The invention relates to caps or closures for receptacles, and has for its object to provide a device of this character particularly adapted for use in connection with collapsible 5, tubes, and which caps are unscrewed, a limited distance for dispensing purposes and are moved to closed position forthe actual dis pensing operation.
A further object is to provide a cap for a m collapsible tube, which cap, when partially unscrewed, receives in a chamber thereof material from the tube when compressed, and which cap, when screwed to closed position ejects the contents of the chamber thereof is through a discharge opening against the greater bulk of material in the tube.
A further object is to provide cooperating valve seat and annular valve carried by the cap and discharge neck of the tube and formaoing means whereby a positive seal is provided when the cap isin closed position, thereby preventing, leakage through the threaded connection between the cap and neck when the tube is subjected to pressure, which leakage is common on account of the variation in the threads incident to manufacture.
A further object is to provide valve seat connection between the cap and neck of the receptacle above the thread of the neck and cap and shaped in a manner whereb when the cap is threaded to closed position the valve is bent to conform to the contour of the seat thereby formin ing connection accor ing to the threaded connection between the cap and neck, the threads of which vary in course of manufacture.
A further object is to provide an annular valve formed integral with the upper end of the neck and a tapered valve seat'carried by the cap and positioned whereby when the cap is screwed to closed position, the annular valve will be bent to conform to the contour of the valve seat, thereby forming a positive seal between cap and neck above the thriaded connection between the cap and neo t A further object is to provide the neck with an axially disposed" valve cooperating with a discharge port 'e cap and posia positive valve seat-' tioned whereby when t ere is apositive seal between the cap and neck, there will be a positive sealing of the discharge port.
A further object is to form the outer periphery of the cap convexed whereby the material discharged through the port therein may be wiped clean from the cap when the cap is closed. Also to convex the outer end of the discharge port valve to conform to the convexity of the cap.
A further object is to form the port valve integral with a cross member within the neck of the tube below the annular'valve.
A further object is to form the valve and the sleeve carried thereby from a single piece of sheet metal having threads for the receptionof a cap, said sleeve forming adapter means whereby the device may be attached to a bottle neck.
A further object is to dish the upper side of the sleeve thereby forming a downwardly and inwardly extending annular seat for the reception of a sealing washer for preventing material from passing between the sleeve thread and the cap thread.
A further object is to form the annular valve V-shaped in transverse cross section whereby when the cap is screwed to closed position it will easily conform to the shape of the valve seat.
With'the above and other objects in view the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings, described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention may be made within the scope of what is claimed vention.

Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the body of a conventional form of collapsible tube for the reception of a plastic material, for instance tooth paste or paint, and 2 the discharge neck thereof, and which discharge neck is provided with It has been found that during the course of manufacture the threads 3 are necessarily coarsely made, consequently vary and under pressure applied to the tube, for instance 1n shipment and storage, leakage develops around the thread. The device hereinafter set forth is particularly designed to prevent this leakage and to provide a positive seal between the tube cap 4 and the tube neck 2, when the cap is screwed to closed position, as clearly shown in Figure 3. I
During the course of manufacture a V- shaped annular valve 5 is formed on the upper end of the tube neck 2, as shown in Figure 2, and it will be noted by referring to Figure 2 that the valve seat 6 within the cap 4 is bevelled, and when the cap 4 is screwed to closed position on the neck 2, the bevelled seat will engage the annular valve 5 and bend the same inwardly as clearly shown in Figure 3, for forming a close leak-proof connectlon between the cap 4 andthe neck 2. By forming the pliable valve as above set forth, it is obvious it will not be necessary to grind or cut a positive seat for the valve 5, which would involve considerable work, as the threads 3 vary during the course of manufacture.
With the positive sealing leakage is prevented around the threads 3 of the neck, and at the same time accurate machining for the seating is obviated, as the cap, when screwed tightly onto the neck, insures the proper bending and seating of the valve on the seat 6.
Supported on a transverse bar 7 within the neck 2, and below the annular valve 5 is an upwardly extending axially disposed valve 8, the upper end of which is provided with a tapered portion 9, which engages in a discharge port 10, similarly shaped in the cap 4; therefore it will be seen that when the cap is screwed to closed position, the discharge port 10 is positively closed, thereby prevent- "ing leakage through the port around the valve, and it is obvious that in combination with the seating of the annular valve 5, a leak-proof tube closure is provided.
In operation the operator unscrews the cap 4 for a limited distance according to the amount of material to be dispensed; however, he does not entirely removethe cap, consequently the loss of the cap is prevented. After the cap is unscrewed the tube is compressed for filling the cap; however, it has been found that as the cap is unscrewed material within the tube and in the chamber 11 of the cap will be sucked upwardly. After the tube compressing and cap unscrewing operation, the operator rotates the cap 4, and as the direction of least resistance for the plastic material within the cap is through the port 10, the material will be discharged through the port 10 onto the convexed outer surface of the cap where it can be wiped onto a tooth brush for use. It will be noted that the upper end of the valve 8 is convexed and when in closed position conforms to the curvature 12 of the cap 4; therefore, the material discharged onto the surface 12 of the cap can be cleanly wiped from the cap onto a brush; The thread 3 of the neck 2 and the thread 3a of the cap 4 are preferably coarse, so that there can be a quick rotation of the cap with a maximum range of movement, thereby allowing the operator to hold the tube in one hand and rotate the cap to closed or open position with one finger, and
without excessive rotation. During this one bead 15 and extending down from said sleeve is an annular flange 17 which engages the outer side of the bead and is crimped at 18 under the bead, thereby rigidly attaching the sheet metal sleeve 16 to the neck. Stamped from sleeve at one end thereof is an apertured depression 19 and a tubular valve 20, which cooperates with the valve seat 21 therefore, it will be seen that the sleeve and valve may be stamped from a single piece of sheet metal,
thereby materially reducing the cost of manufacture. Threaded on thethreaded sleeve 16, the threads of which are preferably formed by a crimping operation is a cap 22, operating substantially the same as the cap in the other form.
Cap 22 is provided with a downwardly ex tending flange 23 which engages on a washer 24 on the apertured depressed portion 19,
the valve 5, and is ready for the next operathereby forming a seal for preventing escape of material through the threaded connection between the cap 22 and the sleeve 16. It will be noted that by providing the apertured portion 19 from sheet material the valve 20 will have a limited movement transversely in relation to its axis so that the upper end of the valve will conform and properly seat in the valve seat 21 of the cap, thereby adjusting itself to variations in manufacture. By forming the valve 20 from sheet metal it is also obvious that its walls will slightly flex for insuring a positive seating at 21 in the cap.
The device shown in Figures 7 and 8 may be i applied to a tube or other receptacle, but is shown in connection with a bottle for purposes of illustration.
From the above it will be seen that a dispensing cap is provided for a receptacle, which is positive in its operation, provided with means whereby, when the cap is screwed in place, it will positively form, through a bending operation, a valve seated connection around the discharge neck of the receptacle and prevent leakage through the thread, and thleddevice may be cheaply manufactured and so The invention having been set forth what is claimed as new and useful is 1. The combination with a collapsible tube cap having a dischar e port, a tube neck, a threaded connection etween said cap and neck, of a valve seat in the cap, said seat being in the path of the neck, and an annular valve carried by the neck in the path of the seat, said valve being formed from pliable material whereby when the cap is screwed to closed position, it will bend and conform to the shape of the valve seat.
2. The combination with a receptacle cap having a discharge port, a receptacle neck, a
threaded connection between said cap and neck, of a pliable valve carried by the neck, a valve seat carried by said cap in alinement and positioned whereby when the cap is in closed position the valve will be bent to form a leak-proof connection between the neck and cap.
3. The combination with a receptacle, a
cap having a discharge port, a receptacle neck, a threaded connection between said cap and neck, means whereby contents of the receptacle may be discharged from the cap when in unscrewed position, of a pliable valve carried by the neck, a valve seat carried by said cap in alinement with the valve, whereby when the cap is screwed to closed position, the valve will be bent to form a leakproof connection between the neck and cap.
4. The combination with the discharge neck of a receptacle, a cap threaded on said neck and having a discharge port, of a pliable annular valve on the end of said neck and a bevelled valve seat carried by the cap and positioned whereby when the cap is screwed to closed position a positive seating of the valve on the valve seat is insured by the bending of the valve.
5. The combination with a receptacle discharge neck, a cap threaded on said neck, a discharge opening carried by the cap, a valve carried by the neck and cooperating with said opening for closing the same when the cap is in closed position, of a pliable self-seating valve connection between the neck and cap, said connection being formed upon initial screwing of the cap to closed position.
6. In combination, a closure cap and receptacle neck connection, said cap being threaded on the neck, said connection comprising a pliable annular valve V-shaped in cross section and carried by the upper end of the neck and a valve seat in the cap in the path of the annular valve at an angle to the Valve and forming means whereby when the cap is screwed to closed position, the valve will be bent to positively conform to the valve seat.
7 The combination with a closure cap threaded on a receptacle neck and having a discharge port therein, of an annular pliable valve connection between said neck and cap and formed when the cap is screwed to closed position and a second valve connection between the cap and spout and controlling said discharge port in the cap, said valve connections being. positioned and proportioned whereby they will simultaneously seat after the forming of the first mentioned valve connection by the screwing of the cap to closed position.
