURNING TI-IE BAND PORTIONS 0F CARRIAGE-HUBS.
Specification of Letters PatentiNo.
To all whom it 'may concern:
Be it known that I, ZINA DooLrrTLE, of Perry, in the county of Houston and State of Georgia, have invented a new and useful Machine for Turning the Front End of Carriage-Hubs to the Size of the Band, which I call a Hand-Lathe; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a perspective View.
A represents a socket nut or handle which receives the screw G on the end of B.
B is a square strap wrench as represented at D, at one end and the screw G at the other.
C is a bar with a strap E at one end through which B passes. The other end is secured to the handle A by the clasp F Opposite the strap E on bar C is a projection upon which the cutter H is secured by the bolt I, thus making the bar C act as a sliding rest.
To operate this lathe raise the wheel by the lifting jack so that it will turn free from the floor then attach the wrench D to the 18,898, dated December 22, 1857.
nutwasher on carriage axle with the set screw J, then set the cutter to agree with the shoulder on the hub and with one hand turn the wheel, and regulate the cutter H, with the other by turning the handle A.
K represents the hub of carriage wheel.
The object of this invention is to do away with the common slow and imperfect process of fit-ting bands with the mallet and chisel and can be used in the twofold capacity of wrench and lathe, and by changing the cutter H to the other side of the bar C it will apply to either side of a carriage.
I do not claim the exclusive use of any of the parts, taken as parts of the machine described and shown, but only in so far'as the same is used in combination, for the purpose of my invention ;-but- I claim Y The exclusive use and the combination of the strap wrench D, the handle A and the sliding rest C with the cutter H, the whole arranged and shown substantially for the purpose set forth.
ZINA DOOLITTLE. Test:
