" NIT-ED STATES- PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM H. H. FRYE, OF MARSHALLTOWN, IOWA.
IMPROVEMENT IN WIRE FENCES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 188,350, dated March 13, 1877 application filed February 22, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. H. FRYE, of Marshalltown, in the county of Marshall and State of Iowa, have inventedcertain new and useful Improvements in Metallic Fence- Posts and Wire-Fastening Devices, of which the following is a specification Figure 1 is a front view. Fig. 2 is a rear view. Fig. 3 is a side view. Fig. 4 is a detail to show the fastening device or wire with key or wedge and fence-wire.
The object of the present invention is to afford a metallic fastening device to secure the fence wire or strip to and upon the post, all substantially in the manner now to be more fully set out and explained.
In the accompanying drawing, A denotes the metal post, which may be made in any usual and ordinary method Along the entire length of the inner side, as now shown, is a strengthening-rib, A. This is usually and preferably placed, not exactly centrally, but nearerone edge of the post, so as to leave a clear space or flange for the application .of this fastenin g device. Near the lower end of the post, and opposite to the said rib A, is another rib, A, which serves to further stiffen or strengthen the post at this place, where it rests in the ground. post in this way it can be easily driven into the ground, and, once in place, is secure against working or displacement.
To facilitate the driving of the post it is so made as that in entirety (all its parts being suitably shaped for that purpose) it has a point, a, at its lower end sufficiently sharp to enable it readily to enter the earth without the application of any unusual force. Through the side or flange of the post I provide any suitable number of apertures a,
When, now, (the post having been fixed in .place,) it is desired to fasten the fence-wire B to and upon the post, the fastening-wire O is By the peculiar formation of the placed about said fence-wire, so that the same at its outer end. The inner ends of the fastening-wire being now put through the aperture a, the fencewire is brought close against the face of the post A. At this moment the key or wedge D is placed in the loop or eye 0 of the fastening-wire O, and its lower end passes down between the free ends a" of the fastening-wi re, which ends thus serve as guides.
Any desired binding or tightening pressure can be exerted upon the fastening-wire by means of the wedge or key, which need only be driven down more or less forcibly, according to the needs of the case.
In usual construction I prefer to make the apertures a in such relation to the rib A that the fastening devices, when in place, may be braced against the said rib. As my device is thus made and used, the wire can be rapidly attached and secured rigidly in position, and the entire fence is a solid and per- Having thus described my invention, what I consider new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. The wire-fastening device 0, having loops 0 c and ends a, and adapted to be used with key or wed ge D, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The combination of post A, as described, with metallic fastening device 0, made as described, and wedge or key D and wire B, substantially in the manner and for the purposes set forth. v
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
W. H. H. FRYE. Witnesses W. L. ANDREWS, JAMES DEWEY.
