Description

Sept. 20; 1932. J. H. BROWN REFUSE SEPARATOR Filed Nov. 22, 1930 'iNi/ENTR Patented Sept. 20, 1932 UNITED sra'rss JOHN H. BROWN, or HASKELL, okLAHoMA REFUSE sErARA'ron Application filed November 22, 1930. Serial liTo. 497,381. I if This invention appertains and relates to improvements 1n refuse separators for. separating and removing foreign objects from remove all foreign objects from the cotton before it reaches the gin saws by a device 1 that Will be of low cost to manufacture cheap to install, and of low cost to maintain.
By removing all rocks metal pieces and other refuse from the cotton before 1t enters the gins there will be nothing to cause sparks by coming in contact with the gin saws, thereby practically eliminating the origin of the large majority of all gin fires.
Another important advantage of this invention is that by removing all foreign objects from the cotton before it enters the gin there will be nothing to dull the gin saws.
Other important objects and advantages of the invention will readily become apparl tions.
In the drawing Fig. 1 is a side view of the invention showing it in position on the suction pipe.
Fig. 2 is an end View of the invention, looking toward the left of Fig. 1. j
Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary transverse section on line 33 of Fig. 1. ,5 Referring to the drawing wherein likenumerals designate like parts, numeral 1 indicates asuction pipe used in transferring cotton or other light material by means of air drafts.
In this description the word cotton will be used, but the uses of the invention eX- tend to all similar materials. Cotton being transferred from wagonsror bins travels through pipe 1, entering 011 the left and traveling towards the right.
Numeral 2 indicates an opening in pipe 1,
ent to the reader of the following specificathe size of which'is controlled byisliding valve3. i
' Numeral 3 indicates'a sliding valve'whi'ch, has downwardly andfoutwardlyturned side edgeportions which slidably engage in hook-' shaped guides 4 arranged longitudinally of and secured to the outside'of pipe 1 at op.- posite sides of and beyond one end of open ing'2. V I Numeral 5 represents drop pipe connecting with pip'el above, and located immediately below the opening 2 in pipe 1. f Numeral 6 indicates a trap door at the bottom 'of'the depending refuse collecting hopper or drop pipe, 5, which normally closes 65'- the bottom of pipe 5Yto render it'pra'ctic'ally airtight. Q Numeral 7 indicates hinges attaching trap door6topipe5. Numeral 8 indicates a lever a'rmattached' 70. totrap door 6; I
Numeral 9 indicates a balance weight on lever arm 8, whichcan be adjusted by thumb screw and moved back and forth on lever arm 8 as desired.
Numeral 10 indicates a. hand lever to be used in moving sliding valve 3 so as to regulate the size of opening 2. V i v Numeral 11 indicates a bracket to which is hinged the upper end of lever arm 10-said bracket being adapted for attachment to a ceiling or other support.
Numeral 12 indicates .a link connecting lever 10 with sliding valve 3.
' Cotton entering pipe 1 moves tothe right taking with it any nails, rocks or other refuse. On coming to opening 2 in pipe 1, the refuse drops through opening 2 into drop pipe 5. The light cotton being pulled over opening 2 by the air pressure moves 90' on through the pipes to the gin or other. i container to the right. At necessary intervals lever arm 8 is raised, opening trap door 6 and allowing the refuse in pipe 5 to drop in tub orv basket for removal. Any cotton which; might fall in pipe 5 "can be picked from basket or tub by hand and replaced in cotton-bin. V
While the foregoing specification sets forth the invention in specificjterms, it'is' to be 100 f p r 1,878,753
understood that numerous changes in the size, shape and materials may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed hereunder. Havlng thus deserlbed my invention, what I claim as new 1s:
1. In a device for separating refuse from.
seed cotton,-' a suction pipe for conveying the cotton, said pipe having an opening in its under side and guideways at opposite sides v of said opening, a refuse collecting hopper depending from said pipe and communicat u ving with the latter through "saidopening, a
valve. plate for controlling the passage of refuse through said opening slidably engaged in said guideways, and meansfor adjusting said valve plate, said guideways being hook shaped in, section, said valve plate having outwardly and downwardly turned side mari al portions engaged in said guideways. f
2. In a devicefor separating refuse from I seed cotton, a suction pipe for conveying the cotton,-said pipe having an opening in its under side and guldeways 'at OPPOSltB sides 'ofsaid opening, arefuse collectinghopper depending from said pipe and commun1cating with the latter through said opening, a valve plate for controlling the passage of refuse through said opening slidably en gaged in said guideWay-s, means for adjust ing said valve p1ate,,said"1neans including a lever pivoted above and straddling the suction pipe, and alink connecting the intermediate portion of said lever with one end of saidvalve plate. u f JOHN H, BRQWVN,
