Description

. Patented Sept; 20, 1932 ABCEIE BEZAIJD WOLFE OF SUMMI',`NEW JEBSEY nncrmc soeur swrrcn Application fl1edMa-ch 6,"1 929. Serial No. 344589. i
(GRANTEDUNDER 'mr AUT. or MABGE a; 1833, AS An mimi Arm '30, maa; sro o. e. 7157 My invention relates to improvements in spring force' make and break switches adapted to be used for electric light sockets and the like, and the objects of the improvements 5 are, first, to provide in a standard electric light socket a new` and improved type of spring force make and break switch 'of es-' pecial long drability, high efficienc'y and low cost manufacture, andto design said socket 1 to ,accommodate said switch; second, to-produce an electric socket switch of low cost manufacture readily designed to be used in x electric light sockets in general and for all electrical 1 spring action make and-break of el'ectric currents. w y 4 One form of my invention is, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which, Fig. 1 is a view of the top of the socket from a point vertically aboveits center; Eig. 2 is a Vertical sectional view on the broken line 1--1, Fig, 1,;
showing the switch in the on position; Figure Qa is a similar View showing the switch in the ofi' position; Fig. 3 is -a view of the bottom of the base of said socket showing'the -position of the center contact terminal post and shell terminal post; Fig. 4; is a view in perspective of one side of the lower section of the insulation'body ofsaid socket with all parts of the socket removed except the center contact terminal post 33, the metal 'contact 31, and the threaded bolt 32, which electrically connects said terminal post nd metal contact to each other and secures themato said lower section;:Fig. 5 is a view of' a part of the invention showing the top of the recipro- 'cating control rod of the. switch' with the spring cani removed therefrom; Fig. 6 is a View of the bottom center contact as removed 9 from said socket; and Fig. '7 is a perspective view of'a part of the invention showing the fulcrum .andpower end of the triple ended contactor of said switch;
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout' the several views.
section swtching purposes requiring The threa'ded metal tie bolts 1, and 2;'pa ss `through apertures provided in and secure n place the screw shell 3, upper insulation body 4, and lower insu lation body section '5. The threaded nut- 6,' secures sai and is countersunk in the bottom of aid lower section 5,`and the shell post terminal post 7 is provided with a threaded aperture ,which serves as 'a securing nut for said bolt 2.
A portion of the center contact 8, passes down through an a erture provided in section 4 :and is then ent at right angles an f Secured to .said section 4, bythe rivet 9. r One end' of the triple ended bridge member 10, is fulcrumed and hinged to said center contact 8, by means of the tip 11, of said bridge' member which projects through the aperture 12, of said center contact 8, and. theshoulder 13, of said bridge member 10, bear on'and make contact with. said center contact' 8'. The'tip flange 15, 'of said bridge member 10,'retains said tip 1 1,` within`said aperture 12, during the ordinary Operating movement allowed sai'd contactor 10, but the increased movement allowed the latter dur- 7 ing assembl and disassembly of said socket ermits said tip 11, tobe readily removed rom or inserted 'n said aperture 12. The power end 16, of aid bridge member 10, is engaged and its movement is controlled by the spring cam 17, which is Secured to the reciprocating' control rod 18. The latter is provided with the insulation handles 19, and 20, whicli 'project on the outside of said .section 5, and with'the vertical stops 21, and 22, whi h prevent undue elevation during operation of one end of said control rod 18,` and the horizontal stops 23, and'24, see Fig ure .5, which project into the Slots 25 and 26, respectively, see -F igure 4:, in said section 5, prevent undue elevation of the other end of said control rod 18. The bridge member 10 is guide& in its reciprocal movement by an insulated member 34 bolt 1, 60
disposed withinthe cavity 27 as shownin Fig 'member 10, makescontact with tact 31, which is countersunk into the upper end of said section 5, projects over said switch'.
v prising an insulation bodfy tively,
switch cavity 27, in theupper end of said section 5, and the cavities 28, and 29, ateach end of the bottom of said switch cavity 27, accommodate said handl es 19, -and 20, respecand serve to limit the reciprocatingmovement of said control rod 18.
In .the oi position of the switch as shown in Fig.` 2, the contact end 30, of said bridge cavity 27, and is securedin place by the metal bolt 32, which passes through an aperture provided in said section 5, and is secured b 'gitudinall the metal conmeans on the outside of said insulation body for Operating said spring cam.
4.` In an electric socket,- a switch including a pluralit of switching contacts, a triple ended bri one of said Contacts by one of its ends, a lonmovable spring cam engagin with anot er of the ends to cause the thir end to engage with or disengage from the other of said Contacts, and means for operating said spring cam.
ARCHIE REXALD WLFE.
machine thread to the center contact termi nal post 33, of said socket.
The circuit of the above switch is through I' the binding post 33 for the center contact, bolt 32, metal contact 31, bridge member 10, center contact 8, device in shell, bolt 2, and shell binding post 7.
The invention described herein may be manufactured and used by or for the Government of the United States for governmental purposes without the payment to me of any royalty thereon.
I claim: e
1. In an electric socket comprising a shell, center contact, center contact terminal post and shell terminal post, a bridge member hinged to said center contact, a longitudinally movable spring can for actuatin said bridge member, a means o`n the outside of said socket for Operating said spr'n cam, a metal contact engageable with said ridge member, and a permanent electrical connection between said metal'contact' contact terminal post. 2.. In an electric socket comprising a shell, center contact, center contact termnal post and shell terminal post secured'to an insulation bo y, a triple ended bridge member ,with its fulcrum end hinged to said center contact, a spring cam secured to a control rod and engaging the power end of said bridge member for actuating the latter, a metal contact electrically connected to said center contact terminal post for engaging the contact end of said bridge member during the on position of the latter, and a means on the outside of said reciprocating said control rod.
3. In an electrc socket and the like comsupporting the two 'switching Contacts o an electric circuit, a switch comprising a triple ended bridge member withone end hinged to -one of said switching contacts, a longitudinally movable spring cam supported by said insulation body and acting on'and engaging the second end of said bridge member for mo ing the thrd end into or out of contact with the other of said circuit switching contacts, and p and center insulation body for' ge member hingedly connected to 70
