- :een: manege o macacvacaaaczaacscnnacvnwo Patented Oct. 25, 1932 UNITED sTATEs JACOB I. OBENT, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK GARMENT Application led March 25, 1931.
This invention relates to garments.
An object of this invention is to provide, in a convertible garment of the character described, comprising a jacket and a skirt attachable thereto to form a long coat, and which may be worn selectively as a jacket or as a coat, highly improved means for quickly and easily attaching the skirt portion to or detachlng same from the jacket,
provision being made for effectively concealing the fastening means and preventing accidental detachment of the skirt port-ion, as for example upon exerting a pull on the skirt portion.
A further object of this invention is to provide in a garment of the character described, neat, strong and durable attachment means for various separable portions of the garment, which shall be comparatively inexpensive to manufacture, which may be made as a unit for the trade, which shall be easy to apply to the garment, comparatively simple to manipulate, which may be incorporated into a wide variety of garments,
' either in manufacturing the garment or in converting a one-piece garment into a two piece garment, and which shall yet be practical and eiiicient to a high degree.
Other objects of this invention will in part be obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out.
rThe invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements, and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter described, and of which the scope of application will be indicated in the following claims.
In the accompanying drawing, in which is shown one of the various possible illustrative embodiments of this invention,
Fig. 1` is a perspective view of a garment embodying the invention;
Fig. 2 is a crosssectional view of the attaching portions of the garment showing the same separated;
Fig. 3 is a View similar to Fig. 2 but showing the portions of the garment attached; and
Fig. 4 is a side view of the attaching means spread flat.
Serial No. 525,095.
Referring now in detail to the drawing, 10 designates a garment embodying the invention here shown in the form of a womans louter fur garment open at the front, it being understood that the invention may be embodied in a large variety of garments, whether mens or womens or outer or other types.
The coat 10, as illustrated in Fig. 1, is a single long or three-quarter coat having an upper or jacket portion 11 and a bottom skirt portion 12.
Means is provided for detachably attaching the bottom portion 12 to the upper portion 11 so that the garment may be worn either as a long coat, or, with the bottom removed, as a jacket. To this end, there is sewed to the lower edge portion 14 of the upper or body portion 11 of the garment,- as by a line of stitching 15, disposed above the lower edge 17 of said portion 14, an elongated strip of strong cloth 16 extending along the entire bottom edge of the upper garment portion.
The lower edge 21 of said strip 16 is preferably substantially in alignment with the lower edge 17 of said portion 14, whereby said strip 16 and said portion 14 constitute elongated flaps forming an elongated channel or pocket for the purpose hereinafter described. Interposed between said strip 16 and said portion 14 and sewed thereto, preferably by means of the common line of stitching 15, and projecting downwardly therefrom is an elongated strip of cloth 22, to the lower edge of which there is attached a row of slider actuated hookless fastener portions 23. The latter are preferably disposed a substantial distance above said lower edge portions 17 and 21. Sewed to the inner surfaces of said portion 14 and strip 16, adjacent the lower edges thereof, and at spaced distances along the length thereof are complementary snap fastener portions 25 and 26, respectively, for closing the pocket formed by said portion 14 and strip 16. The inner coat lining 27 may be sewed, as at 28, to the outer side of the strip 16 adjacent said lower edge 21 thereof. When the upper portion 11 of the garment is worn as a jacket without the bottom skirt Aportion 12, the snap fastener portions 25, 26 are snapped toget er to close the bottom of the jacket.
Attached to the upper edge portion 30 of the lower portion 12 of the coat, as by a line of stitching 31, adjacent the outer edge 32 thereof, is a strong strip of cloth 33 likewise extending around the entire edge 32. The
inner lining portion 34 of said garment portion 12 may be sewed to said strip 33 and portion 30 by means of said common line ofstitching 31. Sewed to the upper edge portion 35 A slider cannot move to the right for unhooking said fastener portions. However, upon moving the handle to a position at right angles to the slider 40, the latter may be moved to the right for separating the fastener portion 23 and 39. When the slider is moved to the extreme right it remains attached to the end portion 44 of the lower line of fasteners 39, in the manner well known in the art, but becomes disengaged from the upper portion 45 of the upper row of fasteners 23. The lower ortion 12 of the garment may thus be quicky attached to or detached from the upper portion.
For attaching the lower portion 12 to the upper portion 11 of the garment, the slider 40 is properly manipulated, in the well-known manner, for attaching the same to said portion 45, and the slider moved to the left. The handle member 42 may then be moved against the hoolrless fastener portions to prevent the latter from being separated or the slider from moving to the right, as for example, when a pull is exerted on the lower garment portion 12.
Attached to one side of the strip 33 adjacent the edge 32 of said portion 30, at spaced intervals thereon, are snap fastener portions 50 adapted to cooperate with the snap fastener portions 25; and sewed to the other side of said strip 33 are snap fastener portions 51 adapted to cooperate with snap fastener portions 26. Thus after the slider is moved to the left upon attaching the coat portions together, the snap fastener portions 25 may be attached to the snap fasteners 50 and the snap fasteners 26 attached to the snap fasteners 51 for closing the pocket formed between the members 14 and 16, and concealing the hookless fasteners and strips 12, 38 and 33.
When the pocket is closed, the handle 42 i will be retained in position lying against the hookless fasteners and preventing accidental detachment of said portion 11.
Although the invention has been described with partlcular reference to a womans fur garment, it is understood that my improved attaching means tobe incorporated into various garments, either mens or womens and in a large variety of types, it being a dominant feature of the invention to employ the hookless fasteners and to conceal the same in the manner and for the purpose described. The attaching means furthermore maybe incorporated into new garments or applied to garments now in use, for example, in converting a long coat to serve additionally as a jacket and hence' avoiding the expense of two garments. The attachment means may further be made for the trade as a unit comprising a pair of elongated flaps 14, 16 forming the pocket, the strlps 22, 33 and 38 carrying the slider actuated fasteners and the snap fasteners 25, 26, 50, 51 for closing the pocket and concealing said slider actuated fasteners.
It will thus be seen thatthere is provided a device in which the several objects of this invention are achieved, and which is well adapted to meet the conditions of practical use.
As various possible embodiments might be made of the above invention, and as various changes might be made in the embodiment setforth, it is to be understood that all matter herein set forth or shown in the accompanying drawing is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
