The present invention relates to protective devices for windows or doors through which transactions in money, securities, ewelry and other valuablesare handled. Such protective devices are particularly useful for windows of bank tellers compartments.
The present invention comprises essential 1y a bandit-proof or bullet-resistantexchange plate for a window oropening through which transactions in valuables are carried on and has for its primary purpose to provide an improved form and construction for an article of this nature. The bullet-proof exchange I plate forms an auxiliary shelf presented to the customer on the outside of the bank partition and to the teller or other official ontheinside of the partition, the main surface of the ex-.
change plate approximating the horizontal plane, but having gradually curved surfacesto prevent the insertion of a gun beneath the grill or other protective wall covering the main part of the window-and also serving as bullet-deflecting surfaces to prevent a bullet fired at the teller or other'oflicial by an intruder from reaching its intended victim.
An important consideration attached tomy improved bandit-proof exchange plate resides in the fact that its installation calls for no change in the usual business procedure as carried on in the past hv bank tellers. cashiers 1931. Serial No. 549,838.
the above-identified application of Albert.
Baker, equipped with one form of my improved bandit-proof exchange plate.
Figure 2 is a horizontal section of the same on the line 2-2, of Figure 1 showing the bandit-proof exchange plate in plan.
Figure 3 is a vertical section on the line another form of my improved exchange plate.
Figure 8 is a transverse section on the line 8 -8, of Figure 7.
Figure 9 is a transverse section on the line 99, of Figure 7.
Figure 10 is a vertical section from front. torear of the exchange plate on the line.
10'10, of Figure 7.
According to the embodiment of my invention shown on the drawings, a wall or partition 1 which is preferably constructed of bul let-proof material, is provided with a suitable opening to receive a metal frame 2 provided with fiat bars 3 arranged in vertical parallel planes inclined to the wall or partistruction and arrangement of parts is substantially similar to that shown and described in the above-identified copending application of Baker, Serial No. 542,231. 7
Extending across the lower ends of the bars 3, according to the present embodiment of my invention, is a horizontal plate 6 which is preferably constructed of bullet-proof material. Said plate is provided with an elongated notch 7 in its lower edge and with the addition of the bullet-proof exchange plate to be presently described forms a suitable opening for the passage of money and other valuables between casher and customer. As shown in Figure 3, a triangular bracket 8 is secured to the wall or partition on the inner side thereof. Extending through the notch 7 andsupported by the wall or partition and bracket 8, is an exchange plate of improved form and construction. Referring more especially to Figures 2 and {1, it will be seen that this exchangeplate comprises a central flat portion 9 extending between diagonally opposite corners of the exchange plate on opposite sides of the window grill, said flat portion 9 being widened intermediately of said corners and merging inwardly with the upwardly-curved surface of a raised flange 10 extending inwardly from the wall or partition 1 and around the adjacent inner corner thereof. Said flange is reduced in depth along the innermost edge until it merges into the central flat portion 9 of the plate. Said flange 10 is provided at its forward end with a triangular lug 10a whereby it may be secured to the wall or partition 1. As shown best in Figures 4 and 5, the exchange plate is provided with an increasing depth of metal toward its left forward corner 11, the upper surface thereof being merged into the flat upper surface of the central flat portion 9 of the plate. Extending through the thickened metal along the side edge is a notch 11a in alinement with the forward face of the triangular lug 19a, the lower edge of the transverse plate 6 being seated therein. By referrmg more especially to Figure 2, it will be seen that if a cashier takes his stand at the.
said exchange plate and thus in effect pro vides a smooth shelf for the normal transaction of business. Nevertheless, in the possible event that the cashier is confronted by a bandit at the window, the former is given ample protection by reason of the right-hand edge and right-hand inner corner of the inwardly presented portion of the exchange plate being provided with a flange curved upwardly away from the flat surfaced area for upwardly deflecting a bullet which may be fired through the restricted opening below the lower edge of the cashers grill. Furthermore, the front left corner of the forwardly presented portion of the exchange plate is inclined upwardly and outwardly from the flatsurfaced area so that a pistol can be inserted below the grill in the direction of the cashier only with a downward tilt and thus precludes the possibility of a bullet reaching the cashier through the restricted opening.
Referring now to the modified form of my improved exchange plate shown in Figures 7 to 10 inclusive, said modified form may comprise a central bottom portion 12 merging laterally and rearwardly into a raised flange 13, and a forwardly-presented shelf 14 which may be hollowed transversely as shown in Figure 8 by thickening the metal-around the forward corners 15 and 16 of the plate. Said raised flange 13 is preferably constructed with a maximum depth around the rear edge of the plate to afford protection to a cashier standing directly behind the window opening. This formof my invention may be provided with lugs 17 for attaching the exchange plate to the inner side of the wall or partition 1 and may be employed with or without the inclined grill bars and mirror 5 provided the front wall and window are made bulletproof. It will be understood from this description that by making the notch 7 or exchange opening of suitable size in relation to the thickness and arrangement of the thickened or raised corners 15 and 16 of the'shelf 1 1, it becomes impossible to insert'a pistol through the exchange opening or to arrange it in any position suitable for firing a shot at the cashier above the raised flange 13.
I claim v 1. A bandit-proof exchange plate adapted to be disposed at the bottom of a restricted opening in a cashiers grill, said exchange plate comprising portions presented outwardly and inwardly from the grill, said plate being provided with a flat-surfaced area extending across both of said portions of the plate, said inwardly-presented portion being provided with a raised flange extending along one edge and around an inner corner thereof, the upper surface of said portion merging into said flat-surfaced area, a corner of the outwardly-presented portion of the plate being raised above said flat-surfaced area on the side of said restricted opening opposite to the edge along which said raised flange extends.
'2. A bandit-proof exchange plate adapted relativel lar er Jortion resented inwardl y b y from the grill, said plate being provided with a fiat-surfaced area extending substantially diagonally across the plate from the right outer corner thereof to the left inner corner thereof, said relatively larger portion being provided with a raised flange extending inwardly along its right-hand edge to a maximum depth at its inner right-hand corner and decreasing in depth along its innermost edge and merging into said flat-surfaced area near its left-hand inner corner, the outer lefthand corner of the plate being raised and the upper surface of the plate being inclined away from said corner and merged into said flat snrfaced area.
3. A bandit-proof exchange plate adapted to be. arranged below a cashiers grill with portions presented outwardly andinwardly with respect to said cashiers grill, said exchange plate being provided with a flat surfaced area extending inwardly from the outwardly presented portion beneath and past said cashiers grill, the inwardly presented portion of said exchange plate having its upper surface curved upwardly away from said flat surfaced area around one corner and along one side extending between that corner and said grill and the outwardly presented portion of said exchange plate being inclined upwardly and outwardly from said flat-surfaced area around a corner thereof diagonally opposite to the first-mentioned corner of the inwardly presented portion to produce downward tilt to a pistol presented inwardly between the lower edge of said cashiers grill and said exchange plate toward said upwardly curved surface.
4. A bandit-proof exchange plate adapted to be arranged below and spaced from the bottom edge of a cashiers grill with portions presented outwardly and inwardly therefrom, said exchange plate being provided with a substantially unbroken area extending inwardly from the outer edge of the outwardly presented portion and inclined upwardly to the front and side edge of one corner of the outwardly present/ed portion of said exchange plate, the inwardly presented portion of said exchange plate having its upper surface curved upwardly around the corner thereof which is diagonally opposite to the first-mentioned corner of the forwardly presented portion of said exchange plate and toward the side edge of said inwardly presented portion between the second-mentioned portion, the other corner of the inwardly presented portion of said exchange plate having its upper surface curved upwardly away from saidflat surfaced area around one corner and along the side of said plate between that corner and said grill, the outwardly presented portion of said exchange plate be ing inclined upwardly and outwardly from said fiat-surfaced area around its other cor ner substantially diagonally opposite to the corner of said inwardly presented portion toward which the upper surface of said plate is upwardly curved.
